Any schools coming out of the other side of Covid ripping through?

Just interested to hear whether any schools have weathered a Covid infection storm, and emerged with cases now falling and things getting back to normal, and hopefully a sense of relief that the school will be largely immune for the year ahead.

Yes in my DD’s school it has slowed. Virtually no cases last year but lots due to Reading festival etc early in the term - then masks, no assemblies, singing etc reintroduced and definitely slowed again. It is a private school so they do manage it and smaller class sizes. This virus will keep on giving and we will go through this every 6-12 months I reckon. So either we go back to education similar to pre-pandemic or we reorganise the whole of society for which there does not seem to be much appetite in this country. Just crossing fingers that there really are no long term health consequences for majority of kids/teenagers and teachers.

I also have to say that normal bugs are also ripping through massively such as common cold, tummy bugs etc as kids held sterile for a long time period.

Yes - here in Scotland we're a few weeks ahead as schools went back earlier. For the first couple of weeks cases were high, nearly everyone was having to get tested and the school started sending daily emails with the numbers. Now definitely very much on the decline although I expect they might rise again after half term.

Haven't heard anything either way this term. Our school was only sending close contacts home last school year, not whole year groups, DS wasn't sent home as a contact once. I guess it could have already been through the school if most cases were just cold symptoms or asymptomatic.

Massive number of cases at DC school last autumn and in the summer but this term very low. Obviously it might not stay that way.

Ours is but in masks in lessons currently.

Ds said most were back today . Though his best mate and tutor were off . Although no idea what for.

Mine has. We had cases cropping up within the 10 days of contact for the first few weeks. Now 15 days since the last case tested positive. 🤞

Yes my sons primary school pre summer. Each year had lots of cases and it kept going back through the year groups, this was when delta was just kicking off. It eventually slowed down and petered out, but not before surge testing for every family in the school

Barely any in DH’s school but they had loads in July and ended up closing for summer a few days early.

I can’t say for school but Ds friends had it and he’s isolating now.

Not heard a peep from either of my dc schools re covid since they started term, I know through other parents and SM there has been children off with covid though which previously would have resulting in my dc needing to isolate as close contacts. I'm not bothered though, I'm glad schools are more focused on trying to salvage a normal school environment rather than the constant covid updates. We all test twice weekly (bar the youngest dc) failing that there's little much else I can do about covid in schools.

We're at about 1/6 kids off with Covid and various staff. It's awful, rips through 1 year group then another.

We’ve had very cases at all. Some but it’s not remotely ripped through. Small, one form entry primary. Not sure if that makes a difference but our council area has one of the highest rates in the country (as usual) 🙈

A flipping cold/cough virus has ripped through. I was volunteering in reception this morning (I’m a governor & I help with phonics) and 100% of them were snotty, sneezing & coughing 🙃

Yes, in a primary I know of two weeks ago most of year 5s and quite a lot of year 6s and 4s went down. Currently everyone back and recovered and carrying on.

And every time it goes round, it leaves another damaged child in its wake.

Diabetes, heart malfunctions,reduced lung capacity, memory loss, hearing loss, low platelets......

and who knows how long any of these things are going to last?

I don't know how we can be exposing children to this with no idea at all of the long term outcomes - is my breathless year 9 girl going to ever be able to walk up a stair case without taking a rest, ever again in her life? Or will this just last a year or two? And will my year 12 with hearing loss get it back? Is it like the sense of smell loss, it will just gradually return? No one knows any of these things.

No. My secondary is on its knees. About 10 off in every class. No supply teachers, whole departments down. We won't be able to carry on much longer. This needs serious consideration for the forthcoming year 11 exams.

Maybe…? I feel like I’d be tempting fate to say the worst has passed… DD’s large secondary was hit very badly all last (academic) year - they ended up having to close the whole school early as so many teachers and pupils were off with it. Now we have had a handful of cases but they don’t seem to be spreading. I think it also helps that the teachers don’t seem to be coming down in the numbers they were previously (I know a lot of teachers who work there)

Hardly any cases in our big city primary so far. Had a small flurry in summer term but not many others.

Seems to be the case at my DC's school. Over the first few weeks back they were going down like flies, most days there was at least one new case in the class. Now most of them are back and just one new case in the past week. Other year groups are also seeing fewer cases recently. None of the kids were ill, just a bit coldy. Hopefully this will stand them in good stead for the winter.

No it's just going round and round. Takes out half of one class then half of another and another, then back round to the ones that only had a few cases. Not enough staff. Not many supply teachers left.
