Positive LFT (negative pcr) which brand?

So my child used a flowflex (nose swab only) last night x2 and both show a clear positive although they line is not as dark as the control line.
We have been for PCR.
I have cold symptoms (1 week) negative LFT
We also out of curiosity tried an older brand of test - throat and nose- just now- negative.
My child has no symptoms except sneezing at times. They are a contact via school obviously as schools rife with it.

Do we think it could be the new lateral flow tests at fault?

I've done two of the new flowex ones recently. Both were negative.

@WhatMattersMost I've been getting faint positives since last Wednesday . A negative flow flex Saturday. Now back to faint positive again

I'd assume you're positive.

I really hope they get to the bottom of this anomaly!

We’ve just had a letter from my sons school asking people to get another pcr if it comes up negative after a positive lateral flow. Think the pcrs are bit dodgy at the mo.

frenchiemummy92 · 12/10/2021 12:52

@WhatMattersMost it's literally only flowflex showing faint positives. I've sent a postal PCR of again this morning. I've been told the first Negative PCR over rides the LFTs.

Me too I don't know what's right and what's not. I've now got my youngest DD with a temperature but she is testing negative on both LFTs and had a PCR last week that was negative too

I’ve spoken to all the children’s schools today and they have no idea what to do with these children but have several !

Covid helpline say to ignore the LFT if PCR is negative 🤦🏻‍♀️ I feel like death warmed up so I’m not going anywhere but DP is expected in work despite positive LFT

WhatMattersMost · 12/10/2021 17:19

Honestly, I do not trust official advice any more - not since they refused to add the additional (well-known and widely disseminated) symptoms for PCR eligibility. I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but it smacks a little of favouring a blunter approach so that we reach herd immunity faster.

I do tend to trust advice from those at one remove from the official line, and whose expertise is respected, i.e. the JCVI and, in this case a director of public health.

And the Covid helpline is about as useful as a chocolate teapot, given they're reading off a script.

I’m sending the child back to school - tonight’s LFT still clearly positive but what choice is there? We did another pcr which was posted, school have no idea what to do but say if pcr negative they can go back. Given the fact two kids they sit with have tested positive last week it seems foolhardy but !

I think it's foolhardy (LFTs are seldom falsely positive), but I also think at this stage, we have to do what we feel is best and right.

All of these reports are all well and good but until the government makes a statement on it there won’t be the support for people in this situation to isolate.

JanglyBeads · 12/10/2021 19:29

See my recent posts on other threads about this - DfE call for schools to trial LFT alongside PCRs for QA. It’s going to take weeks before we might have an answer.

To clarify my decision to return child to school, I was instructed to return siblings who have negative pcr and told no reason this child can’t attend as pcr trumps lateral flow. Child has GCSEs coming up and coursework so far behind and currently such massive outbreaks in school there are very few of the regular teachers , most are stand in / supply - a PE teacher room french class today and doesn’t speak a work of the language. I’ve kept them home, done lat flow, done pcr, second pcr sent away today and they have no symptoms ….
