Did she put in her bank details/card details?
If so, you should get her card cancelled

OrangeVelour · 02/10/2021 09:58

It definitely doesn't ask for bank details at the end. It asks you to put a code into the NHS app.

Vansale · 02/10/2021 10:03

Then she's going to learn an important lesson isnt she?

The bank needs to be informed she's about to get her account emptied.

ItWorriesMeThisKindofThing · 02/10/2021 10:08

Can you call 119 with her and they can explain?

meadowbleu · 02/10/2021 10:19

Remind her that the NHS do not charge for their services and that includes anything virus related.

Please also report this.

I’m sorry to hear about your mum. But no one is going to post a genuine message on here in case it’s spotted and used by other scammers.

It never asks for bank details, why would it?

Ask your mother, nicely, to apply a bit of critical thinking: most scams don’t stand up to some critical thinking as they rely on you getting swept along in the moment and not questioning something that feels somewhat familiar…

So… ask her, to step back and think it through rationally, without emotional investment if she can?

So, who has a REASON to collect her bank details? The government have no reason. Scammers have a massive reason. Full stop.

But I’m assuming it won’t be a ‘full stop’ for her, as she’s emotionally invested in this being ok, her being right and not being scammed. So:

Why exactly would the government want to accessing private banking details from everyone effected by covid?

Does that sound logical?

It’s a medical tracking service which is a government service. There is no money involved. No one has ever been asked to pay for it, it’s the UK, the NHS yes? Free health service remember?

So what would the government be wanting her bank details for? Do they want the responsibility of storing of this highly confidential identity info they’ve gathered from everyone that they aren’t using?!
Or are they taking money without telling anyone… and if so, what are they using all this money FOR?
And why hasn’t it been publicised that you have to pay for any of this? Considering how much covid is in the newspaper all the time? We can’t move for covid news? So, why the media black out on this? Very unlikely!

(… or of course the scandal that the gov is nicking everyone’s money!)

Or the much more likely scenario that scammers very clearly want private bank details to… get money from her!

Has she actually done it? Do you / her need to contact the bank?

“NHS Test and Trace staff should not:

  • enter your home
  • ask you to provide your name - staff will already have your name and will ask ‘Am I speaking to —–?’ for you to confirm
  • ask for your National Insurance number, telephone number or any other identifying information, other than your passport or driver’s licence
  • photograph your identification document
  • ask for your financial details, such as your bank or credit card information
  • ask you for money …
