My mind is blown. Symptoms too now.
Hard to continue to take seriously. Causes so much disruption and worry.

LF can be positive with certain food/drink recently consumed (eg orange juice)

LFTs are only if you don't have symptoms. Wonder if it is picking up other coronaviruses like the common cold?

dementedpixie · 29/09/2021 16:55

LFTs are very specific to covid so not likely to be picking up other infections. Depends how good a sample you took and whether viral load was large enough.

If you have symptoms now then maybe take another PCR just in case the first was too early

damnthisvirusandmarriage · 29/09/2021 17:06

She’s eaten nothing before the LFT.
The PCR was done well down her throat.

I’m definitely not testing again this time as can’t keep disrupting work and school.

Was the PCR long before the lateral flow? I tested negative on a PCR and then 3 days later positive on lateral flow (and then on a subsequent PCR).

damnthisvirusandmarriage · 29/09/2021 18:41

Lateral flow was before the PCR. About one hour before to be precise x

There are a couple of other threads about this OP ( or that I'm saying you should know that - started one of them myself not knowing another was running!) there is definitely something odd going on.

Lanique · 29/09/2021 18:45

Sorry that was illegible. I meant NOT that you should know that.

damnthisvirusandmarriage · 29/09/2021 19:47

Yes there is something weird happening. I agree x I’m sure it will come out in the wash…. Or not 🤔

I commented on one of the other threads about this but we had this last week! My son tested positive on 3 LFT and had 2 negative PCRs. He didn’t have symptoms at first but did develop them (he also took the LFT before any food or drink)

Our local test centre manager spoke to us because they had lots of people in the same situation. They were investigating the possibility of dodgy PRC tests. They even told his school that they had an issue with PCR tests

pinkpip100 · 29/09/2021 22:22

This link is interesting - in your circumstances OP the positive LFT is more likely to be correct than the negative PCR. Worryingly this seems to be happening a lot and most people would just go by the PCR result.

I've had 2 positive LFT then 2 negative pcr results, 1 in July and 1 in August. I hadn't eaten or drunk before them as I've heard that can affect them.
It's very odd. I had sore head and throat in August with the positive LFT and even with the negative pcr result test and trace told me to continue to isolate for the 10 days. Then my work (nhs) overruled them and told me to come into work which I did.
I'm really wary of any tests now, don't know what to believe.

@pinkpip100
That's a really excellent link

We're in this situation too.
DP tested clear positive on an LFT on Monday (no symptoms).
Follow-up PCR came back negative yesterday.
He did an LFT each day whilst waiting for PCR result and those were negative. He didn't eat or drink anything before doing the tests.
If the specificity of LFTs is so high what on earth else could cause them to be positive if not Covid? Or if it is Covid why have subsequent tests been negative??
He's gone back to work and the rest of the household behaving normally, but it doesn't feel right!
