I'm so nervous about DC going back to school

I'm really trying hard not to be but I just feel like it's a ticking time bomb and I'm going to be on high alert for any cough, sneeze or sniffle. I kind of wish they would hurry up and catch it so I can stop thinking about it! Anyone else?

@CarrieBlue

Very concerned. The government wants us all to catch it. There will be disruption.
No they don't. It is just inevitable we will catch a very contagious airborne virus at some point unless we stay in our homes forever.
HelloMissus · 02/09/2021 07:42

I’ve had three of my own D.C. go through school and hundreds of foster children.
I’m approaching this term as I have done all my parenting life - they will catch something soon enough Wink

bumblingbovine49 · 02/09/2021 07:51

Slightly worried but DS is going to 6th form college not school. He had Covid in March this year ( mildly ill.for 3-4 days)r and has just 2 weeks ago had his first vaccine so I am hoping he is reasonably protected for a few months . As hopefully are DH and I who were both double vaccinated in May . I am in my late 50s though and extremely overweight so I do.worry a bit but not massively

illuyankas · 02/09/2021 08:03

@VaccineSticker I've read the same article and thought the same. 2% is one in 50, sure nothing to worry about. Hmm

woodfort · 02/09/2021 08:11

I’m not particularly worried now bubbles are gone.

Last year I was living in fear every day we’d get a call. Reading about how some children were isolating numerous times in the year, which was only two terms anyway, we were very lucky.

GintyMcGinty · 02/09/2021 08:16

Mine have been back at school for 3 weeks without any issues.

BitterTits · 02/09/2021 08:17

@unsure111

No. She's looking forward to it and I hope she has the best last year in primary. If they have to isolate then we will or have to home learn then we will but I'm not desperate for her to catch it so it's out the way! That's bizarre.
Could you have posted anything less empathetic?
SpnBaby1967 · 02/09/2021 08:27

I'm delighted they are getting their proper school experiences again. My DD started yr7 last year and spent the whole year in one class doing endless maths, English and science lessons. She is a creative soul and was so excited to get in the art studios when she toured them.

My DS10 developed such anxiety at school which spilled out into his daily life. He was constantly worried, it's not fair to have had so much weight put on such young shoulders. We've worked hard with him over summer to get him back on track.

actiongirl1978 · 02/09/2021 08:42

I'm not worried, mainly as both my DC have had it/have it now. DS is missing the start of secondary school.

However I wasnt worried anyway. Annoyed that life would be disrupted again yes, not worried about the illness.

HermioneWeasley · 02/09/2021 08:57

It is very mild in children, the disruption to their education and the impact of multiple lockdowns and self isolations is much more of a concern

Firstworddinosaur · 02/09/2021 09:00

Does the school have to tell us if there is a positive case in the class now? I'd like to know so we can avoid seeing CEV family members for a few weeks after.

unsure111 · 02/09/2021 09:19

@BitterTits she asked a question and I answered. Im just taking each day as it comes there's no point in myself worrying, people would never leave the house if they did. And it was a bit bizarre saying She wishes they would just get it so it's over and done with. I wouldn't wish COVID on anyone never mind hoping a child getting it so their parents can stop worrying!

idontlikealdi · 02/09/2021 09:25

@Pinkpowderpuff

Pretty sure they haven't had it - I had an antibody test a couple of weeks ago which showed no antibodies to covid infection. If they had had it then I wouldn't have escaped it.
You could have escaped it. DH, DT1 and me all had it, DT2 didn't.
ALaDameLaisseTaPlace · 02/09/2021 10:09

Cev and severely immunosuppressed here, fucking terrified but also pleased for them that they will be back with friends and getting on with life

Popitdontstopit · 02/09/2021 10:20

There are elements that seem insane to me. Not isolating whole classes? Fair enough. Not isolating people who live with positive cases? Crazy. So your dc can be sitting in class beside asymptomatic Johnny whose parents are both positive and Julie in the next row has two sisters all positive and none of them even need to do a PCR test before coming into school...
Whoever said the government thought it was inevitable children catch it - well yes, with these rules it will be!

The reverse of this will be a nightmare for working parents (mothers, probably) - primary school dc test positive, mother not entitled to isolate and receive ssp as they did what they were told and had 2 vaccines, they can't go to work as nobody will be willing to babysit the children with covid! 10 days unpaid leave potentially.

Good, the sooner the better!
Popitdontstopit · 02/09/2021 13:37

So mybalconyiscracking you're happy for cev children and the percentage who will develop long Covid to get it? Not just accepting that they might, but happy for them to?

PrincessNutNuts · 02/09/2021 18:25

We've all just had covid

But I am expecting our children's education to be disrupted by the government's policy of giving covid outbreaks plenty of time to bed in and infect as many people as possible.

How can that not result in closed schools?

10% of staff and students is hundreds of people in some schools.

I think you'd only know if they were in close contact. Track and trace are taking over rather than schools doing the contact tracing.
kimlo · 02/09/2021 18:41

for my children, no. Dd1 has had it and has had one jab. Dd2 has just had it. Both caught it at school with mitigations in place.

For other people, yes.

For me, yes. I'm double jabbed but I have an operation coming up. I need not to catch it from work before that, I need the nhs to have enough space for me to have the operation. Then theres my own person worry of getting flu and covid at the same time. As someone with pretty bad asthma flu is a bad idea at the best of times.

The antibody test is not conclusive. The immune system has t-cells and other ways of fighting infection that would not show up with an antibody test.

In Scotland, yes they do tell you.
neveradullmoment99 · 02/09/2021 19:01

Haven't had one for primary yet, just high school. [Im in Scotland]

Newgirls · 02/09/2021 19:07

We’ve just tested the whole secondary school so anyone with it isn’t coming in. And then twice weekly tests for all so we are in a much better position than in the past. Far more handwashing and gel everywhere - school has never been so hygienic!
