Why are some people refusing the booster?

I had mine today and I told a couple of people at work (nhs) and they both said they arent having it but didnt really say why. They happily had the first two. Turns out alot of people at work arent having the booster. I personally couldnt wait but now Im wondering if I needed it?

Why not ask your colleagues, instead of mumsnet?
They know why they won't be having it.

As for wondering if you needed it, again I am wondering why you ask here?
It isn't as much essential, as advisory. You have taken the advice given, others haven't and won't.

FWIW, I can't wait for mine either, what others do is up to them.

happytoday73 · 27/09/2021 16:40

Can I have theirs please.... I'm just too young..

BeyondMyWits · 27/09/2021 16:42

My husband doesn't want one, after having 4 days of debilitating side effects from each jab (losing 6 days work) he's a bit wary.

TimeForLunch · 27/09/2021 16:42

I won't be having the booster unless it is necessary for travel. That said, i am not (quite) of the age that will be offered it currently.

TimeForLunch · 27/09/2021 16:43

To be clear, the reason I had the first ones was to make travel easier. I am not worried about Covid for me personally.

Marguerite2000 · 27/09/2021 16:50

Perhaps they don't feel they need it, especially if they've already had covid in addition to being doubly vaxxed.
I'm going to accept mine, as a 61 year old carer, but I don't think I would bother if I was young.

TreaslakeandBack · 27/09/2021 16:53

I’m having mine on Friday but I was unsure whether to delay it as had Covid in May as well as double jabbed in Jan/ March.
In the end I decided the more protection the better!

ShakespearesSisters · 27/09/2021 16:56

Apparently we don't count as double jabbed 6 months after our second (news to me until we got told by work) so mine run out a few days ago. I've booked my booster today for Wednesday.

Interested to know how long people think their original two vaccines will last for?

I too dont get if you had it the first time around, why not carry on having it?
Or did people only get it the first time because either others did, or the government were pushing for it?

The woman who developed the AZ vaccine, Sarah Gilbert, things vaccines are unnecessary for most people as the protection is lasting well. I’ve had Covid and 2 vaccinations. At the moment, I don’t see the need to have any more. When would it stop?
TheGrumpyGoat · 27/09/2021 17:02

Oh and I got the first 2 vaccinations to make it easier to travel abroad to see my family.

EachandEveryone · 27/09/2021 17:02

I have asked they just say they dont see the point, espevially if theyve had Covid as well as the vaccines.

Porfre · 27/09/2021 17:03

Well.
I've had two covid shots.
But also have had covid.
I'm 38 years old. So not sure how a booster will help much, since I've already had actual covid itself

NotMyCat · 27/09/2021 17:03

I'm waiting for my third, and then the booster! 4 vaccines in total

Dreamstate · 27/09/2021 17:04

I won't be having a booster neither are my parents. Most vaccines last for years. Im sorry but no effing way am I taking a booster so soon. Not even been 6 months for me.

Witchesbelazy · 27/09/2021 17:05

If I’m offered which I doubt it at the minute I won’t because my menstrual cycle has been so severely impacted for months and months now. I want one last child so won’t take the risk as it concerns me.

OuiOuiBonjour · 27/09/2021 17:07

Some people are ideologically opposed on the basis that the majority of global citizens still haven't been offered a first vaccine.

Some feel they have already got protection against serious or lifethreatening illness and don't mind catching it, much like they do with a cold or other virus.

Some don't want to go through the side effects again.

Some are sick of "being told what to do" and this one way they can rebel.

Some are waiting a little while longer as have antibodies from both the vaccine and the infection.

I have had a third dose. I was unsure if I would be offered it and was very anxious that I didn't have antibodies (autoimmune disease and neutropenic) and am back teaching in small cramped spaces on a campus with ten thousand students, 20 % of whom are unvaccinated plus staff. Our campus has done away with masks and social distancing. I arranged an antibodies test so I knew what I was dealing with. I was offered a 3rd jab with an hour's notice.

My antibodies test showed almost 2500 units, very high level, especially given that I was vaccinated in January. It arrived a couple of hours after my 3rd vaccine. I think I would have delayed it a few months had I known. I might now need another dose in Feb, as I think the infection rate will still be high whereas if I'd left it another couple of months I think that the case rate will be lower in March or April and I probably wouldn't feel the need to have a fourth dose in the space of a year.

I'd prefer to just have one a year eventually. I do get bad side effects and I am a little worried about the possibility of long term implications even though this is not founded on any evidence or science. Just my own anxiety.

flower11 · 27/09/2021 17:37

Had my 2 jabs then just had covid 3 weeks ago. I think that should be enough immunity. Don't feel I need booster so soon.
Would have it next year, the same as flu vaccine is updated yearly.

WouldBeGood · 27/09/2021 17:41

WHO saying no need for boosters for people who are not vulnerable.

I’m fifty two and got the AZ jag so I’d be allowed out. Not really keen to get another jag of a different kind without a very good reason tbh.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 27/09/2021 17:42

I too dont get if you had it the first time around, why not carry on having it?

There is undeniably an ethical issue with us having round three of jabs, which a decent proportion of the scientific community doesn’t feel is necessary, while a lot of the world has none.

I’m not eligible for a booster, but I’d find it a difficult decision to make on those grounds.

WouldBeGood · 27/09/2021 17:42

I also feel it’s amoral as there are lots of genuinely vulnerable people in the world who need the vaccines, rather than healthy people in rich countries

WouldBeGood · 27/09/2021 17:43

*immoral

Wabola · 27/09/2021 17:46

I don't really feel it necessary after 6 month after reading some of the science, I would be happier to leave it longer, I don't doubt I will need a booster sometime so will probably see what the scientists say, a year may be more appropriate.

NailsNeedDoing · 27/09/2021 17:53

Not everyone was that keen on being jabbed twice, but did it for all the reasons they knew they should, even if they didn’t personally feel the need.

It just doesn’t sit well that they’ve been telling us it’s completely safe as if we’d be idiots to question it, when they didn’t even know enough about it to know that it barely lasts 5 minutes. Or they did know, and just didn’t make it public knowledge. I expect uptake in the first place would have been lower if people knew they were only going to be protected for a short amount of time unless they signed up for annual boosters.

lljkk · 27/09/2021 18:37

not sure I should answer becuz I don't want grief for it

I'm not afraid of covid

I only got jabs due to vaccine passport

eventually we have to live with lots of circulating SARS-CoV-2.

I find the hysteria tedious.

if I was willing to risk wild infection it feels hypocritical to get jab... but Covid passports. The system wants to coerce me.

The burdens are falling so unfairly on young people (I am an old fart, not young). I feel incensed for them.

I've gone along with it all. I don't challenge ppl who are terrified. I accept I may be wrong. I shrugged & wore masks & step into the road to avoid people. But STILL it's not enough, what I do. I have to keep doing yet more things other people want to be done (but don't make me feel safe at all).

So screw your sodding booster. I don't want it.
