They are an easy measure that are no real hardship and could help (even if just in a small way) suppress this virus surely we should just bring back our mask mandate now?

No thank you.

MLMbotsno · 15/09/2021 11:23

I agree about the discarded masks, they are everywhere.

MatildaIThink · 15/09/2021 11:27

I am not an anti-masker, I still wear one in the supermarket, but you have to take reality into account. Yes the masks had an impact on transmission, but the reality is outside of some very specific circumstances (cramped, unventilated spaces) they have a negligible benefit anyway, even less so with the way most people use them (reusable masks or people reusing surgical masks, cloth masks, handling them between uses, not fitting perfectly etc.). In perfect conditions (such as those under which surgeons use them) a surgical mask reduces transmission of Covid by around 20%, however in real world usage for the general public that falls to

Whammyyammy · 15/09/2021 11:29

Sellers like these on ebay must be praying for masks to be reintroduced.

Surely just bring the mask mandate back now?
thecatsthecats · 15/09/2021 11:29

@NothingIsWrong

Ask anyone who lip reads or needs facial expressions to decipher social cues how much of a hardship they are.

I didn't realise until masks became a thing how much I need to see people's faces or I lose the unspoken bits of conversations. It's been difficult.

Same. I've always been a bit hard of hearing at a non clinical level. I thought I was rubbish at lip reading, but I think I must have been.
Elphame · 15/09/2021 11:31

As I have TN I only went into the supermarket. Everything else I bought online.

If the masks do come back I will definitely be invoking my mask exemption. I won't wear one again as they trigger an attack and there is so little evidence that the masks make much difference especially when worn on the chin or exposing the nose like so many people wear them.

TheNatureOfTheCatastrophe · 15/09/2021 11:34

I think if you're going to bring back a mask mandate then it should be for FFP2s backed up by a push to have them sold in bulk at moderate cost like the surgical masks (and possibly reused on a rotating basis which I think they do in Germany?). Requiring single use mask costing two quid for a trip to the shops isn't acceptable obviously.

I'm hearing impaired and wear glasses, so I do find masks genuinely inconvenient, but if numbers spike up in October and it's a choice between shutting non-essential shops, cinemas and theatres or keeping them open with effective FFP3 mask mandates then I'd settle for the masks.

Antinerak · 15/09/2021 11:36

They should bring it back and 'exemptions' should only be for those who genuinely have severe breathing problems. I don't know of any other countries that allowed people to not wear masks because they have anxiety or any other fake excuses.

SweetBabyCheeses99 · 15/09/2021 11:37

If people want to wear PPE (proper N95 masks etc) to protect themselves then they should. However, the idea that these peoples masks won’t work unless other people wear one too is completely illogical.

Thatsplentyjack · 15/09/2021 11:41

@ADreadedSunnyDay

No point. Kids in Scotland wear masks all day. Covid rates still one of highest in Scotland. All a bit pointless IMO. Social Distancing probably more helpful
Absolutely agree. Cases in my kids school are higher than ever. Not sure why people still seem to think the masks are making a big difference Confused. I can't wait until we don't have time wear them if I'm honest. Half the people here aren't wearing them or are STILL wearing them wrong anyway, which I don't think really matters as I don't believe they make a difference anyway, but if I have to wear one properly, so should you. Not until you fancy having a puff on your electronic pipe in the shopping mall or until you meet a friend you can't hear, or you want to drink your coffee as you go round the shops, and them they just get tucked under your chin.
Everanewbie · 15/09/2021 11:47

I really dislike how COVID has brought on this authoritarian streak in so many people, especially the government. I hate wearing a mask, and would much rather take my chances with COVID than be forced to be uncomfortable, especially after taking 2, and probably soon to be 3 very effective vaccines.

Besides, I have yet to see anything conclusive showing that they make any significant difference. The burden of proof is with those who want to change things.

My feeling is that masks are a very visual reminder that there is something different going on, a psychological tool rather than a truly effective measure.

Please get your vaccines, and stay at home if you've got it, all the rest of the stuff is theatre and I aint doing it anymore.

Agreed. Some now think it's their job to police others, well newsflash it is not.

