PCR confusion

DD went to Reading Festival and shared a tent with her boyfriend Sat night. Also slept at his house on Tuesday.
They both have fluey symptoms now.
Both doing lateral flow tests. Both negative until yesterday when he tested positive.
She went for PCR yesterday (nearly 24 hours ago, getting frustrated waiting for results!) and he went for PCR this morning.
I've already ordered a postal PCR for me in case she's positive, but if she's negative do we just go back to LFT testing? If she caught it the same time as him (Sat) then PCR is likely to be accurate but if she caught it from him Tues should she test again in a few days?

If she gets a cough or temp I'd do another one

FairyAtTheBottomOfTheGarden · 03/09/2021 22:27

She's got a cough and sore throat which might just be post festival lurgy but also might be covid, especially as others in her group have done positive tests.

Still not got her PCR results, 29 hours and counting... 😒

I bet her PCR will come back positive.
If it's not, I'd PCR it again on Monday.

bubblicious3 · 03/09/2021 22:34

My son was at Reading. Came home coughing, headache, exhausted. LFT was negative, took him for PCR on Wed, that was negative. All of his group of 9 are ill, only one has tested positive. Very strange

Shelddd · 03/09/2021 22:36

The odds of it being anything other than Covid when she's symptomatic and had prolonged close contact with her bf who tested positive (and possibly other people)... yaa... just wait a couple days and take another test if it comes back negative but I also feel like itll probably come back positive.

Thanks, that's what I needed to know 🙂

@bubblicious3 they are testing a bit too early.

Really? He was on day 3 of symptoms?

ladygracie · 03/09/2021 22:57

My son was at reading too - negative LFT on Monday, positive on Tuesday & positive PCR on weds. Of his group of 8, they are all ill but only 2 have tested positive.
If he tests positive she will be a close contact and should do another PCR if this one is negative. As Emerald says.

whatswithtodaytoday · 03/09/2021 23:03

I would assume she has Covid tbh, even if she tests negative. If you test too early the viral load won't be high enough, and I know a few people now who've had a negative lateral flow on the same day as a positive PCR, so don't take that as an indication of anything.

She got Covid
HopelesslyOptimistic · 03/09/2021 23:09

I had symptoms, tested 4 times, negative, day 15, 5th test - positive, but knew I had it.

She definitely sounds like she has it .

Lifeispassingby · 04/09/2021 07:41

OP have you had results yet? How is your DD doing? X

Dee1975 · 04/09/2021 09:13

Daily LFT would be recommended and a couple of PCRs over the 10 day period.
Does DD need to SI as she is a contact of a positive case? Or is she double jabbed / under 18?

Thanks for asking, her test was inconclusive so we have to go again today anyway, and being a Saturday the nearest one is 20 miles away 😒 She's definitely not well, I'd be surprised if it's not covid...

She's 17 & has had one jab but she's not going out other than to get another test. She's too poorly to want to anyway, bless her

So her 2nd PCR (done by a professional yesterday) was negative!

She's still snotty and coughing lots so we've ordered another to do at home, especially as she saw her boyfriend Wednesday & he tested positive Thursday 😕

Among my group of friends there are quite a few who had children who went to the broadcasters festival that was widely reported as a super spreader event and several of those who went felt awful when they got back but none tested positive and it's long enough ago now that if it had been covid they would have known

They clearly all had a normal festival lurgy and your daughter may have the same.
