Contaminated my PCR! Sh*t!!

I have just taken my day 8 test and put the sample in the liquid. As I snapped off the stick at the break point it flicked out of the tube and landed on the carpet! I quickly put it back in the tube but it’s contaminated isn’t it :( It’s going to come back inconclusive I’m sure and I’ll have to fork out another 80 quid and quarantine a few more days :( This happen to anyone else?

It’s not ideal but I don’t imagine it’s likely to come back inconclusive from a few seconds on the carpet. The nightmare scenario would be - I don’t know - particles of walked-in faeces in that exact spot on the carpet from a Covid-positive animal eg a cat but that is so vanishingly unlikely.

It'll be fine

Wanttocry · 30/07/2021 08:41

We tested DD last year when she was about 13 months old. We didn’t realise we didn’t have to do her throat so she sucked on it while we did that. She then grabbed the swab when we were doing her nose, snapped it in half and threw it across the car.
It didn’t come back inconclusive, it was negative (although I’m sure it wasn’t very accurate).

Surely this is where the 10second rule comes in!!

I'm sure it will be fine 👍🏻

Mamibaer · 30/07/2021 09:45

Thanks so much for the reassurance everyone!

Go to the pharmacy and pick up a lateral flow kit. Use one of the swabs from that kit to swab yourself again and put that in the liquid pot.

ImNotReallyHere · 30/07/2021 10:58

I'm afraid to say my DS did this at the test centre and it flicked onto the desk. His did come back inconclusive and we had to test again. I did it for him the second time and it's easy to see how you've done it. They are tricky to snap.
Keeping fingers crossed for you.

coffeeisthebest · 30/07/2021 12:57

Well I paid £130 for day 2 and day 8 tests and only received the day 2 result after extensive complaining. Never received my day 8 result. The whole process appears to be a joke so I really wouldn't worry too much.

UpstreamSwimmer · 30/07/2021 13:18

Nobody cares whether you send it back or not. As long as you can show a test booked, there's no follow up. I would just bin it.

Amboseli · 30/07/2021 13:38

We came back from Majorca on 27th. Were meant to do our day 2 tests yesterday. But there was a glitch on the website where you register the test kit and the barcode showed as invalid. Everybody who was on a flight on the 27th was affected according to TUI, nobody could register their day 2 test.

It's now been sorted out but we had to do our day 2 test on day 3 and if contact tracing goes back 48 hours it doesn't cover the flight!

Good idea but isn't OP meant to be isolating? Or are you allowed out with day 8 tests?
Palavah · 31/07/2021 16:18

You're allowed out for testing? Or perhaps a kindly neighbour could collect.

BiscuitDrama · 31/07/2021 16:21

I think the swabs are different. Sorry.

Mamibaer · 31/07/2021 21:27

Just got a negative test result. Phew! :)

They aren't, they're all standard.

Great news @mamibear

BiscuitDrama · 01/08/2021 09:26

Well the ones we’ve had have been different Smile More of a brush in the LFTs.
