If test and trace contact you when on holiday…

Just wondering as am off on holiday shortly, if test and trace contact you while you are on holiday (either abroad or in this country) can you isolate where you are? I have train tickets booked for a holiday and have return tickets for a specific date so would struggle to get home before that date, if test and trace contacted me when I was on holiday to say one of us had been near a positive contact what would I do?

Could you just get a payg sim for the holiday?

middleager · 29/07/2021 14:01

We have bought holiday insurance inc Covid 'cover' for a uk hol, family of 4, 5 days. It was a tenner.

Don't answer the phone. Can you take off voicemail.
You might get a text I suppose....

sleepwouldbenice · 29/07/2021 14:14

Aware of the obvious response to this....but Boris stayed at Chequers
....

AtomicBronde · 29/07/2021 14:29

I don’t have notifications on my phone so a text can go unread for a few days. I also have over 13,000 unread emails so an email would probably get lost in my inbox.

I would literally weep if I was contacted on my way to our little break, I’ve been to the hairdressers today and I’m so worried that something will happen! They had to close a few weeks ago as one member of staff was positive. Nowhere else would be able to trace my whereabouts as I don’t have the app and I wouldn’t leave my details anywhere else.

I presume they just keep ringing you if you don’t respond to messages etc?

senoritarita · 29/07/2021 14:34

Throw phone in sea?

Sorry! Not helpful. I have no idea

Gosh what a ludicrous situation we are all in

MummytoGeorgie · 29/07/2021 14:41

Ignore it

ineedaholidaynow · 29/07/2021 14:48

I'm assuming if you ignore the call you could still get fined

Comefromaway · 29/07/2021 14:51

@Pissedoff1234

How on earth do you get home without using public transport if you haven't driven to your destination and can't drive. Even with all the money in the world at your own expense, it's impossible.
Dh is a teacher. He was contacted as he'd been in close contact with a student of his. He doesn't drive and works 45 miles away. He got a train and a taxi home.

How do they know you've got your phone with you?

These things were thought of though by people in government who really don't have to worry about everyday things in life, just look at Boris isolating at Chequers as an example.

and how do they know that the phone number they have is even correct, it could be an old number, its only one that someone else has passed on

bizboz · 29/07/2021 15:04

They contacted me by phone after DC tested positive and the call came up as NHS test and trace so you would know if it is them calling. I don't know if they would just text or email non-household contacts.

Porcupineintherough · 29/07/2021 15:15

I've just insured 4 of us against costs associated with curtailment, extension or cancellation of our holiday by contracting COVID or being asked to self isolate. Cost £10 for a week's holiday in the UK.

Porcupineintherough · 29/07/2021 15:16

@Pissedoff1234 I guess in those circumstances you stay put and your insurance pays the costs associated with that.

Katie517 · 29/07/2021 16:21

Most people I have spoken to have been blocking the number and turning voicemail off before their holidays. Contact isolation ends in mid aug anyway so it won’t be an issue after that.

Katie517 · 29/07/2021 16:25

Also for those saying they can text or email, I have blocked all text messages from non contacts due to the amount of spam texts I used to get, anyone I speak to uses WhatsApp anyway and I don’t check email on my personal phone so there are people who would easily miss these.

Abraxan · 29/07/2021 17:13

Only for those fully vaccinated or under 18 though, so I guess a fair few people might still need to.

I've got fingers crossed we can get to the 16th without.

We go away in just over a week. Dh is out at work each day and teen Dd is still out with friends, pubs, clubs etc. Though she is stopping much of that from this weekend as she is also going away to a festival shortly after we go away, and wants to get there without isolation.

Had a panic this past week as Dd has nasty cough, hayfever symptoms and cold symptoms. She's had 2 PCRs and 4 LFTs - all negative though so clearly a different bug going round instead.

Northernlurker · 29/07/2021 17:40

It can't be proved you read a text or email. So many spam ones anyway.....
Don't answer your phone and enjoy your holiday.
I'm turning my phone off for at least a few days. Less stress.

HalfwomanHalfcookie · 29/07/2021 19:15

Mobile phones are a curse I've decided.
This wouldn't have been possible a few years ago. We'd just be able to go away without worrying about a call telling us to go home and isolate.

WaltzingTilda · 29/07/2021 19:20

Switch off voicemail and keep phone switched off. Only switch on if you need to call 999

Unsure33 · 29/07/2021 19:43

Unbelievable .

What a load of selfish advice .

The OP said track and trace . So if she ignored it she could be spreading the virus in the holiday home and to the poor cleaners or anyone they met .

Really!

As could any of the thousands of people who have been told they no longer need to isolate as a contact due to their job.

So Janet the Nurse could be on her holiday, and wouldnt get a call, but Kathy the HR admin would.

Bloody bonkers.

And it 2 weeks time nobody who is a contact has to isolate if they've had both jabs.

Crunchymum · 29/07/2021 20:21

So glad we're going away just as the contact tracing rules change!!

@Nomorepies it could still be a scam caller though even if it shows as track and trace.
