Daily negative lft test would you do a pcr?

If a group of new fresher flatmates all seemed unwell with sore throat and very occasional cough but been drinking heavily and doing daily negative lateral flow tests would you suggest isolating while awaiting a pcr?

I suggested they should but other parents of group have said that I am over reacting as just freshers flu

No, they are not testable PCR symptoms, you are over-reacting, remember isolating causes harm, the vast majority of even the testable symptoms are not covid, these aren't testable symptoms.

ColettesEarrings · 23/09/2021 14:36

If they're all consistently getting negatives then no, I wouldn't suggest they get pcrs and isolate tbh.

Ok thank you for advice, it was when they started coughing too it made me wary

God life has changed. When I was at Uni concerns would be more likely to be “I went out partying all week with new flat mates. My memories are a bit hazy but I hooked up with a couple of fitties. I took the morning after —jab— pill and I don’t have any symptoms but should I do a chlamydia test just in case.?”

LizzieMacQueen · 23/09/2021 16:32

My son has this at the moment. Tight chest, hoarse and sore throat. His flatmates too to some degree. I've told him to do a lft. No cough but he's very tired.

But yes, changed days from std checks - or pregnancy tests - 😁

dementedpixie · 23/09/2021 16:37

If they have coughs then yes I'd advise PCR tests. LFTs aren't great and may only catch 50% of asymptomatic cases

Mindymomo · 23/09/2021 16:39

My son is in the same situation, not at uni, but out at weekend drinking heavily, in bed for 2 days recovering and now has sore throat, headache and generally feeling awful. He’s like this once a month, but won’t put it down to drinking, so is having a blood test next week as he thinks it may show something. He’s fine when he doesn’t go out drinking though, but of course he knows best.

LFTs are crap, mine were all negative but I did have Covid. It sounds like they've just been overdoing the booze though.

CarolineForbes · 23/09/2021 17:26

My friend has been spreading Covid all last week with similar symptoms. She did daily LFTs instead of getting a PCR. They were all negative until day 9 and PCR has now confirmed :(

Yes, I've heard of other 'freshers' in the same situation!!

@Sweetnessandbite. No, you're not over reacting, they're being irresponsible freshers/parents. AND They'll be the ones kicking off when teaching goes 'online' again!! 🙄🙄

BigSandyBalls2015 · 23/09/2021 17:32

Why are you in contact with all the other parents!

She didn't say she was! But even if she is, how is that relevant to her question???
Jelly0naplate · 23/09/2021 19:26

If they are concerned/unsure there will be a source of information via the uni that they can ask.

The cough depends on if it is an odd cough or a continuous cough that would be identified as a symptom.

It's a week or two into term, Freshers flu is doing the rounds and they've not been exposed to the majority of other people's germs over the last 18 months.

MyPatronusIsAPenguin · 23/09/2021 20:26

My DH and DS both had positive LFTs. Mine was negative. PCR confirmed for both. T&T said I had to have PCR despite 5 negative LFTs (I know I shouldn't have done so many but was panicking Confused).

PCR came back positive today. Did one more LFT as a matter of interest. Still negative. I have a sore throat and am tired but I have a 2 year old, I am always tired Wink

I think it's none of the other parent's business. If any of them have symptoms they are old enough to go online and order a test.