Againstmachine · 15/09/2021 11:54

Nope don't bring them back, if you want to wear one, wear one. Stop dictating what others should do.

bluetongue · 15/09/2021 11:56

@KeepScrapingBy

I really hope they don't bring the mask mandate back. I find them really uncomfortable to the extent that I've avoided places that require masks as much as possible. Food shopping has been a quick dash round the shop. I've loved the feeling of freedom now they they are no longer compulsory, being able to browse, not having to rush. If they were reintroduced I'd be tempted to wear an exemption badge. Just can't stand the things.
Masks are mandated where I live at the moment. We have no known cases in my Australian state. It’s madness.

I hate them and only wear one where I have no choice or where it actually makes sense (pharmacy, GP etc).

On top of this they are an environmental disaster.

Chloemol · 15/09/2021 12:20

I agree

HallowedKitchen · 15/09/2021 12:26

@Auntienumber8

In the very liberal society that the UK is it seems really hard to enforce anything at all, this isn’t just about covid. It seems people love rule breaking. It’s all very much about the individual until people want state help, it’s a strange mix.

In all this I have been mighty annoyed with people who liken the UK to really oppressive regimes. My grandparents fled an actual oppressive regime where millions eventually died directly and indirectly due to crazy policies.

Totally agree with you. My parents fled an oppressive regime in the 60's and the people in the UK today who make out that compulsory mask wearing is somehow akin to the removal of their human rights are pathetic.
HallowedKitchen · 15/09/2021 12:29

@ilovesooty

I've recently returned from a country where masks are mandatory in public places. No one seemed to have a problem wearing one in shops or on public transport.

Hostility and resistance seems to be a peculiarly English thing.

Agreed. I live in a country where masks are mandatory indoors and for all school kids. Somehow we survive!!
Baluchistan95 · 15/09/2021 12:37

Won't affect me. I have never worn a mask, taken a test, had a vaccine since this circus started. Guess what, I'm still alive!! If people get off on this sort of thing, then crack on, just don't involve me.

Everanewbie · 15/09/2021 12:39

HallowedKitchen I am glad your parents managed to flee to safety. But I disagree with this. A free society depends on state intervention only when absolute necessity and where encouragement and guidance isn't enough. i.e. we mandate speed limits, ban children from drinking in pubs and restrict the amount of paracetamol than can be bought in one go. These measures are proportionate to the risk of doing nothing. What would not be proportionate would be to ban alcohol entirely, ban cars and make paracetamol prescription only. People will die as a result of not banning these things, but the trust in the state depends on proportionality.

The right of the individual is sacred and should never be infringed upon unless it is proven to be needed and is proportionate. Where this concept is bent, or downright broken, we begin our decent to a country from which your parents fled.

In many peoples view, including mine, many state interventions on COVID have crossed the line of proportionality, especially when evidence is far from conclusive. These include masks, curfews, scotch egg-gate and banning outdoor activity.

And now that a large proportion of the country have received their vaccines, many, including me, do not accept state intervention any longer as it is no longer proportionate. It's not just about 'a mask'.

QueenofKattegat · 15/09/2021 12:43

You’re right, it’s no real hardship to wear a fucking mask

For an awful lot of people it really fucking is.

I will never get over the amount of people clamouring to have their lives ruled and dictated to by the government. Mad idea - if you want to wear a mask then crack on, but enough with expecting laws to force other people to your way of thinking.

Peteycat · 15/09/2021 12:44

@Everanewbie

Great Post.

QueenofKattegat · 15/09/2021 12:45

Well said Everanewbie

The ridiculousness that people have just rolled over and accepted will never leave me. Covid doesn't get ya if you eat a scotch egg eh.

Againstmachine · 15/09/2021 12:54

No we aren't in a dictatorship, but expecting state to introdice laws to make you feel safe is a slippery road.

People forget most dictatorships didn't start over night and often produce a climate of fear and a enemy.

BrilloPaddy · 15/09/2021 12:57

@Everanewbie hurrah. A voice of reason among the hysteria.

LovelyLovelyWarmCoffee · 15/09/2021 12:58

Masks, social distancing and «WFH if you can» should be re-introduced at least until cases are down again.
