Travel with two passports /dual nationality us and uk

Anyone know whether dual citizens are supposed to bring British passports when travelling?

My DH and DCs have both uk and us passports but slight hitch is that DC’s British passport recently expired and we haven’t yet received the new one. We are flying to the US soon and I wonder if there are likely to be issues on either leaving or returning to the uk if she just has the us passport.

Thanks,

I also have both UK and US passports. The IK does not require that British citizens use their British passport to enter or leave the UK. It makes things easier, sure, but not necessary.

The US, however, requires by law that all US citizens must enter the US with their US passport. So if the US passport was expired that would be an issue. The UK passport being expired is not an issue. Just use the US one throughout.

You don't have to have your UK one but you do get treated as a tourist on the way in. Which means if you live in the UK you should renew it.

It’s easier to carry both when you return to the UK

Thanks all- that’s really reassuring - phew!

When do you fly? When I got DS's first passport it arrived in a week even though they only guarantee a longer period, a renewal might be quick if you do it online.

By way of update … no issues at all either leaving or returning to the uk on just a us passport. Big relief ..
