New symptoms include sneezing and 'cold'

We've all got COVID, including DH, me and both DSs (19 and 22).

We are all double vaccinated .

Symptoms are like a bad cold - sneezing, scratchy eyes, croaky and sore throat.

numerous Lateral flows all negative in 2 of us. PCRs all positive.

I've seen limited info about sneezing being a new symptom but hadn't really known to look out for it.

Do you think it's common knowledge in your circle?

I do the Zoe covid symptoms app. Twice in July they've advised me to have a pcr test (and if Zoe recommends that you do, it's valid for the NHS sight). Both times it's been because my hayfever (starts in February, continued until late September for me) symptoms of sneezing and a runny nose are worse than usual.

The app also gives information on, for example, on the different symptoms you may experience depending on your vaccination status. It's worth doing.

DC (12) had Covid recently. Only symptoms were a mild sore throat and some nausea. Picked up on a random LFT or we wouldn't have known it was Covid. Lost sense of smell, but that was several days after the positive result. DH then caught it off her and his only symptoms were 24 hours of feeling a bit like he was going down with a cold, followed by short-term loss of smell a few days later. There must be so many positive people who don't realise they have Covid.

Ohpulltheotherone · 05/08/2021 18:57

There’s no suggesting that cases are falling because people are mistaking a covid for a cold or hayfever Confused

People aren’t allowed to present as even slightly ill these days - especially children at nursery. We’re having to test them at the first sight of a (perfectly common) childhood sniffle.

Surely people with hayfever will know if it feels different? Surely the other symptoms point you in the direction of getting tested?

If there is an impact on falling numbers due to people confusing Hmm covid symptoms for hayfever then is it realistically a high impact? Or is more likely negligible?

Colds still exist, if you’ve got a streaming nose and sneezing and feel like you’ve got a cold - the chances are you’ve got a cold, but now we live in a society which won’t accept that and everyone starts giving you the side eye if you even sniff out loud

So you would have picked it up because she lost her sense of smell within a few days….and then your DH followed the same pattern….loss of smell being one of the main symptoms throughout…

No one suggested you get symptoms immediately- surely it’s obvious that the spread is caused in the most part by people who are contagious before their symptoms kick in?

SamprasTheRabbit · 05/08/2021 19:00

Is anything not on the list of possible symptoms?
I swear soon there will be a thread about vaginal dryness and someone will come along and suggest a PCR.

TuckMyWin · 05/08/2021 19:10

Wasn’t it in the news a while back that being tired and feeling a bit ‘iffy’ was a symptom requiring a test? Jeez, I always feel tired and a bit under the weather. I have a full on job, two small children, and a very busy life. Perhaps I should just lock myself in the house until I retire? Seriously though, I also get serious hayfever every summer, I have literally zero chance at the moment of knowing I have covid if the symptoms are being a bit tired and sneezing a lot.

VanGoSunflowers · 05/08/2021 19:16

I feel absolutely shattered and a bit ‘iffy’ - also getting some nausea and have been sneezing. Negative LFT 🤷‍♀️

Now you mention it 🤔😂😂

As an aside the drop in cases is genuine because hospitalisations are also dropping.
If cases were still rising but not being tested hospitalisations would continue to rise

TuckMyWin · 05/08/2021 19:20

“ As an aside the drop in cases is genuine because hospitalisations are also dropping.

Also, delta has been the most prevalent variant for weeks now. If those are the symptoms of the delta variant, then why wouldn’t cases have dropped before now?

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 05/08/2021 19:21

@Summerofcontent - I think hospitalisation is thankfully much reduced because of the vaccine.

We've all had it in our house and varied between felt rubbish / went to bed for a good few days, but fortunately nothing serious.

I imagine many, many people with 'colds' and 'hayfever' do actually have Covid.

Whether recognising that's important or not in a predominantly vaccinated community, I don't know 🤷‍♀️

What I DO know is that the government advice & Covid testing criteria is woefully outdated and there must be an underlying reason behind that.

