Anyone else caught COVID twice?

Miseryl · 05/10/2021 09:16

First got COVID in December 2020, was completely asymptomatic, felt fit and well (was only picked up through testing via work).

Had my jabs in April and June 2021. I've now caught the bastard a second time with all the classic symptoms as well bad head, fatigue, feeling like death warmed up etc.

Blood tests show I did have antibodies after the vaccine (I didn't before). Health wise, nothing else has changed for me.

I know the vaccine doesn't stop transmission, it just seems bizarre that I feel so much worse this time that the first time. Different strains? Who knows.

Anyone else experienced this?

Bump for visibility!

Could your first PCR have been a false positive?

WhatInTheBodenIsThis · 05/10/2021 12:26

I know two people, similar time frames to you also but quite poorly both times with the second being worse.

Hermanfromguesswho · 05/10/2021 12:29

Yes. Exactly same situation to you. I wonder if my first positive was a false one…

Sarah2384 · 05/10/2021 12:29

Yes, I know someone who was very sick (hospitalised and therefore tested and confirmed) back in March 2020 who has just had it again (positive PCR but much milder symptoms).

Treblebass · 05/10/2021 12:36

Your immune system does fluctuate depending on sleep/stress/nutrition etc so perhaps this is what happened this time around.

Miseryl · 06/10/2021 08:02

@Hermanfromguesswho yes I wondered if it was a false positive. I never gained antibodies from it.

@Treblebass that is true. I have been very stressed at the moment but it does seem odd it would make such a difference, particularly as I'm vaccinated.

Me and DP have and both fully vaccinated (the bout after the vaccine was worse for me, ironically!)

But with different strains, it's like asking 'has anyone ever had more than one cold' these days, really.

freshFortunes · 06/10/2021 08:41

Yes. Had it December 2019 although obviously not confirmed but was off work for 3 days, worst cough I've ever had and so ill. It ripped through our school at the time but obviously then it wasn't yet a thing. I had pleurisy for months after. Had vaccines March/May 2021 and currently have it again. To be honest, I just had a bit of a cold for 48 hours, wouldn't have noticed in "normal" times. Partner also has it again, had it same time as me first time and also double vaccinated, he is much more poorly than me but still not too bad mainly just fatigue.

Treblebass · 06/10/2021 08:41

@Miseryl

Don’t underestimate what what stress can do to the immune system. I’m only ever I’ll with colds if I’m stressed.

HoikingUpMyBigGirlPantss · 06/10/2021 08:45

Our NDN have it again at the moment - kids off school - but much milder than the first time round apparently. First time was before 1st lockdown after a holiday in Italy so i suppose this time its a different variant.

idontlikealdi · 06/10/2021 09:37

Yes, august 2021 and August 2021.

Double vaccinated by May 2021. Had a bad cough first time round, no cough just a bit if a cold second time.

Quite a lot of people I know have had it twice

DietCokeChipsAndMayo · 06/10/2021 09:41

Yes!
Had it September 2020, mildly ill for about 3 days, then had both jabs early this year and got it again in August, definitely felt worse than the first time but not worse than the times I’ve had the normal flu

Miseryl · 06/10/2021 14:16

@LindaEllen true! Which is why it seems madness that we have to isolate still. I didn't mind the first time as I felt I was doing my bit for society but this time it just seems like a huge waste of time!

I know someone who had Covid 3 times, was double jabbed, no underlying health problems, not overweight, he died at the weekend because of Covid. Huge shock to everyone. He self isolated as soon as he started with symptoms and protected his house mates. He is a real hero and will be sadly missed.

Covid is a really nasty virus, there's no way of telling how it'll effect anyone, so we all need to keep washing our hands, covering our faces and making space.

olivehater · 06/10/2021 14:28

Caught in the first lockdown. Then caught the
New strain this summer. Also vaccinated. Guess it’s like catching another cold as said above. Guess we have to get used to it. Wonder when we will stop having to isolate for so long and just be off when we are actually sick?

quiteathome · 06/10/2021 14:51

Yes, at the start of lockdown one and after Christmas.

Fully vaxxed now so hopefully safe. (Getting a booster dose soon as I work in healthcare)

ilovebagpuss · 06/10/2021 15:29

I’ve had it 3 times twice 6 months apart pre vaccine and once almost 6 months post vaccine. Work in healthcare so test weekly. Only poorly twice though one was asymptomatic.

TractorAndHeadphones · 06/10/2021 15:31

I caught it just like you - first time asymptomatic. Second time (before second dose) much worse same synptms as you
