Surely just bring the mask mandate back now?

They are an easy measure that are no real hardship and could help (even if just in a small way) suppress this virus surely we should just bring back our mask mandate now?

"Masks aren't necessarily a problem with glasses if the upper part fits well to the nose, which all mine do."

You can't assume that they aren't a problem, just because you say so. Do you have visual impairment or do you wear glasses. Two very very different things.

Peteycat · 16/09/2021 21:47

@herecomesthsun

This seems to be all about you at the moment, your experiences with masks, your wants of theatre going. Well I'm afraid the world isn't just the herecomesthesun show.

Peteycat · 16/09/2021 21:48

"21:19paddyk

Fuck masks, just have the vaccine."

Really unhelpful post.

Againstmachine · 16/09/2021 21:50

*That doesn't logically follow."

The logic isn't the same and you know it , eithier vaccines have worked or they have not.

Wear a mask or don't. It doesn't achieve anything differently.

Sunshinegirl82 · 17/09/2021 06:40

The evidence that was collected before restrictions were removed suggested that retaining masks would deter people from certain activities.

I accept there may be some people who would be more comfortable if everyone wore a mask at the theatre and therefore might decide not to go. However there are also lots of people who wouldn't go to the theatre if masks were imposed. Not everyone who is vulnerable wants to wear a mask.

My DM is mid 70s (vaccinated but high risk due to age) and she's very happily back at the theatre now (mask less) as are most of her friends.

I'd suggest that those who are more cautious are pretty unlikely to go to an indoor theatre at the moment anyway (mask or no mask). Those who are more comfortable with a higher level of risk are less likely to want to wear a mask.

Itsjustricemichael · 17/09/2021 06:47

I'd really like to see theatres (as an example) offering "masked" sessions. I went to the theatre and lots of museums when they first opened but masks were still mandatory because I prefer being masked indoors with multiple people. So it seemed the best time for me. I haven't been again since masks stopped being required.
If I had the option that some of the perfor.ances were mandatory mask ones I would go to those.

lol no, I am not obsessed with theatre going, I am responding as you know to your line of questioning.

The world isn't just what Peteycat fancies doing or not doing. It obeys scientific laws and that is why science is so important in managing the pandemic.

The Plan A and Plan B approach is really clever (I think Mr Johnson had a lot of help there) because it tailors the national response to the situation, which is what we really need to do.

110APiccadilly · 17/09/2021 07:03

It does damage the economy - I believe the government were shown figures on this before deciding to scrap them.

I'm in Wales. So I just don't go to the cinema, concerts, plays, etc, where they're required because I would do those things to have a nice experience and if I wear a mask it's not a nice experience. I suspect I'm one of many invisible (we're not standing outside the cinemas protesting) people who are collectively costing the economy quite a lot.

It also effects people who need to lip read (more than you might think) and young children who need to see facial expressions - my baby daughter has two reactions to me wearing a mask - she either rips it off me or completely ignores me like I'm not there, even when I'm speaking to her.

110APiccadilly · 17/09/2021 07:10

Oh, the other thing I'm not doing, because I just can't take it if I'm wearing a mask, is blood donation. Which, if I'm not the only one, has far more serious implications than not going to the cinema.

Masks aren't law. What's a scientific law anyway?

Peteycat · 17/09/2021 07:15

You also didn't respond to my query regarding glasses?

@herecomesthsun

"scientific laws - I thought you meant laws imposed, but just had my coffee so here's the definition of scientific law:

In general, a scientific law is the description of an observed phenomenon. It doesn't explain why the phenomenon exists or what causes it. The explanation of a phenomenon is called a scientific theory.

Non applicable to your argument.

I think this would be really interesting... unmasked and masked performances. It would be fascinating to see which was more popular and to what extent. My guess (and it's no more than that) is that for every person who preferred to wear a mask throughout another 5 to 10 wouldn't.
Egghead68 · 17/09/2021 07:54

I would support bringing back mandatory mask wearing in workplaces, transport and indoor public spaces.

You haven't explained why?

Hopeisallineed · 17/09/2021 08:18

@Peteycat isn’t it fairy obvious why? Presumably because they think it will help with infection rates.

AlixandraTheGreat · 17/09/2021 08:26

@Warhertisuff

I would think the pure joy of going to the theatre again, plus the ability to support theatre companies and artists, could drive that number up. I know I'd happily wear a mask (perhaps with a little distancing too as theatres can be packed) just for the pleasure of live theatre. It's not happening yet in my area.

Stuffin · 17/09/2021 08:40

Those that want mandatory masks back surely you must realise that businesses must have looked at whether this would generate more revenue for them or not.

Clearly if they are not mandating it then they are happy with everyone making their own choice whether to attend masked, maskless or not.

Because they reduce the transmission of sars-cov2.

Yep. Some can't let go though. Although I'm not sure why, because they are free to wear masks should they wish to.

They can think all the way they want. It's not mandatory, and as discussed already soo many times, thise disgusting, flimsy blue things don't work.

HailAdrian · 17/09/2021 09:51

Fuck that.
