Everyone taking foreign holidays in October half term is surely a recipe for disaster?

Can't see why the newspapers are pushing it and the change in policy about the tests, because to my mind if loads of people travel in October returning without tests for the half term lead up to Christmas, surely there's less chance of a normal Christmas?

@EasterIssland

What a surprise
This is great news for the economy
EasterIssland · 18/09/2021 12:02

@Pootle40 Aw he’s ! And for me that I love traveling :). As said I booked some flights for the half term week this week as I knew prices would go up as soon. As the announcement was done.

EasterIssland · 18/09/2021 12:03

Aw *yes

placemats · 18/09/2021 12:42

@TheWeatherWitch

I thought the reason we all had the vaccine was to allow life to return to normal.
I thought it was to prevent the NHS from collapsing under the strain of treating Covid patients. Now things within the NHS are getting fairly back to normal, people can get, if they're lucky, the treatment they need. Oh and I knew two people who got excellent cancer treatment during the pandemic. However, I knew others who have had to wait for their hip replacements - and they are middle-aged, not elderly.
NannyAndJohn · 18/09/2021 13:48

You’ll be at home anyway not socialising @NannyAndJohn so does it really matter to you whether there is Xmas or not ?

Because I care about other people, @EasterIssland, and hope that they are able to celebrate Christmas as they please.

It's the holidaymakers who don't give two shits about about anyone other than themselves. They certainly don't care that they might bring Covid to a country with a low number of cases.

99victoria · 18/09/2021 13:56

@NannyAndJohn
Do you realise how ridiculous and bigoted you sound making sweeping and generalised statements like
'It's the holidaymakers who don't give two shits about about anyone other than themselves'
How can you possibly know this?

99victoria · 18/09/2021 13:58

And, for all your so-called sentiments about wanting people to be 'able to celebrate christmas as they please', I'm willing to bet you'll be on here around christmas time ranting and accusing people of people selfish because they want to meet up with their families and friends!

MarshaBradyo · 18/09/2021 14:03

At this point I don’t think travel is too much of a problem.

Only a new variant which we can’t predict or do much about in advance.

And as we’ve seen a new variant would need to out run delta in which case it would get in every country regardless. As delta has to the most zero Covid countries.

So you care about people having the Xmas they won’t. Those of us that want to travel and don’t care about Xmas don’t we deserve it as well? Is Xmas over other people’s priorities or feelings. Hadn’t seen my family for nearrly 1.5y. Didn’t celebrate Xmas myself last year. As soon as I could fly to see my family I did. Is those that want to celebrate Xmas with their family more important than me wanting to see my family?

Been twice abroad. Made sure I didn’t bring COVID to the country. Just walked past the city centre where I live. 40k people attending a festival. If they can go , then I wanna travel as I please as well. I’m sure I take more care than the ones going to the festival (I came to town on the bus with face mask even if it wasn’t compulsory)

RosaMoline · 18/09/2021 14:22

Let’s just remember that Nanny said that Christmas will be cancelled because of the government and/or us selfish people…
Much like ‘100,000 cases in July’

GoldFrankensteinAndGrrr · 18/09/2021 14:30

@NannyAndJohn

Well Christmas was already down the pan anyway.

But this is certainly one way to stick the nail into Santa's coffin.

You've been excited for your Zoom Christmas for months, don't worry, your solitary festive plans are safe

The governments of those countries should disallow travel from countries with high rates if they're concerned. Or insist on quarantine/testing.

As far as catching covid is concerned, you're probably far more likely to on a domestic holiday or even getting the bus to the shops, if the infection figures are anything to go by. And they're coming down anyway, which is reassuring, given schools have gone back and life is back to normal (nightclubs, large gatherings/festivals and so on).

MarshaBradyo · 18/09/2021 15:02

Yes, in March-April 2020 children weren't allowed out.

That sounds awful to me.

One 10 day isolation was bad enough for dc. And with negative PCR we went outside anyway.

I haven’t had my invite yet, anyone else?

Nannys Zoom charades are the covid event of the season

@NannyAndJohnI will be travelling to the UK after October 4th to meet my new grandchild for the first time. I won't be doing a pre-departure test because it is no longer required. I will still have to pre-pay for a day 2 PCR test (which may or may not even arrive and may or may not produce a result) Do I get lumped in with all the "people who don't give 2 shits" too?

She can't know it. I actually took a fit to fly pcr before my recent trip, even though it wasn't required.

qwd123 · 18/09/2021 16:28

Yes, it is a disaster waiting to happen.

Thanks in advance Tories for more misery this winter.

Do you say the same about all the festivals, events happening and schools being open in the UK? Because going to any of those is riskier than going abroad right now.

Wasn't it Boris (50k) and Sajid Javid (100k) predicting those sort of numbers over the summer?

And Neil Ferguson I think went higher?

MardyintheBoudoir · 18/09/2021 16:51

Would love to visit family in the EU at half term.

Sparklingbrook · 18/09/2021 16:56

Everyone was busy polishing their crystal balls and guessing the number of cases in July it seems, and now they're doing the same re Christmas.
Have we discounted a Halloween/Bonfire Night/Christmas variant yet to add to that 'disaster' feel?

GreenWheat · 18/09/2021 17:03

But surely as one of those selfish bastards that undertakes international travel, Santa deserves that nail eh Nanny? 😂😂
bumbleymummy · 18/09/2021 17:28

Oh hush, OP. Schools going back without restrictions were supposed to be a recipe for disaster too and cases have continued to fall. Honestly, some people are just not happy unless they’re unhappy.

EasterIssland · 18/09/2021 17:43

“Wasn't it Boris (50k) and Sajid Javid (100k) predicting those sort of numbers over the summer?

@herecomesthsun. They must have followed the nanny’s maths. She predicted 100k and 2k hospitals a day by 21st June. And by 19th of July. And by 1st of august.

In the meantime she was in the good news thread telling us how ignorants we were because we were happy when there were happy news. So I hope the government are using good mathematics

What a very bizarre image.

I'm glad I'm not John, having to live with such grimness.
