Do you think my child could have covid ( Negative PCR)

Hello, my youngest child ( 5) started with a continuous cough on Saturday, Sunday Morning he was still coughing and he had a temperature so decided to do a home test which came back clear, we decided was best do a PCR anyways, which put both me and partner into isolation due to us only having our 2nd vaccine on Saturday, We was both convince the results are going to be positive due to how poorly our boy was, I rang his school Monday morning letting them know we are currently waiting on results but expected them to be positive. I told them that I legally have to isolate until results come back, so I'm not able to send our daughter into school and I'm not willing to arrange someone else to take and collect her and potentially responsible spreading covid, so they let me keep her off. The test came back negative but he's continued to be poorly and still as a temp. I told the school that I still plan on keeping him off as he's obviously had a bad virus, this morning I woken him so he can come on school run with me to take my daughter to school but he's still really bad and as a temp, I rang the school to let them know that I'm not sending our daughter in as it's not fair on my boy to make him walk to school and back when he's so ill.

Do you think he could still have it even though home test and PCR are negative.

I'm aware that lots of bugs and virus are going around but he's never been this ill, he said to me on Sunday ( mummy I think I'm dying, I cannot walk). 😭

I've always been COVID paranoid, the thought of passing it onto others scare me.

Sounds like it’s one of the many other viruses going around, if the temperature doesn’t break today or he gets worse I would consider seeking medical advice but otherwise just keep him well hydrated and give pain relief as needed.

I'm awaiting a pcr result having had similar symptoms. Convinced it'll be negative. There's SO many other viruses circulating now, which people seem to forget were available prior to covid 19.

HungryHippo11 · 28/09/2021 09:18

Unlikely with a negative test

If he had these symptoms before covid existed, what would you have expected was the cause? Flu, cold, other? Those all still exist.

My son had a cough and temperature on the 13th, pcr test on the 14th which came back negative. Was well again by 16th. Assumed was just a cold/virus. Was tested on 22nd as part of the ONS study which came back positive.
I think sometimes maybe it is too soon with the pcr.

My kids have had hideous viruses in the last couple months. Coughing until sick, huge fevers, vomiting bugs, tonsillitis, HFM. It’s been an onslaught! Never covid. We’ve had multiple PCR’s and no-one else’s has ever come down with covid who has been in close contact with us either..

There is a thread where in the SW several people were getting negative then later positive.

SingingGoldfinch · 28/09/2021 15:43

@HSHorror the other thread you're referring to was about negative PCRs after a positive LFT. In this case the LFT was negative which I think makes all the difference.

Waiting for my 4 year old pcr results, had a cough and temp since sat (although touch wood temp seems to have broken today) I'm not overly convinced it's Covid due to the sheer amount going about right now.

Darceyhemingway · 28/09/2021 16:51

My friend did 3 PCRS before getting a positive. Her LFTS were positive so the covid helpline said to ignore them abs go about her day but she felt so ill she did a couple more PCRs and finally it showed up

Senso21 · 28/09/2021 17:26

There’s awful viruses going round at then moment - they are all hitting the kids worse because of last winters lockdown. Hope your son is feeling better soon
