Denialism

julietmanchester · 18/09/2021 03:09

Im married to a man who pretends covid isn't real. It's becoming too much to put up with him anymore. If I want to discuss higher rates or surge of any kind, he literally tells me to shut up and he won't listen to my 'covid obsession'

Any advice? Move out?

@Anordinarymum

Maybe I could set you up with my husband- you seem to be his type.

Does he actually deny COVID, or does he just not want to hear constantly about the rates and surges?

Nobody in my family denies COVID and we’ve followed all the rules, but we don’t have regular conversations about the rates or anything.

lannistunut · 18/09/2021 03:29

Hi @julietmanchester, it is really hard if you and your partner have a completely different worldview, can see why this is causing problems.

Do you need to discuss it with him at all?

My feeling is that those who deny covid exists are struggling mentally. Denial is different to being less bothered about risks, as clearly covid does exist.

Has he always been rational before? I have a relative who is quite odd about covid, but they are odd about other things too, often rather contrary.

Shelddd · 18/09/2021 03:30

Ya I mean it's been 18+ months of this fear porn. It's a little ridiculous, especially if you're both vaccinated. You need to move on.

lannistunut · 18/09/2021 03:31

'fear porn' Hmm

Good luck with the moving on this winter!

Shelddd · 18/09/2021 03:33

I've been fine so far, haven't had from anything and haven't had so much as a cough in years. But hey glad you wish Ill will on me.

Shelddd · 18/09/2021 03:34

Haven't hid** meaning I've worked, met with people, socialised, etc.

mummaelle · 18/09/2021 03:35

Covid is real, but the media isn't. They exaggerate a hell of a lot so I can understand him getting fed up of you banging on about statistics and stuff 😂

julietmanchester · 18/09/2021 03:35

@Siepie

Complete denial. Literally. It's like it NEVRR happened or it's over. Child's school has many cases and he could care less. I wanted to just get off my chest w few things that is worrying me about kids long covid and he literally told me to shut up.

I think he's insane and I think I should move out

I don't wish ill on you, but you seem not to understand what this winter is going to be like nationally.
julietmanchester · 18/09/2021 03:38

Perhaps it's different worldview but my mum even thinks it's dangerous to live with someone in such denial that she walks on egg shells if she wants to ask me how things are going at dc school in front of husband. She rings me later

If you can't discuss the situation with him as it may affect your own children, then yes, that is a problem.

milkyaqua · 18/09/2021 04:36

I'm really sorry you're experiencing this. Moving out may be something to seriously consider. Glad you've got your mum's support, at least.

I'm surprised he hasn't moved out

felulageller · 18/09/2021 05:03

He shouldn't be verbally abusing you- telling you to shut up. And I'd think this wouldn't be the only time that's ever happened?

So it sounds like your relationship has deteriorated to the point of no return.

People with different world views, whether over covid or other things are entitled to their opinions but are likely to be incompatible.

Shelddd · 18/09/2021 05:53

@lannistunut

What will it be like? Probably similar to before. I am not a covid denier, this is going to stay around like the flu from now on.

Do we discuss the tens of thousands of flu deaths every year? No, yeah just time to get on with it. Get vaccinated, especially if you're over 50 or high risk, and just get on with your life.

LuchiMangsho · 18/09/2021 06:24

Well COVID has killed 1 in 500 Americans. The vast majority of the world is unvaccinated. Nearly a thousand people are dying per day in Florida alone. It has shown up huge global inequities in public health. If I wanted to discuss this someone and they thought it was a conspiracy I would have zero respect for them.

LuchiMangsho · 18/09/2021 06:26

Tens of thousands of flu deaths? When was the last time the UK had that?
See this table. See how many died from flu and how many from pneumonia btw.
www.ons.gov.uk/aboutus/transparencyandgovernance/freedomofinformationfoi/influenzadeathsin20182019and2020

LuchiMangsho · 18/09/2021 06:27

And each year this (plus RSV in children) brings the NHS to its knees.
So let’s add an ‘acceptable’ number of 30K deaths to the 25K from pneumonia and see how much fun the NHS has coping with this.

LuchiMangsho · 18/09/2021 06:31

I mean wanting to discuss healthcare, politics, the state of the world etc is in my book a normal part of relationships. If someone shut it down (not with debate but with denial) then it would be a no go.

UsedUpUsername · 18/09/2021 07:02

Nearly a thousand people are dying per day in Florida alone

Ummm gonna need the stats on that one. Sounds like BS to me

Mybalconyiscracking · 18/09/2021 07:12

“Denial”is a good word, why does it need an “ism”?