Oh bugger, I shouldn't have opened this thread Grin

I've been ill all week. Rotten sore throat, feel crap and very tired.
now the throat is shifting and I'm sneezing and getting cold symptoms.

I've done 2 LFT, one on day one of symptoms, one yesterday. Both negative.

No real reason to think I have it, I was working away last week (but in a covid bubble) came home very tired and stressed, and my stress illness is always sore throat, so didn't think anything of it.

I don't want to do a pcr Sad we're off on holiday next week. (in UK)

Greenrubber · 05/08/2021 19:22

My LFT were negative for 3 days running after symptoms started went and got a PCR and it was positive and then my LFT were positive on the following days
My symptoms were

Tiredness
Nausea
Productive cough
And weird ashy taste

DD symptoms
Tired
Sneezing
Temp

DHs symptoms
Aches
Productive cough
Tiredness
Headache
Loss of appetite

steppemum · 05/08/2021 19:26

you see when I look at Greenrubber's list, each of them had one of the testable symptoms:
taste
temp
cough

so even though there are other symptoms, those three were still there

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 05/08/2021 19:27

I get that, @steppemum.

Bloody rotten position to be in.

If it helps with details, if you do have a PCR and test positive, you only have to self isolate from the day your symptoms started, so by sounds of it, you're already 5 or so days in?

Unfortunately, my family had general feeling awful, banging headache, sore throat, blocked nose and sneezing.

I would imagine it is because they can’t reasonably ask people to test every time they feel a bit weird, or have a headache. We’d all be testing constantly. Fever, loss of taste a smell and a new continuous cough are things that don’t have -too much- cross over with other milder illnesses like colds and seasonal allergies.

This really made me laugh 😂
TuckMyWin · 05/08/2021 19:35

Or rather, people wouldn’t be testing constantly, they just wouldn’t bother at all. As a previous poster said, if a fair proportion of people still have one of the ‘classic’ symptoms, as well as any other symptoms, then if those people test you catch a fair proportion of cases. If you ask people to test every time they get a headache or sneeze a bit more than usual, nobody will bother testing, and you will catch far fewer cases.

neonorchid · 05/08/2021 19:37

I've just sent my 14yo for a PCR test last minute. They have felt unwell since yesterday blocked/runny nose, headache, just generally feeling off colour. Paracetamol isn't helping symptoms either. LFT came back negative but I don't trust them.

Iggly · 05/08/2021 19:41

The three main symptoms are not unusual for other illnesses so I don’t buy that.

People were previously testing for coughs (we did too!) but negative. Happened so many times.

Updating the symptoms- is a sensible approach IMO but this government has no interest in letting numbers go up and are crossing their fingers that vaccine rates will do the job. Luckily for them and us, I think they may have got away with it.

TuckMyWin · 05/08/2021 19:49

They’re a lot more unusual than many of the other symptoms people are listing here.

I’ve had a PCR test three times in the last 18 months based on the classic symptoms. My young children have both had maybe 5 each.

If we’d tested every time we got a headache or more tired than usual, or sneezed a bit, we’d have been there every week, and we’d have stopped testing altogether.

My dh felt bit off thursday but work been stressfull and then Friday night fely unwell and developed runny nose and headache, sat same , but sat evening slight cough so he tested sun but came back negative
He felt a bit worse, mon , tues and weds started to feel better as cough disappeared and today just left with slight headache and little bit if cold.
He has done several lvt as well all negative but its hard as even though he had a negative pcr I am still questioning it and wondering if he should take another , but colds and other virus are still around
So far none of us have caught from him although ds had sore throat , cold and a pathetic cough a week before dh fell ill and again negative pcr and he was ok within days

Abraxan · 05/08/2021 20:10

There are still just colds and hayfever happening too.

Dd has had a cold all last week - 4 LFTs and 2 PCRs all negative.
Just a cold and possibly hayfever on top.

worriedatthemoment · 05/08/2021 21:23

@Abraxan what made you do 2 pcr's ?

DontDrinkDontSmokeWhatDoIDo · 06/08/2021 08:58

@neonorchid - I hope your child gets better soon x
