Missing smelling my babies head and the taste of food soo much
I'm sure it will differ a lot but what's the average tend to be. I cannot taste or smell a single thing

My taste came back about 10 days after testing positive but I still have no sense of smell, it’s been just over 2 weeks. I’m hoping it’ll be back soon 🤞

Labralion · 16/08/2021 04:41

Mines maybe took about 4-6 weeks. I also missed smelling the kids heads and the dogs paws! Cola has never tasted the same again though! It's been 8 months!

mrssunshinexxx · 16/08/2021 11:06

Urgh I'm
On day 11 and absolutely nothing

I don't think there is a clear average. I joined an online group of people who had lost smell and taste and there was huge variation, from a few days to over a year. Mine went completely for 7 months and then gradually started to return.

mrssunshinexxx · 16/08/2021 12:24

Oh wow @GreatSoprendo

Ds said it took months for his taste and sence of smell to come back

TheHuntingOfTheSarky · 16/08/2021 12:56

I tested positive on 1 January and my sense of smell is still messed up. Can't bear the smell of coffee, garlic and many more foods any more. They make me really nauseous though I still taste the "proper" taste when I eat them.

freelions · 16/08/2021 12:58

DH had covid Xmas 2020

He still can't smell or taste anything Sad

mrssunshinexxx · 16/08/2021 14:44

Omg noooo @freelions

Hopefully you won't be so unlucky @mrssunshinexxx

It has totally changed DH's attitude to food sadly and he now eats for necessity rather than pleasure. He has lost about 1.5 stone in weight and BMI is currently about 20 so he looks very scrawny but claims that he feels ok

Fl0w3ry · 16/08/2021 15:18

Started slowly coming back after 10 days from absolutely no taste. Although for months after things didn't quite taste the same. But I was just pleased when it started to come back.

Generalpost · 16/08/2021 15:25

Oh I just spoke to ds properly. Its been over a year since he had covid. And his smell/taste is still not as it used to be before covid

MadeForThis · 16/08/2021 15:27

Only lost Smell but it returned after 2 weeks. Feeling very lucky now. It felt so strange without it. Lots of sympathy for anyone still effected xx

madamecake · 16/08/2021 15:36

I’m nearing the end of my isolation after a postive test and haven’t been able to smell or taste since Thursday, so only a few days.

Feel so sorry for anyone who has this symptom, I find it very depressing. Really hoping it comes back soon though as I need to be able to taste as part of my job!

mrssunshinexxx · 16/08/2021 17:11

Can understand that @freelions it's only been 10 days for me but cooking and eating now is a total chore and I do it because I have a child that needs to eat well

OP posts:
Tumbleweed101 · 16/08/2021 17:18

It was about 10 days for my children (teens).

Kitcat122 · 16/08/2021 18:55

Taste came back at about 7 days but was dodgy for a while. Lots of things kept tasting rancid. Smell took 9 months to fully return.

lorisparkle · 16/08/2021 19:10

My colleague had COVID at the beginning of December and still can not smell very much. I did read an article about some researchers looking at whether 'smell therapy' which involves re- teaching the brain to smell is effective.

SpanishFly · 17/08/2021 21:38

This is a depressing thread. My smell vanished on Thursday morning. I could taste almost nothing. I can currently taste things like orange squash, although it's much weaker tasting than usual. I can also distinguish sweet and savoury but that's about all.
I still can't smell a thing, which is a bit freaky. I'm starting to get used to it all, but praying it all returns soon.
I wanted to go out for dinner this weekend, but it's utterly pointless, and I can't imagine feeling like this for long 😔

CirqueDeMorgue · 18/08/2021 14:45

I tested only because of a loss of smell/taste and I'm finding it so unsettling! I'm trying to see the silver lining though which is that I won't be eating for enjoyment therefore I'll lose some weight? I also think we'll hear about the worst cases online as with covid in general but hopefully the 'norm' is a few weeks at most for it to return.

eandz13 · 18/08/2021 14:55

One of my friends has just got his taste back today (16 days after his positive test). A few of my other friends who've had it a while ago said it took around a week or two. I don't know anyone that's said theirs hasn't returned, although my aunt said hers took a few months before everything stopped tasting of actual poo. She was quite moderately ill (rather than mild, I mean) so maybe there's a link.
I'm on day 8 of tasting/smelling nothing at all. I'm shocked how depressing it is. I keep violently sniffing at the mouthwash hoping for a trace of mint!!

Mum32021 · 19/08/2021 11:30

Ive been doing this with fabric softener lol

eandz13 · 19/08/2021 11:48

I'm on day 9 today and everything is starting to have a hint of ashtray, hoping it means it's going to come back soon! My coffee tastes mildly like I'm drinking really diluted ashtray water and it's still better than nothing!! Anyone else's changed/improved?

Chillychangchoo · 19/08/2021 12:25

It took 1-2 weeks for my taste to return.

SpanishFly · 21/08/2021 00:05

For anyone who's reading this thread needing some answers, I lost my smell and most of my taste last Thursday. I had zero smell, and only could taste some mild hints of some things. The following Wednesday I had a strange smell inside my nose, like stale, weird bacteria kind of thing. I had a couple of very faint hints of smell, but they went away again. The following day (ie one week to the day of losing smell) smells and taste came back.
We had taken multivitamin tablets since the day symptoms started, and we took a daily zinc supplement as soon as the taste vanished, as we had read a few things potentially linking zinc deficiency to everything. My husband was exactly the same - lost smell and taste the same day as I did, and it returned a week to the day.
