Now I see it’s antibodies. Lots of posters claiming that they, their dp, their neighbour and their neighbour’s dustman’s aunt have no antibodies from their vaccine. Some people fail to develop antibodies, but all of them appear to be on Mumsnet….

There’s always a panic du jour, from worrying about catching covid from an Amazon parcel, to long covid 3hours after being exposed. 18 months of panics which drop off active convos as soon as something else turns up which affects a surprising number of people on here.

It’s thoroughly exhausting.

Darbs76 · 03/08/2021 19:08

I had people ask me if I’ve called the GP about long Covid and it’s not even been 3wks yet!

BoomChicka · 03/08/2021 20:03

The mental health fallout from this pandemic is going to be awful. Some of the posts I see on here and other forums are really sad, and our MH services could not cope before covid. Plus some people won't believe they are ill as they go online and get validation from other ill people that fuels their anxiety.

Bordois · 03/08/2021 20:19

@MarshaBradyo

I feel like all that noise and criticism re ‘U.K. experiment’ has faded away - letters, WHO, on here
This bit about the graph amuses me way more than it should do...

Have any of the doomsayers been back to comment on the fallen cases? And have any of the 1,200 eminent scientists come out and said “we fucked up”?

Christina Pagel hung her flag on changes from 19th July not having fed through yet. It's a brave choice, but presumably in late September when school cases feed in she'll say that was her proof.
MarshaBradyo · 03/08/2021 21:27

Yes I’m sure she will.

What did she want to wait for? As won’t pretty much everyone be double vaccinated by then

Or is she a keep cases low forever type - however you do that

Whatever she says about it next it was hyped up to talk about it in the way she did

Sunshinegirl82 · 03/08/2021 23:26

I find the certainty/single mindedness that some posters seem to have quite frustrating. There is literally no room for any sort of acceptance that there is a level of uncertainty about the entire situation and that there can be logic and rationale behind decisions they don't agree with.

It was particularly prolific around the 19th July reopening, swathes of posters stating with complete confidence that there was zero possibility that it could be anything other than an unmitigated disaster. The most prolific seem to have gone very quiet over the last week.

worriedatthemoment · 03/08/2021 23:27

How do people even know if they have antibodies ?

It's already been explained by experts that cases 'fall' when tests do. I.e. no test = no official case. People are deleting or turning off the app - and to make extra sure, the government is making it less sensitive.
Tealightsandd · 03/08/2021 23:32

Perhaps she's taking tips from the anti smoking brigade?

Yes agreed. Particularly re the extreme anxiety re vaccines. Likewise the prospect of mask wearing (something that has been the norm in East Asia for years with no impact on mental health).

Hopefully the news that Boris (who is vaccinated) is to become a father again will have helped reassure some of the most super anxious wrt concerns over vaccines and fertility.

Snookie00 · 03/08/2021 23:38

@Tealightsandd. Even indie Sage doomsayer in chief Christina Pagel admitted live on tv and on Twitter that there is a drop as there’s a drop in new hospital admissions too. If she can embarrassingly publicly admit it that she was wrong, then why can’t you?

Tealightsandd · 03/08/2021 23:39

Separately re mental health. I definitely hope there will be funding for the CV and elderly (particularly those in care homes). The mental distress of being treated as expendable and left as sitting ducks will have taken it's toll.

worriedatthemoment · 03/08/2021 23:43

@Tealightsandd could the less tests also be as less people are being pinged etc less are going for a test due to being a contact
Or is it percentage positive down per test ?
I hope its just they are down as less infection around

Tealightsandd · 03/08/2021 23:45

@Snookie00

Hospitalisations and deaths are increasing.

www.ons.gov.uk/peoplepopulationandcommunity/healthandsocialcare/conditionsanddiseases/articles/coronaviruscovid19/latestinsights

There's also Long Covid to think about (admittedly perhaps not for the current government, since they'll likely be long gone before the full extent of the problem is known and acknowledged).

Btw the "doomers" are the people who refuse to accept there's a problemthat needs dealing with. Hence why the problem didn't go away. Had people accepted it (and dealt with it properly), things would've been over with a year ago and there wouldn't have been a Delta strain.

Snookie00 · 03/08/2021 23:51

Not that I expect you to take on board any information that doesn’t tally with your narrative, the graph in that link only goes up until 25th July. It has subsequently started to fall. Rates of new hospital admissions are falling and no of deaths are expected to start falling within days due to this.

I’m sure you’ll now tell us to ignore cases, admissions and deaths as you find a new angle. Assume it’ll be Long covid and mental health

ichundich · 03/08/2021 23:53

@IcedPurple

Yes, the large number of posters who seemed to have all these teachers dying in their schools were making me roll my eyes about.

As I recall, the expression was 'teachers dropping like flies'.

The drama of it all!

I suspect quite a few of these posters will be back their wild claims come the end of the summer holidays!
Darkchocolateandcoffee · 03/08/2021 23:54

@WouldBeGood

There’s also a huge amount of reports on here if teacher deaths - one poster was claiming three in their school. There didn’t seem to have been news reports about this 🤷🏻‍♀️
Oh yes I remember this!

Good news about the fall. Posters will go on about people not testing but this info on hospitalisation is useful.
Snookie00 · 04/08/2021 00:01

Yes it is good news @MarshaBradyo. There was always a worry that the drop in cases wasn’t real due to under-testing but admissions plateauing and now dropping off seem to indicate that cases are not rising. Still a long way to go but the apocalyptic predictions of cases spiralling post-19th July and hospitals being swamped is not happening.

Tealightsandd · 04/08/2021 00:03

Cautious optimism is fine. False complacency isn't (it's dangerous).

It's ridiculous to casually dismiss the risks of Long Covid.

It's foolish to ignore potential storm clouds brewing. Always better to hope for the best - but prepare for the worst.

The booster jabs should help, I think.
(There, you see. Not all doom and gloom from me.) Wink

As for mental health. I posted positivity. The news that Boris is due to become a father again. As he's been vaccinated, that should help to reassure the anxiety ridden - who were vaccine hesitant due to fertility concerns.

worriedatthemoment · 04/08/2021 00:05

@Tealightsandd mmm even countries who dealt with it and had closed borders are now dealing with delta strain ??
We know its real , we know its horrible but most of us know we now have to live with it, maybe that isn't great but that is what it is, and cases and hospitalisations seem to be going down, and I for one hope that is because vaccines etc are working and we are seeing the back of this as some of us have to think positively

WouldBeGood · 04/08/2021 00:06

Long Covid isn’t a reason for restrictions

Tealightsandd · 04/08/2021 00:08

As I recall, the expression was 'teachers dropping like flies'...The drama of it all!

Really rather offensive disabilist contempt for people suffering Long Covid disability - given the data. Teachers and school staff have the second highest prevalence of Long Covid (after HCP).
