Smell question

goingslightlyinsane · 15/09/2021 23:00

I have got sore throat/head ache/sinus pain/lethargic for two days.
Done 4 LTF all negative.
Went for a PCR this eve just to rule out.

Tonight I have got worse. Joints ache, and could not taste dinner properly.
I was hoping it was just a bad cold, so before bed covered my back and chest in Vic's vapourub. I literally cannot smell a thing. How much could you smell? Never had anything like this before.

I don't even know what I'm asking- I will find out soon enough. Anyone else?
Please be nice- I honestly feel like shit.

I couldn’t smell or taste anything either, like someone had just switched off the senses. It’s unnerving so I can empathise you with you. Rest and drink water like it’s going out of fashion is my best advice.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 16/09/2021 06:57

My smell and taste vanished completely. Couldn't smell even the strongest of things like garlic, pepper, vinegar. Took a good 3 weeks for it to come back and even now a month on things taste different than they used to.

TheOnlyLivingBoyInNewCross · 16/09/2021 07:01

I had Covid last December, and my sense of smell is only just sorting itself out. Some things still smell differently, like coffee, for example. Sense of taste came back more quickly but again, many tastes are now slightly altered. I don't know whether it will ever return to what it was before.

It does sound as if your PCR will be positive: hope you start to feel better soon.

Veuvelily · 16/09/2021 07:01

Couldn’t taste or shell anything. Slowly coming back after 3 weeks

Tinpotspectator · 16/09/2021 08:38

Sorry to say that the covid 19 app by imperial says that lack of smell is a really reliable sign of covid. Get well soon.

thirstyformore · 16/09/2021 08:46

You're symptoms sound just like mine when I had covid. Completely lost my sense of smell for about a week. I'd put money on your pcr coming back positive

ScatteredMama82 · 16/09/2021 08:48

I totally lost my smell and taste, it’s the weirdest thing. I’m getting them back gradually just 2 weeks later though.

Nuffaluff · 16/09/2021 08:53

I still have it now. Started last Friday. Still feeling very wobbly and tired but have a bit more energy.
I lost smell and taste almost completely. Could just distinguish salt and heat (chilli).
I am just starting to get my taste back now. It’s so lovely. I just had some blueberries and i could taste them, albeit not very well.
My smell is still completely gone, but I expect it will come back very soon.
I found it helpful to eat salty food like pretzels. It was nice to just be able to taste something!

Lockdownbaby2021 · 16/09/2021 09:16

I teste positive for covid last Friday. Lost smell on Monday night. Can’t smell or taste a thing apart from a burning sensation right at the back of my nose. It’s so strange, my nose isn’t blocked at all but I can’t smell a darn thing. I miss smelling my 7mo so much Sad

Pcr back negative ConfusedConfusedConfused

I was going to say before Covid we did have colds that made you lose your sense of smell.
I think the difference with Covid is that smell and taste completely vanish, it’s a very odd feeling. As Nuffaluff says you can still tell if something is salty or sweet but there is just no taste.

Hope you feel better soon, OP.

Flowerfairy2020 · 16/09/2021 15:31

I’ve had cold symptoms since Monday, started with a sore throat and then a stuffy nose on Wed. Woke up this morning with no sense of smell/taste and a slight temp. Did a pcr on Tuesday as I’d been a close contact, which was negative. Went for another pcr today, due to new symptoms. I’ll post when I get my result. Can’t taste toothpaste but sense the cooling effect of the menthol. Sprayed really heavy perfume and nothing.

Kaley3043 · 16/09/2021 15:42

Has your results come back? I always lose my sense of taste and smell with any virus so it's not just covid that affects your smell and I get sinus problems with affect my smell too. Last year I had a throat infection and couldn't taste anything and smell was weak and was covid negative. A bad cold always means I can't smell of taste for a week or two either from being bunged up. I haven't actually had covid so can't say what it's like to lose it with corona!

Lockdownbaby2021 · 16/09/2021 15:56

Yes loss of taste/smell with covid seems different to a cold. With a cold if you usually have a good sniff then you can get a slight taste but covid it’s just a burning sensation to me with no blocked nose or anything. Very strange feeling x

ParadiseLaundry · 16/09/2021 16:03

As WitchBaby says there are other viruses which make you loose your taste and smell. I had one about 10 years ago and my taste and smell didn't return for months so I was really nervous when I got Covid and I lost them again.

It is weird as it does sound like Covid but it must just be a coincidence. I hope you feel better soon.

Sweetpeasaremadeforbees · 16/09/2021 16:21

That's interesting. I could taste the salt in scrambled eggs today but couldn't taste garlic or veg last night.

Whatever it is I hope you feel better soon OP.

PurplePumpkinDream · 16/09/2021 18:18

When my DP said he couldn’t smell as well as a dry cough, I knew even before testing it was Covid. And it was.

My pcr result has come back negative.

I have now lost smell and taste since yesterday, felt horrendous since Monday, struggling with breathing, cold blocking nose, permanently got mucous in mouth, rash, allergies playing up. Self-isolating atm. Only been in contact with DH and DD. DH has been very ill for 2 weeks, sleeping about 20 hours a day, lost taste, vomitted about 6 times, cold, sinus pain etc but negative PCR done at home. DD is taking PCR today but has had 3 negative LFTs, DH was ill 11 days before us both. DD has got 2 friends she shared a drink with who have tested positive.
