Is it ok we are just letting our kids get Covid?

DD5 has just tested positive for Covid. There have been several cases in her Year 1 class but school remains the same. Under the old rules the ‘bubble’ would have closed and she would perhaps have stood some chance of not getting it.
Is it ok that we are letting the government pursue a herd immunity policy with a novel virus amongst our kids?
We seem to be the only country doing this?

It is. It's a real shame that people missed the opportunity to vaccinate over the summer.

3asAbird · 26/09/2021 21:56

The numbers kidd infected seems crazy high to me.
Vaccinations in some areas won't Happen until mid November .

They don’t just seem crazy high. They are crazy high. The highest rates in 5-9 and 10-14 year olds that we have seen since the start of the pandemic. And I don’t think the rates are going to come down any time soon as there is nothing to stop it just carrying on spreading. It’s an absolute mess.

Is it an absolute mess though? Hospitalisations are actually falling right now. Is children catching it and gaining some immunity really that awful? My 2 have both had it, barely even noticed they were ill. The worst of it was a few more days or missed school. I’m well aware that it much more serious for some children and those with more vulnerable family. But I really don’t see it as a disaster. Covid is here to stay. I’d rather most of us just got on with it.
@Nothanksverymuch chicken pox isn’t a novel virus
I can’t believe a lot of the people on here are real.

Why pop on a covid forum if you’re this dismissive of the very really risks for kids.

8 children already died this month, almost 90 in total.

1/7 long covid.

They will get the vaccine eventually.

We are letting it rip in schools to benefit adults and the economy whilst pretending its for their mental health.

What’s it doing to the mental health of vulnerable kids or with vulnerable adults at home?

It can be a nasty virus for kids and we know it attacks the organs of adults.

Can not comprehend why we are allowing it to rip through schools - a crazy, nasty gamble from a crazy, nasty government.

wondersun · 26/09/2021 23:26

@Smartiepants79 where do the vulnerable go while you get on with it???

It really is. A complete mess.
wondersun · 26/09/2021 23:28

@herecomesthsun

Interesting that the HART individuals were actually writing to individual members of the JCVI about vaccinations for under 18s, according to that linked thread (quoting tweets) "to thwart children's jab rollout".
Oh god, don’t get me started on the awful hart people. Have you twitter searched Val Fraser? She seems to have come out with some shocking stuff - and apparently she’s an education adviser!!!

They try and derail and manipulate - she’s probably on here 👋🏻👋🏻👋🏻

Bizawit · 27/09/2021 00:37

@wondersun completely hysterical and misleading post.

The rates in Scotland have now dropped sharply since around the 10th September. I've seen that reflected both from my 2 DD's schools and the one I work in as well. We are 2-3 weeks ahead in going back to school under new relaxed restrictions so I suspect a similar pattern will be seen. We always knew the first few weeks would see an explosion in cases
rookiemere · 27/09/2021 08:07

Yes @liveforsummer I also live in Scotland with a secondary aged DC15 and posted about the decline in cases earlier upthread.

It bears repeating though as it was ignored by most posters as doesn't suit their narrative.

I suspect/hope the English drop will be even quicker than the Scottish one as more DCs will already have had covid previously.

beentoldcomputersaysno · 27/09/2021 08:36

@wondersun completely rational and accurate post in my opinion

theemperorhasnoclothes · 27/09/2021 08:41

@wondersun

great post. The gamble this government is taking with our children's health is also one not repeated by any other nation. Masks in France, vaccination in the US (and masks in many states too). Most countries are trying to mitigate against risk in the classroom.

As a result there WILL be fewer children who die or are disabled and there WILL be fewer families badly affected in those countries compared to the UK.

We're run by rich people whose kids are in private schools with small class sizes and who have private health insurance. Their decisions show they don't care about our kids health. We should be getting angry.

When will people wake up?

That’s good.

We actually have falling cases in London which is something atm but if rising in this age group it will be in the first few weeks as you had then fall.

This was in the Independent www.independent.co.uk/news/health/covid-children-vaccine-school-latest-b1927264.html

marieantoinehairnet · 27/09/2021 10:54

Yes and Zahawi has said today he won't let children down, will keep attendance levels up - how exactly?!

The only way he can go that Now is by making them go in infected!!

He needed my worry, fuel tanks will be empty for teachers and parents soon anyway!

beentoldcomputersaysno · 27/09/2021 11:35

Speak for yourself. I'm fine with DS getting Covid (again).

rookiemere · 27/09/2021 12:55

We have masks in Scottish schools.
It appears to be having sod all difference to infection rates ( which are now dropping after initial surge).

Maybe if surgical masks were required it may have more of an impact who knows. If people genuinely believe that a bunch of teens wearing the same sweaty mask below their noses all day long including bus there and back makes anything but the most marginal difference to infection rates, then do please have a closer look at the Scottish figures since schools went back mid August .

Babamamananarama · 27/09/2021 13:40

Spiralling rates in young children is not inevitable. People in Spain and France are not in lockdown and don't have school closures, they are getting on with having a good quality of life with low covid rates helped by sensible mitigations like wearing masks in enclosed spaces, which everyone accepts as normal.

Those who are perfectly happy to expose their children to covid - does it not worry you that it also looks like it raises the risk of them developing type 1 diabetes?

Is it ok we are just letting our kids get Covid?
Faffinator · 27/09/2021 13:52

@Babamamananarama your chart also shows covid cases rising in school age children in Ireland, Belgium and Germany.

Louisa111 · 27/09/2021 13:55

I think it's stupid that if there's a positive case in the household as long as the children are negative they can go to school. My dh is positive ..we've all had to get tested but if I test positive too and our children are fine kids still have to get to school..they can jog on as I've told grandparents to stay away. I know they had to stop whole classes being sent home as that was silly but theses rules are just reckless and it's gonna spread rapidly through the schools

Moonopoly · 27/09/2021 14:01

Apparently cases are now rising in the 35-50 age group which is hardly surprising seeing that this is probably the age of a good chunk of parents

It's not surprising at all, it's a covid fest in the making
Babamamananarama · 27/09/2021 14:17

@faffinator they show small upturns but their stats don't show alarming exponential growth like ours.
