Retest? Send back to school?

Ds is 10. Yesterday he woke up with a proper banging headache but no fever or anything else. Kept him off school as the headache was making him noise sensitive and he wasn't eating, dosed him up with paracetamol then ibruprofen and by around 1pm the headache seemed to have calmedand he was happily eating and watching tv. Around 3pm he starts saying he feels dizzy. Took his temperature again and it was 38.9. Booked him for a pcr which he did at 6pm. His temperature completely disappeared by about 7pm. When we did the pcr, we didn't manage his tonsils as he was gagging and wretching the second the swab touched him. We did do both nostrils but even after blowing his nose his sample was a bit snotty.

This morning he has woken up full of beans but kept off school as we were waiting for pcr results. The results came back this morning as negative so plan was to keep an eye for rest of the day and send back tomorrow. But now he's saying his food tastes funny. His apple juice tasted like lemon sherbet apparently and he reckons he couldn't really taste his marmite. He wants to go to school and isn't just saying it to skive.

So now I'm wondering if we should retest as he started with a different symptom? Seems silly when it was only yesterday he did a test. But it is a new symptom that he didn't have at time of testing!

Anyone else had a situation like this?

His test is negative, chances are likely his food tastes funny as he's full of snot.

I would send him back to school.

Do you have a lateral flow test? I know they aren’t really designed for this type of thing but better than nothing.

My daughter was symptomatic but tested positive on LFT so could give you a bit more of an indication of whether the test was accurate.

Congestion could be making his food taste weird though too.

We did a lateral flow before his pcr as a practice. I work in primary school, dh in a hospital and have teens in secondary school so plenty of lfts hanging around the house. He really doesn't want to do another one today and tbf I don't blame him. They're rubbish anyway
