Does the NHS App have a data leak

Cecillie · 06/10/2021 17:55

I only installed the nhs app yesterday, basically because I wanted a Covid vacc certificate in order to travel.
Today I have received one of those spam emails, with all my details , offering me a hard copy of my certification.
To me it seems like a massive coincidence? I’m sure there are probably more sophisticated answers but it is a bit worrying if my data isn’t protected by a government app.

I had one of those the other day. Did yours start 'Dear NHS Member'?

Can you confirm the actual senders email address? And when you say "all my details" can you be more specific ?

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 06/10/2021 20:11

Mine was from [email protected]

AllThatFancyPaintsAsFair · 06/10/2021 20:34

I had one of those and I've never had the NHS app, I'm not entirely sure whether it was a scam, are there genuine ones?

bluebirdswhistle · 06/10/2021 20:37

Yes my mum has been saying this for ages, as soon as she did it she started getting lots of spam calls and texts several times a day

Cornettoninja · 06/10/2021 20:37

I’d presume where ever you downloaded the app from (apple store, google) is the most likely source tbh. It doesn’t mean that they’ve got any personal details but I think tech is sophisticated enough to put two and two together with any other data to deduce you might be after proof of vaccine to travel. This stuff is scarily accurate in how they target you and for what.

WhatHaveIFound · 06/10/2021 20:38

I had one of those emails today too. Looked exactly like spam so I deleted it straight away.

I've had the app since I had my vaccinations (March/May) but went on it yesterday to download the Covid Pass to my Apple Wallet for travelling at the weekend.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 06/10/2021 20:55

I had one of those emails yesterday, deleted it as it was clearly a phishing email/spam. I haven't been into my NHS App for ages. I would assume it's someone hoping some people will give their details and payment info because they haven't realised the COVID pass is free.

Madhairday · 06/10/2021 21:09

I had one of those emails today and have never even downloaded the NHS app.

KingsleyShacklebolt · 06/10/2021 21:13

I have these emails all the time - I am in Scotland and we don't even HAVE a NHS app.

Pure coincidence.

Kummerspeck · 06/10/2021 21:49

Maybe no help but I am the other way round. Had the app for ages and have used it for checking in and out of places, scanning is still on although I've never been pinged but I have never had a letter

Dbank · 07/10/2021 08:57

I haven't seen any evidence that there's been a leak from the NHS app, far more likely your data has leaked from one of the many known existing leaks and it's just a coincidence.

You can check whether your email address at:- www.haveibeenpwned.com

Don't be too alarmed if your address is found, but it's certainly a good idea to change any passwords that may be associated with the source of the leak.

WhatMattersMost · 07/10/2021 09:08

It's spam. I'm a seasoned internet user and, embarrassingly, I was taken in, and the data was used to spearphish me. Fortunately, I cottoned on almost immediately and blocked my card.

Angrymum22 · 07/10/2021 09:27

I had a text today with a link. If you look at the address all MHS addresses will end in .gov anything other will be a scam.
If you have the time report it to NHS counter fraud. If they are using the NHS banner to extract money it it defrauding the NHS.
Screen shot anything and include it.
Counter fraud will redirect it to the right police dept thereby accelerating action.

Angrymum22 · 07/10/2021 09:28

NHS not MHS

Cherryana · 07/10/2021 09:34

Yes I got an obvious spam NHS one offering me a hard copy of my Covid pass and it ‘coincidentally’ started the day I went abroad.

The sender is [email protected]
but because of its timing with my trip it almost got me.

Dee1975 · 07/10/2021 21:59

Did you Google anything first? I.e nhs Covid pass.
If so that’s just Google adverts targeting you!

Cherryana · 08/10/2021 09:02

No I don’t think so. But there is a lot to sort out with a trip. So maybe?

Something to do with me going abroad triggered something somewhere. Or it could be just coincidence.

I was said the name of a (obscure, tiny) private school in passing to my friend and my phone was in my bag. Next time I went on FB, an ad for that school came up. That was weird.

The only weird thing about that is that you didn't know it was a thing GrinGrin
