Concerts

Decisions decisions.

Would you go to a concert at an indoor venue, a big arena in Birmingham if that makes any difference in the next month or so?

We have tickets for a concert that was rescheduled from June 2020 and now the date is getting near, not sure we want to be in close proximity to that many people.

Both adults are double jabbed but some minor health issues and 2 teens, 16 yr old has had 1 vaccination and 13 yr old none.

I know the chances of being really ill are lower now the adults are vaccinated but is it worth the risk of being ill/ isolating.

Any thoughts welcome

I'd go, wouldn't bother me at all. I've been to a few big sporting events and am going to the theatre next week. Enjoy things while you can.

User875906 · 10/09/2021 22:38

We are going to one in November at Birmingham NEC or whatever it's called now, I'm quite happy about it but am retired so it doesn't affect work, school etc if I should unfortunately catch it. If you are a bit doubtful and worrying about it you might not enjoy it, as it is rescheduled you should be able to get a refund as it's a change of date.

ConsulTremas · 10/09/2021 22:39

Yes, I’d go without hesitation. It wouldn’t cross my mind not to.

Ready4abreak · 10/09/2021 22:43

Definitely. Have tickets for a gig in November. Rearranged from last year and cannot wait.

Both DH and myself double jabbed. I'm on immunosuppressant drugs but refuse to hide away from life forever. I want to get back out to live music.

My only worry is it being cancelled (again) if cases continue to rise.

Dghgcotcitc · 10/09/2021 22:45

I went to a concert last night and it was amazing! If vaccine immunity dies wane go now! Before it impacts surely!

UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 10/09/2021 22:49

I wouldn’t feel comfortable with that yet, no. Not while my kids are unvaccinated and knowing that even if double jabbed, I could transmit to them. The risk of serious issues from COVID is low for my family, but Long COVID would be a bloody nuisance, and for me a concert just isn’t worth the risk (…I say as an avid music lover and musician!)

Elieza · 10/09/2021 22:54

I wouldn’t go myself quite yet.

The stats in Scotland where I am are now 1 person in every 45 had covid in the last week. Frightening.

DespairingHomeowner · 10/09/2021 22:59

I would not, unfortunately. I used to go to a concert every few weeks pre COVID, really miss it. Indoors, crowd, no social distancing and being there a few hours is just too risky IMO

Badabingbadabum · 10/09/2021 23:01

Yes, we are going to the NEC (Resorts World is it now?) in November. Proof of vaccine/test is required on entry so it seems unlikely to be swimming with infected people. I have two young dc at school, get public transport, had both vaccines and Covid so feel pretty safe. I wear masks on buses and in shops but I am genuinely looking forward to standing with a load of strangers, singing and listening to loud music!

emmathedilemma · 10/09/2021 23:07

Personally no but that’s because masks are still legally required indoors here and I couldn’t enjoy myself while wearing one for that long and I don’t think I’d want to be indoors with that many people close by without one.

Kite22 · 10/09/2021 23:12

Birmingham hospitals are full to breaking point and all planned operations have been cancelled for ages. Numbers are rising. Deaths are rising.
Don't know if you are off to the NEC or the NIA (or whatever the latest names are this year) but when I have been to either, there is a lot of crowding waiting to get in and waiting to get out.
It would have to be a real one off concert for me to want to attend at the moment.

flumposie · 10/09/2021 23:12

Yes. I went to the theatre in London 2 weeks ago. I'm back at work in a school mixing with hundreds of households a day.

Mumblechum0 · 10/09/2021 23:12

I’d go in a heartbeat, have been to a couple of gigs and a comedy club and am happy that life is basically back to normal at long last.

I recently read that 90% of hospitalisations and deaths are in unvaccinated people so I personally am not concerned.

gogohm · 10/09/2021 23:13

I'm going in 10 days time, I'm fine about it

SlipperyLizard · 10/09/2021 23:13

Yes, without hesitation. I’ve been to a couple of festivals and have indoor gigs booked this month & for the rest of the year.

We had covid last year, now double jabbed, I’m ready to get back to enjoying life!

gogohm · 10/09/2021 23:15

@Kite22 I don't live in Birmingham, none of the people I'm going with live in Birmingham - big seated gigs are not a huge risk to the town they are situated in. We have to show double vax on the door

campion · 10/09/2021 23:18

Ha! My son's just sent me a pic of a gig at Heaton Park, Manchester tonight. Loads of people but outside. Also sent me a pic of the tram on the way there - they were packed in like sardines and about 3 people were wearing masks. So I think public transport is the bigger problem.

He's had covid and his 2 jabs so is hoping that was enough protection. But he also needed to get back out there and enjoy life.

Pieceofpurplesky · 10/09/2021 23:20

I would, but then I am a secondary school teacher and teach 5 x classes of 32 a day! They cough, chew and breathe (Wink) all lesson. So I figure that wherever I am it's up to fate!

Kite22 · 10/09/2021 23:22

I'm not concerned about concert goers being a risk to local folk Smile. More the other way round.... well, obviously a lot of the gig goers you / the OP will be mixing with will be local.

Elieza · 10/09/2021 23:27

My double vaxd friend caught it from his double vaxd mate and gave it to his double vaxd gf and unvaxd primary kids.

Being double vaxd is not the great panacea it’s been made out to be. Clearly, or there wouldn’t be so much transmission. Just glad the vaxd people don’t get it quite so bad. Although my pals been in bed over a week….

simbobs · 10/09/2021 23:29

Yes, went to one last night. We did drive, though. Not sure I would have been happy on crowded public transport. Everyone had to show proof of vaccination, not many masks.

herecomesthsun · 10/09/2021 23:36

We'd go to a concert outside (will be going to an outdoor party and a sort of fete outdoors this weekend) but not to a concert indoors.

But it's quite a personal assessment of what you feel comfortable with and how you see your risk, I think. We have some reason to be careful.

Good luck whatever you decide.

LilyPond2 · 10/09/2021 23:47

I wouldn't feel comfortable with that at the moment (-double jabbed, early fifties). However, I am also thinking that the chance of your kids catching Covid at school this coming term is very high. So unless you are planning to isolate from your kids if you realise they have been in close contact with Covid, maybe it makes sense to accept you're highly likely to be exposed to Covid at some point between now and Christmas and that therefore there's not much point in avoiding the concert due to Covid risk.

LilyPond2 · 10/09/2021 23:54

NB I am assuming that the DC are totally up for going to the concert and that it is the adults who have reservations. If everyone in the family is concerned, including the DC, that puts things in a different light.

ShowOfHands · 10/09/2021 23:54

In the last two weeks I've been to the theatre and two gigs (all rescheduled). DH is currently driving us home from a gig. We're double vaxxed, the DC have had Covid and the venues required negative lfts and did a temp check on arrival.

It has been brilliant. Three more gigs planned this year.
