Lft question

geddyw · 15/08/2021 14:15

Dh is self isolating with dss who tested positive 10 days ago. Last day today.

Dh has done a pcr which was negative.

He's done 3 of the new LFT (the nostril only ones) and a really faint positive line has come up after the testing time window has ended.

Are these like evap lines you get on pregnancy tests? Or do we need another pcr test doing?

Typically we are on the last day and have no idea where we stand!

Thanks x

I would do another PCR if I were you.

girlmom21 · 15/08/2021 14:16

Do another PCR

nordica · 15/08/2021 14:17

You should only read the results at the exact time stated (15 or 30 minutes depending on the test) and nothing after that counts.

How far afterwards are the lines appearing?

HappilyHadesBound · 15/08/2021 14:19

None of those we've done have ever changed- the positive stayed positive and the negatives have all stayed negative.

I think you should do a pcr x

geddyw · 15/08/2021 14:26

@nordica anything from an hour to a few hours.

I moved out and have isolated at my mums with my dc is one is vulnerable.

All of our lfts have been negative and stayed negative too.

My guess is he is positive. Will do a pcr.

Just wondered if it was a common thing to happen..

Bloody covid! X

When did he do the 1st PCR?

Lineeyesoverhere · 15/08/2021 14:51

I had this with my 4 yo. Dh is positive, we’re on day 6. The rest of us did PCR tests and all came back negative. DCs have colds. I tested DS on Friday and after 30mins a negative LFT. Forgot to bin it and the next morning a faint line. So PCR yesterday and a negative result… not sure what to think.

So confusing isn't it. At least you've had a negative pcr.

Love to you and your family. Hope your Dh isn't too poorly x

I'm a fully trained NHS Lateral Flow Tester/Processor

If after the time is up as in dead on the development time has finished and it's showing a negative then the result is negative. Even if after, say another ten mins has passed and you see a faint positive line. The test was still negative. If in doubt order a PCR

Lineeyesoverhere · 15/08/2021 15:49

@geddyw so confusing! I was convinced it would be a positive but we all seemed to have dodged it so far. DH isn’t too bad- aches, tired and felt it in his lunges on Friday/Saturday but much better today. Although I’m slightly envious of him lying in bed with Netflix and the door closed from the whining and carnage that is happening elsewhere in the house! 🤯

@MonkeyJam

Thank you- that reassured me.

Why do some tests go pink in the display window? That was what my DS’s was like and then showed the ‘false’ positive. After the 30mins…

AustinPowerful · 15/08/2021 16:06

I've done absolutely loads of lft tests and so have the kids (schools)

I'm lazy so look after 30 mins to check result- always been negative- then leave them lying around 🤣

Only once have I ever seen a line, it was about 2 hours after I took the test. Did another lft and pcr and both were negative.

So you may get a negative pcr?

I'm a fully trained NHS Lateral Flow Tester/Processor

I feel like we can all add this job title to our CV

Lineeyesoverhere · 15/08/2021 16:35

@AustinPowerful were you symptom free at the time?

PipPippin · 15/08/2021 16:37

@MonkeyJam so glad you are on this thread! My DH has had several clearly positive lateral flows this week (the old style which are nasal and throat), been for 3 PCR's (yes 3!) and they are all negative. He is still testing positive on the lateral flows...he did a 'new style' nose only lateral flow today and that was negative, but old style still positive. This is within the 30 min time frame not outside it however last week he was having these faint lines after 30 mins also. We are confused. He is isolating (away from us) but has been isolating for 12 days now. Has mild cold symptoms and covid toes, he's also had covid before but a while ago.

Can a lateral flow be more sensitive than a PCR for some people?!

AustinPowerful · 15/08/2021 16:59

@Lineeyesoverhere yes I had no symptoms of anything!

Lineeyesoverhere · 15/08/2021 17:31

@PipPippin I’m wondering if I should get my DS retested as he’s had faints outside of window too. But not sure if I’m totally over thinking this- hence my NC!

A lateral flow test can pick up a positive result if you have had covid for up to 90 days. Although you are negative and free from an active virus. A PCR would show the true result which in this case is negative. Hth

Myal · 15/08/2021 21:52

I'd do a PCR.
I did a LFT on weds for me and my mum, both came up negative until I sent a picture to my sister and zoomed in. My mums test showed the lightest of lines and for peace of mind, booked a PCR for us both; we're both positive as is now DH and DD4.

Lft question
worriedatthemoment · 15/08/2021 23:47

I always check after 30/ 40 mins and often throw away, sometimes they do get left out if kids do and never change
Although i can't see the line in the photo so I would of missed that

joystir59 · 15/08/2021 23:57

I can't see that faint line, I'd have missed that too.

LitCrit · 16/08/2021 00:14

Gist they really are useless aren’t they, if they’re that faint? I haven’t been able to spot a single faint line on the suspect that various people have posted on her over the last couple of months.

mrssunshinexxx · 16/08/2021 00:45

@geddyw can you send me the link where you get the nose only lateral flows from please.
