Seeking medical help for something else while isolating

Shit. My 2 year old has a stinking cold, chesty cough, runny nose, high temperature. I don't think it is COVID, we have all had it already and it appears more like a cold than anything. Still, better to be safe than sorry, so I took him for a PCR test this morning.

Since getting home, he has been screaming in pain every time he does a wee in his nappy. The end of his penis doesn't really look sore but he won't let me have a proper look as he appears to be in too much pain.

I called the GP and they won't see him as 1) there's no appointments and 2) he needs to self isolate until his results come back.

What are my options here? I've been in a queue to 111 for the last 25 mins but no answer yet. I'm not sure if they will suggest a walk in centre but you're not supposed to go if showing any symptoms.

We had this with one of ours. Waiting for Covid test results but needed urgent antibiotics. 111 made an appointment with hospital GP service and they were seen there that afternoon.

If I was that concerned I'd go to A&E and explain. They won't leave a 2yo screaming in pain and will prevent test you through a 'red' pathway.

I would go to children’s hospital a&e and tell them on arrival so you can’t wait in your own room.

My GP saw me on Friday gave to face even though they suggested a had a pcr test for symptoms but they saw me first!

Probably treat, not prevent test. Pfft.

Poor little chap. Make sure you are seen today. I expect he's just got a cold but regardless a 2 year old can't be left in pain! Go surgeries are a shambles, keep trying with 111. Hope he's better soon! On another note, my son had a little soreness in that area recently. I found warm baths helped a lot 💕

Thanks all. Still on hold to 111, just called GP again on a different phone. They've just said to see what 111 say and if they refer me back to the GP then they will have to "sort something out" 🤷🏻‍♀️

A&E. ridiculous that a GP would leave a toddler screaming in pain.

Shibees · 26/08/2021 13:46

Sounds like he could possibly have a UTI (although I’m not a medical professional). I would get him checked in A&E if he is in that much pain. Young children can be seriously ill with UTI’s.

The hospital will be well equipped & have a system for patients with suspected Covid.

Hi all, finally got through to 111 who called a walk-in centre who was willing to see him. He's got both a throat infection and UTI, and we got antibiotics after waiting 2 hours for him to do a wee 🙈

I had to take his water sample to the GPs though, so they could send it off and tell me in 3 days time whether he needs to carry on with the medication, but when I got there, they refused to take it as their collection is at 9.30am 🙄 They want me to go back in the morning with a fresh sample, but my argument is that the new urine will have had the benefit of 3 doses of strong antibiotics so might not show the whole picture? The pharmacist agrees with me so has advised me to take both today's sample and a fresh one and ask for them both to be tested. What a bloody palaver 🤷🏻‍♀️

My GP's surgery are a waste of time overall to be honest.

I'm so glad someone saw him. I didn't post earlier but was really angry at the way the GP dealt with it. Hope he feels better really soon
