AZ side effect - anyone had this?

A colleague had AZ first dose and texted to check on her and to offer to cover for her on Monday if needed etc, she mentioned that she is having uncontrollable (her words) chills..to the point her teeth are chattering. Has anyone had this? How long did you have it for? She has taken paracetamol, no fever yet.

A couple of the teachers I work with had fever and chills for a couple of days after AZ.

VaccineAnxiety · 31/07/2021 00:03

She said no fever when I texted but she did sound distressed about the teeth chattering -

Yep, overnight. It lasted about 8hrs and I was shivering/sweating too

Lindy2 · 31/07/2021 00:12

I had chills for about 4 - 5 hours and then it suddenly, overnight turned into hot sweats.

Has she had Covid? I'd had Covid 8 weeks before my first vaccination which meant I was likely to get side effects.

Taking paracetamol should help. As will going to bed and getting some sleep. Hopefully they won't last too long.

I had zero side effects after my second jab

Silkiecats · 31/07/2021 00:19

Both DH and I had this, fairly common side effect, and we had it for 12 to 24 hours or so within first 48 hours. Worth drinking a lot of water and taking paracetomol. I got hot sweats after it went but am peri menopause age so could have been that starting, that was just at night though.

FreddieLounds · 31/07/2021 00:21

I had exactly those symptoms for about 8 hours overnight, the first night after my AZ. I then had a flare of my autoimmune condition for a week or so. Absolutely zero side-effects with the second shot.

DumDum32 · 31/07/2021 00:24

@FreddieLounds I had the exact same experience as you.

blameitonthecaffeine · 31/07/2021 01:21

Yes, I did . To be honest, nearly all under 50s that I know seemed to have it to some degree. Unpleasant but not unusual.

WelshWhisky · 31/07/2021 01:28

After my first AZ jab I woke with a headache. I took some paracetamol and went back to sleep for an hour. Later that afternoon I felt a bit shivery. The following morning I was fine. No side effects at all after my second jab.

RubyGoat · 31/07/2021 01:40

The night after I had my first AZ jab, I put about an extra 5 blankets on my side of the bed. Thick socks, hot water bottle, hat but still shivering until DH warmed me up with cuddles (not the fun kind, Grin he's perpetually boiling!) It lasted about 24 hours. Bit of a headache, quite short lived & went off with paracetamol. Arm ached about a week.

I barely noticed the second jab.

Scutterbug · 31/07/2021 01:41

My husband did, lasted about 8 hours. Proper teeth chattering chills!

MRex · 31/07/2021 08:01

DH and SIL both had that; DH just for a couple of hours and SIL for nearly a day.

VaccineAnxiety · 31/07/2021 08:40

Thank you all- she is under 50. I’ll text her later to check in her..it’s reassuring to know it’s common.

Nobloat21 · 31/07/2021 08:45

Yes 12-24 hours, then it should just stop! Lots of water and take paracetamol. It's really, really common.

DinosaurDiana · 31/07/2021 08:46

Get her to have ibuprofen too.

VaccineAnxiety · 31/07/2021 08:52

@Nobloat21 ahh that might be a reason, she said she hasn’t eaten/drunk much.

OP posts:
VaccineAnxiety · 31/07/2021 08:54

I’m not that close with her so might not be able to ask too many probing questions- I do text/keep in touch with anyone who is off sick incase I can help. It’s not nice to feel lonely when you are at your worst.

I’ll text her later to check snd see if I can suggest that she ensures that she keeps herself hydrated

Yes! First night, horrible chills. Why are you asking op? Do you not believe her?

VaccineAnxiety · 31/07/2021 09:11

@BlueorOlive 🤔 huh? I’m asking because
A). She sounded worried
B). She said she expected fever and chills but she also said never experienced chills like this , teeth chattering so was slightly perturbed
C). I’ve not had the vaccine yet so cannot speak from experience
D). Thought it’ll be nice to reassure her that is is common
E). Like me she doesn’t have family/friends here so thought it’ll be nice to support her

No it’s not my habit to mid trust what anyone says without enough information

Sorry @VaccineAnxiety. Blush woke up feeling a tad tetchy. It's nice of you to look out for your colleague.

OatyBarKid · 31/07/2021 12:21

Yup I had it, heard it's very common.

I had a 40° temperature, chills so bad I could barely pull the covers up and had 5 covers on the bed as so cold. Not pleasant but it passed in a matter of hours.

VaccineAnxiety · 31/07/2021 12:26

@OatyBarKid thank you- is it not dangerous for temperature to spike to 40?

OP posts:
VaccineAnxiety · 31/07/2021 12:27

@BlueorOlive no problem-

OP posts:
NotMyCat · 31/07/2021 12:57

It happens with another medication I inject weekly - I get a temperature, chills, shivering etc. AZ was like that for me but much less severe!
The temp spike is just your body reacting

OatyBarKid · 31/07/2021 14:18

@VaccineAnxiety I don't believe so in adults. In a young child it can be if it won't reduce with medicines.
