What, no more clapping hands for shitty comments?

Bryonyshcmyony · 18/08/2021 09:02

Would it have killed you to say the UK has been amazing at developing and rolling out the vaccine?

Kiwiinparis · 18/08/2021 09:03

Honestly what’s the point? You lot don’t understand why we are in lockdown, we do.

I have better things to do than spend the rest of the night coming up with come backs for people who will just look for any reason to attack something that doesn’t concern them.
Like enjoy our lockdown evening on the farm, go for a walk and visit our new baby lambs!

Wakeupin2022 · 18/08/2021 09:04

Proper lockdown.

That old chestnut!

Please can you tell me what is a proper lockdown compared to a lockdown.

Is it the Proper bit that is the most important?

Kiwiinparis · 18/08/2021 09:04

Didn’t I just type that? Maybe try read again

MarshaBradyo · 18/08/2021 09:04

Fine

Can it with the we leaned in bollocks

And we’ll all be happier.

Well, Sydney’s in ‘lockdown’ (visiting friends and going to Bunnings), and they’ve just had a record number of case again today.
FiveShelties · 18/08/2021 09:06

@AngryWhompingWillow

How bizarre. Lockdown with only 1 case. Confused

Personally, I am torn between feeling sorry for them, because lockdowns are tough and shitty, and feeling like laughing and pointing my finger (a la Nelson Muntz from the Simpsons...) Because they were so smug about being covid free last year when we were all suffering massively over here, and the prime minister was acting like she was King of the World because HER country was covid free!

Not so smug now eh? Wink

Smug - why would Kiwis be smug about other countries having thousands of cases and deaths?

Most of us have very close family in the UK - my Mum is in the UK, why on earth would I want to see cases there?

Bryonyshcmyony · 18/08/2021 09:06

You lot don’t understand why we are in lockdown, we do

You are seriously telling posters from the UK that they don't understand lockdowns? Mate.

Wakeupin2022 · 18/08/2021 09:08

Yes - andwhyhave we had a normal life since May 2020….?

Because you've been stopping it at your borders! Not much required from you yourself!

PS am I hoi polloi? I think I like that reference. Makes me sound posher than I actually am. Although maybes not as I didn't swan about and did what was needed......

LimeRedBanana · 18/08/2021 09:08

Lots of people clearly don’t seem to understand why we went into (proper Wink) lockdown for just one case…
Kiwiinparis · 18/08/2021 09:09

@FiveShelties 100%. My family are from Scotland and England. I don’t feel smug looking at their death rates thinking it might be someone I love soon.

MarshaBradyo · 18/08/2021 09:11

The whole idea that NZ did is harder / better at lockdown and leant in really has to go.

Look at the border policy and cases you are dealing with.

Wakeupin2022 · 18/08/2021 09:12

Is that because of the rules or is that because people don't agree with it. Lockdowns worked in the UK. But they worked because the population supported them and despite what many foreigners think there was extremely high compliance. They waited until the last minute (sometimes after) to go into lockdown so the public wanted it. I don't think any future lockdown in the UK would be as successful as people are thoroughly fed up with them.

FiveShelties · 18/08/2021 09:14
@MarshaBradyo

We are not locked in. It's that others are locked out. We can leave, we just have to quarantine on return.
Wee are locked in though, it is impossible to get a slot in MIQ and you cannot return without that. I have been trying to get a slot for six months so I can return to UK to see my Mum. There are no slots available.

The person who began the ‘leant in’ phraseology a page or two back was a Brit (God Save the Queen?).

“Would it have killed you to say the UK has been amazing at developing and rolling out the vaccine?“

There is definitely glee on this thread about what some posters perceive as impending doom for NZ. It’s a bit disturbing really. And the above comment just smacks of insecurity. We’re a tiny isolated country at the bottom of the world, we have zero impact on you - why do you care so much?

MarshaBradyo · 18/08/2021 09:18

LimeRed is a Brit?

RedToothBrush · 18/08/2021 09:18

@whatswithtodaytoday

I find it so strange that people are so angry about the NZ response. Personally I would absolutely bloody love to be there, compared to the shitshow the UK has had to endure.

It seems very obvious that they're just getting everyone possible vaccinated - and if they only got the big shipment in July it makes sense that's not done yet - and then of course they will open up.

Im not angry at all.

It would be nice to see one country demonstrate in practice how to deal with a pandemic because it provides a good model for the future for all to follow.

For that to work countries need to learn lessons from each other.

It fascinates me. But it also seems that even the best responders have made errors and that is concerning. So far NZ has been hailed but thats only as good as the latest data unfortunately. If it is the case that NZ is unable to get this under control that has implications way beyond its borders. Not necessarily for covid. How do you plan effectively for the next one etc etc.

As it goes i have numerous friends and family in NZ and I'm watching with concern because everyone else i know anywhere else in the world is now vaccinated. Certainly if NZ can't keep Delta out then it could impact on quarantine policies elsewhere full stop.

Im also wondering where things go from here internationally. Looking at the UK going into September and what happens next. The latest data from Scotland isn't promising at all.

This is the thing, working out what to do does mean we should be looking at the successes (and failures) of other countries. NZ has put a magnifying glass on its self for doing well to this point.

I think there are actually Brits on this thread (like me) who are wishing NZ on to continue to do well. Because if they have a problem at this point it kind of shatters some hope for the future that better prepareness can protect us rather than just delay the inevitable. It sort of highlights that all governments are inept at learning for the mistakes of others. I don't want that to happen because its a thoroughly depressing thought...

FourTeaFallOut · 18/08/2021 09:18

I did not, go back and read my post, see how I say that I'm not about to start singing God save the Queen, FFS. It's a goddamned joke

God, I don't feel gleeful!

For NZ to face a huge rise in cases would just underline how uncontrollable the Delta variant is. I mainly feel shuddery about the evangelical description of "proper lockdown", because I think lots of us in the UK felt that at first

You said:

“…to suggest that we haven't leaned in to the effort and helped is bullshit.”

I picked up on it, because from the outside, your use of ‘we’ seems a little off. By ‘we’ you mean researchers and healthcare professionals.

FourTeaFallOut · 18/08/2021 09:22

And fwiw, my DH is a kiwi and I'm one of those rare mnetters who actually likes their pil. I have my fingers crossed that the cases are a blip and the lockdown is effective. At the same time, I refute the fact that the UK have done fuck all to help.

Well said Kiwiinparis, I hope you had a lovely evening. I've enjoyed day one of lockdown very much, going for a walk in the sun and sitting in the sun reading this afternoon. Much nicer than reading all these ridiculous posts by people who seem far too involved in something which really has nothing to do with them.
