Negative then positive result on same PCR swab

I'm just curious if anything like this has happened to anyone else.

On Friday, eldest daughter was generally unwell - temp, cough, loss of taste and smell. She's got a blocked nose so the loss of taste/smell could have been down to this. I got her to take a lateral flow test, and asked younger daughter to take one too. Oldest daughter's lateral flow is negative, youngest has a weak positive.

I repeated their lateral flows on Saturday morning, eldest's is still negative, youngest has a strong positive result within 2 mins. So they have PCR tests.

PCR results are sent through Sunday morning, I have 2 emails for each giving negative results, also the texts come through giving negative results. I was really surprised at this, given the strength of the youngest child's lateral flow result.

Two hours later I received a text to say youngest child is positive. No email, just one text. Test and Trace haven't been in touch but have contacted my friend who's child tested positive on the same day.

Has anyone else heard of getting 2 different results from the same test? Youngest is isolating, eldest is off school as she's not well enough to be in anyway.

This happened to someone I know. They were sent the positive result a few days later rather than the same day though - almost at the end of the period she should have been isolating for.

I seem to remember at the beginning of the summer a lot of people on MN were reporting similar stories, however it was days between results not the same day.

I think since they are both ill anyway it’s probably best isolating.

Thanks. They're both isolating anyway. I took a PCR test yesterday and repeated the eldest's too. They've both come back negative this morning but I'll keep the eldest in isolation too. She's not well enough to go to school anyway.
