@LimeRedBanana good luck!! I had mine back in April!

Bryonyshcmyony · 18/08/2021 08:44

But we’re not going anywhere, so how does our slow vaccine roll out affect you / the world?

Doesn't it worry you that you have the Delta variant AND low vaccination rates? It would worry me. But to be fair to NZ you haven't seen anything like as bad as us! So I guess it's easy to be less bothered.

Terhou · 18/08/2021 08:45
@MarshaBradyo we aren’t “locked in”. We can leave the country. We can holiday (without needing to quarantine) in some Pacific Islands and until recently we had a bubble with Australia.

Like most Kiwis I have close family abroad. But I’m in no hurry to go there and I certainly don’t feel trapped.
Friend of mine was unable to go to the funeral of her mother in the UK recently. She could perfectly easily have travelled to the UK, but the earliest she could get a quarantine placement was February, and even that was uncertain as apparently they get booked up within a few minutes of being made available. My friend couldn't do that because she couldn't afford to take several months of work.

It does appear that questions need to be asked, at the very least, about why there are not many more quarantine placements. I'd have thought that economically NZ is way better off than most and could well afford it.

Kiwiinparis · 18/08/2021 08:45

@Bryonyshcmyony it is worrying us, which is why we are all staying at home

Not really, because - bam - we’re in lockdown.

Proper lockdown.

And the vaccine roll out has picked right up.

FourTeaFallOut · 18/08/2021 08:46

We produced a vaccine that can be stored in regular fridges, we donated a billion dollars to the covax project, we have a gazillion vaccine and medical volunteers, the latter gave the green light to the cheap and easily available dexamethasone, we have the enormous genomic testing capacity which we have shared globally and more.

I'm not about to start sing God Save the Queen here, we got things wrong but to suggest that we haven't leaned in to the effort and helped is bullshit.

SummeHoliday · 18/08/2021 08:46

@Bitofachinwag

What kind of lockdown is this lockdown?
Hard lockdown. Almost everything is shut. Masks outside the home (stay in your household by bubble). Exercise from home only - and no exercise that may result in the emergency services being involved, so no sea swimming or hiking, fir example.Schools shut. All community facilities including playgrounds shut. Supermarkets and pharmacies open, that's about it. Took the rubbish out this morning & TBH it was lovely y to hear birds instead of cars...
Bryonyshcmyony · 18/08/2021 08:47

Good luck with it all!

A cold inward shudder... I remember people saying that here

MarshaBradyo · 18/08/2021 08:48

Ha me too re birds

Definitely no fatigue there yet ;

Kiwiinparis · 18/08/2021 08:49

I guess NZ doesn’t mind it so much because we haven’t been in lockdown for such a long time that for a lot of people it can seem like a respite from daily commuting/the hustle and bustle

The tiny percentage of the population that is researchers and healthcare professionals have done all the hard yards, while the hoi polloi have swanned around without a care in the world.

In NZ, the population has leant in.

Kiwiinparis · 18/08/2021 08:50

@LimeRedBanana 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Bryonyshcmyony · 18/08/2021 08:51

Well if they haven't got lots of people coming in and out and the vax rollout picks up they'll probably be fine.

I was interested in pps saying NZ was thinking that perhaps they just don't need tourism to the extend they did as I naively thought that was one of NZs biggest contributors to the economy?

MarshaBradyo · 18/08/2021 08:51

This is utterly crackers.

You don’t have lockdown fatigue because you’ve had normal life, as you say.

You are very unaware to say this.

Yes, it's quite sweet really.

Yes - and why have we had a normal life since May 2020….?
Turangawaewae · 18/08/2021 08:53

The first case identified had travelled out of Auckland to a tourist area, the Coromandel. It's highly likely they will have come into contact with travellers from all over NZ. That's why the whole country is locked down.

Kiwis returning don't pay for MIQ, only those coming for short times. But getting a space can take months and is a source of frustration for those stuck overseas.

Most of us are not expecting a 7 day lockdown. We need some time to see how big the outbreak is. Current modelling, which was stunningly accurate first time around, suggests we will end up with 50-120 cases.
I am expecting a lockdown at least as long as the incubation period of 14 days to catch every case that was freely mixing with the community.

Thanks to the earlier poster who said they had booked their vaccine today. I went online and am booked for mid Sept! Easy as.

MarshaBradyo · 18/08/2021 08:55

Ha at this. Nothing to do with your location. No you leant in.

I get why you’re ok with lockdowns still but this self applause is something else.

Bryonyshcmyony · 18/08/2021 08:57

Yes and dismissal of the vaccine development! It's a bit tin eared, but as I say it will be interesting to see how things play out.

Everything to do with our lockdown, clearly.

Do you think if we hadn’t locked down, COVID wouldn’t have swept through?

We locked down. All of us. Properly.

FourTeaFallOut · 18/08/2021 08:57

If I only took a few researchers it's a wonder that NZ couldn't have done something more productive than willing up the drawbridge. Surely you have a few researchers?

Except that is ridiculous, isn't it, when you think about it? Because it just doesn't work like that.

sashagabadon · 18/08/2021 08:58

I get it's annoying when other countries comment on your strategy. It's what happens particularly if you hold up your strategy as world leading as JA has regularly done publicly, even now. The rest of the world are then more interested in watching it play out. It's inevitable people will comment.
The UK has to put up with this stuff all the time though so I have sympathy. Everyone comments on us in the UK.

NZ and Australia comments on the UK all the time. Scott Morrison for example spent much of January criticizing our vaccine strategy , saying we rushed authorization, it wasn't a race, we are reckless extending the dose gap etc. Then realized it was actually a race and extending dose gap was a great idea and followed suit. Jacinda has done the same.
If they had both been politically wiser and more astute strategically they'd have said nothing at all except, well we'll wait and see, the UK has leading scientists and so it might just be a good idea we'll want to follow.
I read an article in RNZ, a news zealand website, just before the 19th July, suggesting the UK government should be sued for our "freedom day". That sort of stuff is hyperbolic and ridiculous and so in comparison to that a fairly mild and correct criticism of vaccine roll outs in both NZ and Aus are pretty fair comment.

MarshaBradyo · 18/08/2021 08:59

We’ve had repeated stay at home orders over long periods of time. Two terms homeschool. In the first lockdown the proof we did it and complied well is in the numbers. They fell from far higher than NZ to very low.

It’s this we do it properly stuff that makes people scoff. Nuts.

Kiwiinparis · 18/08/2021 09:00

Ok enough. Covid 19 isn’t meant to divide everyone and make them argue. I’ve gotten sucked into that and to what end honestly??

It’s not a competition. NZ have been amazing at keeping covid out, other countries have been great at vaccine roll outs.

Bitterness be gone!
