AIBU Negative PCR but Positive LFTs

Hi Mumsnet!

To make this as simple as I can: my DD tested positive (with symptoms) on Friday 6/8 plunging us all into isolation. I had no Symptoms to begin with so was taking daily lateral flow tests all negative.

Mine and DS symptoms started on Tuesday 10/8, I did a PCR on Wednesday and it came back void, his came back positive.

I did another PCR on Saturday (only one I could find at drive through) and it came back a few hours later as negative, I even did some lateral after and they were negative too.

I extended my self isolation until 20/8 for my own peace of mind, I did another LFT on Tuesday and Today and theyre POSITIVE.

I've spoken to NHS 119 and they've said as long as I dont have a temperature or runny nose I'm free to go when DS isolation ends tomorrow but then why the sudden positive LFTs? AIBU to tell work I wont be in from the weekend even though they do expect me in?

I'm guessing my PCR was a false negative but I'm unsure why the LFTs are positive now! If I redo a PCR I'm sure they'll say the same as I'm free to stop self isolating tomorrow as its based on first day of symptoms right? I'm just scared I am still very contagious and thats why the LFT's are positive now :(

Might have been a true negative then and you’ve since caught it! I’d do another PCR x

If I did another PCR surely my isolation period would still be from the same day of my symptoms ie last Wednesday? :(

I would get another PCR done just to find out.

Slightly different to you as I had symptoms, but I got a negative PCR initially (my DS was much more sick at this point he got positive PCR). Next day I felt worse so did a LF in the eve abs it was positive. I then did another PCR and it was positive. T&T have advised my isolation starts on day of first symptoms not day of first positive PCR, phew. False positive LF are rare but do exist so I'd do another PCR if I was you.

Sorry realised just re-read your post. Yes I'd agree isolation ends for you 10 days after false symptoms. So given that I'd not bother with additional PCR now. I think you can get positive LF at the end when not still infectious so I wouldn't worry. Once my isolation was confirmed with PCR and I got call from T&T they advised ending isolation based on symptoms (said same thing as to you - must not have fever or runny nose in order for isolation to end) not tests

You can still have symptoms at the end of isolation with a positive test. As long as it's not temperature you're free to go out. I still had cough/fatigue for a while after my isolation ended but no temperature so was no longer deemed infectious
