I'm so nervous about DC going back to school

I'm really trying hard not to be but I just feel like it's a ticking time bomb and I'm going to be on high alert for any cough, sneeze or sniffle. I kind of wish they would hurry up and catch it so I can stop thinking about it! Anyone else?

No. She's looking forward to it and I hope she has the best last year in primary. If they have to isolate then we will or have to home learn then we will but I'm not desperate for her to catch it so it's out the way! That's bizarre.

loulouljh · 01/09/2021 21:02

Nope! Seriously not worried in the least. I suspect my kids have had it. Probably more than once. All good.

Pinkpowderpuff · 01/09/2021 21:10

I'm not 'desperate' for them to catch it, completely the opposite in fact, but it seems inevitable that it's going to happen so would rather that was sooner. They are both very much looking forward to going back, it's just me who is feeling nervous. Just me being silly, I'm quite a worrier when they get ill.

OP posts:
CarrieBlue · 01/09/2021 21:11

Very concerned. The government wants us all to catch it. There will be disruption.

Comedycook · 01/09/2021 21:13

They could have already had it and been asymptomatic...you wouldn't have even known! Are they extremely clinically vulnerable? Even the government says that for most it's a mild illness.

Neverrains · 01/09/2021 21:15

Mine are already back, they’re really enjoying it. We’ll deal with any issues that arise if/when they do. In the meantime I’m just glad they’re back with their friends! DD2 is in year 2 so hasn’t had a ‘normal’ year at school yet. Not expecting this one to be anything like normal but hopefully better than the last 2.

Pinkpowderpuff · 01/09/2021 21:23

Pretty sure they haven't had it - I had an antibody test a couple of weeks ago which showed no antibodies to covid infection. If they had had it then I wouldn't have escaped it.

OP posts:
bookworm14 · 01/09/2021 21:31

Not in the least concerned. It’s generally very mild in children. I just want my DD to have a normal school year with no bloody disruption.

Karlee30 · 01/09/2021 21:53

I felt really anxious last year about them going back. Not feeling quite as bad this year as we know the score but undoubtedly nervous as cases are considerably higher here than last term or last year! DC's school we're lucky not to be hugely affected by covid last school year (1 case right at the end!)

Saying that, I do believe my children had it very early 2020 though. Everyone has different opinions on whether it's been around longer than first thought but mine were v poorly. At the time I said it was like something I'd never experienced as a parent. Doctors has no answers for it. They both had the same virus with v similar symptoms - it was bizarre and they were very ill. So many other kids were off with similar plus many teachers. I remember a teacher saying they all had bad chesty coughs they couldn't shake off. I'm rambling now.. sorry but 2 siblings in the school has travelled to Asia with their parents before Christmas too and became poorly themselves.

Anyway, I think time will just tell. I do worry about DS getting ill. He is autistic and getting him to do a covid test he hell. He's had 2 with colds and chesty coughs (both negative). It took us 2 hours to get the test done...

At least tests will be more readily available compared to last September which was a complete shambles.

I do feel there's going to be an increase in cases but hopefully nothing extreme.

Scottishgirl85 · 01/09/2021 22:02

It's not an illness people can only contract once, so I don't get the wanting to get it over with attitude.

RuleWithAWoodenFoot · 01/09/2021 22:03

The narrative has changed, the tone has changed - see various scientists and Sunak last Sunday. We're all going to get it, but they are going to stop testing unless we're ill. So loads of children will be infected and we don't know about it, probably until an adult catches it and gets ill enough to test. All child illness will be excused as a 'sniffle', even though we know that sniffles are a symptom of the Delta variant.

I've just persuaded our school not to do inside full school assemblies for 2 weeks, just so we can try and ride out the end of holidays stuff, but after that I'm going to assume every class has at least one case. I'm planning on staying away from children more than I did last year.

TheLovelinessOfDemons · 01/09/2021 22:08

Some of us are worried because we have CEV relatives for whom even a mild form would be fatal. I really want to see DS 30 again before he dies. I haven't seen him since February 2020.

ZenNudist · 01/09/2021 22:13

No. Its fine. Calm down. Are you not vaccinated? Covid is generally a rough few days at worst. Or even more mild. It barely touches most kids.

Aren't you vaccinated? Even if not that's still not the case though that you'd have definitely got it. I know lots of single people in a household that have been positive with no other family members going on to catch it. We've been back coming up 3 weeks now and I can assure you no one is paying the slightest attention to sniffles or the odd cough. Our attendance has been very high. No need to panic.
Chillychangchoo · 01/09/2021 22:27

It is what it is. Another coronavirus to add to the other coronaviruses. Kids are overwhelmingly likely to be okay.

I’m more worried restrictions will come back into play and kids will need to start class isolations again. They need a more normal academic year not another one full of hysteria and nonsense.

Motherofalittledragon · 01/09/2021 22:27

I'm CEV and my children are all at different schools, I'm not looking forward to it at all, in fact I'm bloody dreading it.

VaccineSticker · 01/09/2021 22:30

From today’s new- Re children and long covid:

“The research suggests somewhere between 2% and 14% still had symptoms caused by Covid 15 weeks later.”

Yeah right no need to worry. This is from the latest research about long covid in kids, yet the headlines say that there’s no need to worry. 🤣

OP has every right to worry now all the mitigations aka covid fire doors at school are gone.
Of course we want kids back at school learning, but at least make it safe. Why needs a full school assembly in the hall for example?

Starrynight468 · 01/09/2021 22:37

Im worried. I've only had my first vaccine due to being so bloody busy at work and I know I havent had covid yet as I've done a couple of the anti body tests you can get from .gov if you're in social care.

My husband is cv and refuses the vaccine as he watches too many tiktok videos.

My dc usually see my dnan weekly and won't be able to when they're back to school as although dnan is double vaxed she's 88, has copd, smokes 30 fags a day and had horrible breast cancer a few years ago, which she has thankfully recovered from but is still very thin and frail. I'm very worried about her catching it from my brother who is a teacher and lives with her.

I'm also worried about my dc as their dad has sickle cell trait. Argh I feel that not having to stay home for home contacts is the worst idea ever tbh. I'm very very worried.

Did you have the test for antibodies from natural infection? Or for the antibodies to the vaccine? They are different tests and give different results.

My showed zero antibodies to natural infection from covid (therefore I haven't had covid in the last 6 months)

but I have had a good antibody response from my vaccination.

They don't particularly 'want' us to, they just realise it's inevitable.
Whammyyammy · 01/09/2021 23:40

MN: children can't catch or spread covid, no problem.
RL: Scotland, back to school 3 week's and coivid cases quadrupled....

Waxonwaxoff0 · 02/09/2021 06:27

DS has just had it, nothing more than a mild cold.

I do think it's inevitable that most people will catch it, we can't run away from a virus forever so no point stressing.

Neverrains · 02/09/2021 06:56

Our school will be keeping bubbles/staggered pick ups and drop offs, masks on school run for parents, masks for teachers, no assemblies, no parents inside the school building etc. Schools are free to add their own mitigations.

My daughters school is still not doing assembly's in the hall these will still be via zoom. Only two year groups will be allowed to play in section of the playground. The school has 4 different playgrounds so works quite well. Not all schools are having away with some COVID safe things a
