@sashagabadon

every country watches every other. It's not personal. We've watched China, Italy, Ireland, US, India etc Poor old Sweden was watched and commented on by the whole world at one point. UK gets this too - see "freedom day" negative world commentary - from NZ and Australia media too just as much as anywhere else. We're all obviously more interested here on Mumsnet than other boards as it is the Coronavirus board afterall so it probably feels more intense - but I also have friends that have paid little to no attention to covid happenings in the world for months!
Sweden are following our approach with schools...that will bode well.
beentoldcomputersaysno · 18/08/2021 16:18

It must be an amazing position to be vaccinating from a point of no covid. I should imagine that NZ will not actively set out to infect as many of the unvaxed as possible, like we are doing, nor minimise the impact of that.

samsalmon · 18/08/2021 16:42

It was me who used the word fascinating, not @RedToothBrush
I’m just interested, that’s all and I don’t lack compassion. I do a job that requires bags of it, every single day. This is the coronavirus board, so I’m on here because I’m interested in developments.
Hope that’s clear. Also, I raised a bunch of points in my original post, none of which you’re remotely interested in talking about so I’m going on to move on.

I actually think you can be interested and not lacking in compassion. Mainly cos its human nature to be curious. Even of the worst thing. If you aren't interested, how do you prevent the worst?

But there you go.

RedToothBrush · 18/08/2021 17:04

Its a damn sight better than apathy and indifference at least.

Bryonyshcmyony · 18/08/2021 17:21

I think it's interesting too.

Dancingonmoonlight · 18/08/2021 19:23

I posted while in bad form.
I’m very concerned the vaccines aren’t working tbh. Cases are increasing daily here even though 80% of the population are vaccinated. We’ve now moved to over 12s. It’s a sinking feeling. The future feels bleak after very long and strict lockdowns.

Where are you Dancing?
Planesandflying · 18/08/2021 19:37

Dancingonmoonlight

Yes whereabouts are you? UK vaccines are holding really well, deaths have remained pretty much constant for a month now since the Big Release. I find that so encouraging, plus we have so much natural immunity given how many of us here have had it. Take heart.

Vaccines absolutely are working but they cannot eliminate all spread so there will still be lots of cases until we reach a sort of equilibrium. We are on our way but it will be a bit bumpy for a while.
MapleMay11 · 18/08/2021 19:48

@Dancingonmoonlight Don't lose heart - we're only just learning now how long immunity lasts and it looks like a booster may be needed at least in some populations after 6-8 months, based on the data from Israel. They have bravely gone first and we should thank them for that.

PicsInRed · 18/08/2021 20:35

Much like the flu, the elderly and vulnerable will need annual boosters. As the plan is to give flu & covid jabs together (or even combined), all staff and resource is already structurally available. As with flu, the rest of us can get shots if we want and/or at no charge through work, school, private GP etc.

That's not bad news, it's brilliant news. We're nearly out of this shit.

amicissimma · 18/08/2021 21:10

@shiningcuckoo

I don't think it's possible to watch how things are unfolding in NZ and Oz and come to any real conclusions from the other side of the world. You only have the media to inform you and from what I've seen the UK media is wildly inaccurate about the situation in NZ. Even if you have family here, views are so polarized and based on political leanings, you're unlikely to learn anything enlightening other than what Auntie Mabel thinks of Jacinda and Judith.
Having become used to the daily update on the UK government dashboard, I'm finding it frustratingly difficult to find similar updates on the situation in Australia and NZ.

Can anyone link to a website that gives daily figures there please?

I have friends and family who are keeping in touch, but as PP says, it's hard to get an objective idea of what's going on across the whole of each country.

Kingstonmumof1 · 18/08/2021 21:13

Guardian's Australia page has a tracker right at the bottom similar to the UK page.

NZ back into lockdown.
Kingstonmumof1 · 18/08/2021 21:14

Sorry that is for @amicissimma

fiveminustwocats · 18/08/2021 21:19

To me this whole debate has a strong colonial vibe, where 'Mother England' and some of her inhabitants are fast to criticize snd undermine the strategies and actions of a former colony on the basis that we can't possibly know what we're doing or be trying a different yet valid strategy.

I have been reading through this thread this morning, and was about to post and say something similar. It astounds me that people in the UK seem to think they are in some lofty position where they can criticise this part of the world and tell us what we should do. To be honest, the average New Zealander couldn't care less about your opinions, they don't care if you know people here, or have family here - YOU are not here, and it has nothing to do with you.

You live in a country many thousands of miles away, you have a different way of life, your country (I say "country" as I believe most of you are in England) holds little relevance to most of us and yet you feel that you - who are only a month out of your own very long restrictions - know what is best for us. We are not a mini UK, we are not clones of you, we are completely different, and we will cope with this in our way - not yours.

PropertyFlipper · 18/08/2021 21:20

There has been abundance of smugness from NZ the whole time. It’s a parochial type of attitude - ‘we’re alright Jack’ - and, despite having a sibling there, you couldn’t pay me to live there either.

Good on you.

Don’t you have NZ centric chat forums?

You’ll hear views from U.K. as many post from here. Don’t like it don’t read.

I do realise we will hear views from the UK, but like many MN posters you don't seem capable of understanding a post longer than two or three words. I never said I don't want to hear them, just the condescending "we know better than you" ones.

I just love these posts - no-one is going to pay you to live here, we don't want you to live here, get over yourself!

Porcupineintherough · 18/08/2021 21:40

Is it weird that I cant think of a single country that would pay me to live there? You'd have to be pretty special for a nation to want to acquire you and most if us - aren't.

Yep it was the typical droning on but enough to get what kind of insults you do - as you show above.

I couldn’t care less if the opinions on here don’t mean anything to you either.

People are posting to chat about NZ. So what

Just skip if it’s not what you want to read.

This is a UK site, so it's going to be dominated by non Kiwi and expat sentiments. What else would one expect?

Don’t you have NZ centric chat forums?

Yes, "TradeMe".

It's a discussion on an anonymous message board, I don't think anyone is under the impression that people in New Zealand are arsed about their opinions, are they? Confused

I think it's been handled amazingly there, but I really hope they contain this outbreak as this is giving 7 days to flatten the curve vibes.

Why post on a predominantly UK forum then? If we want to dicuss NZ then we can. People are allowed to discuss anything on here.
