Do we have to isolate again? Positive case in household

DD (5) got her positive Covid result, symptoms started on Friday. DH and I had it recently - his isolation ended a week ago, mine ended on Wednesday. Do DH and I now have to isolate again? How quickly can you re-catch it, could we catch it again from DD so soon? Sad

Yep unless her symptoms starting during the original isolation period of first household case. (Dd here got symptoms day before our isolation ended - she had to restart isolation but rest were able to end it - had anyone else developed symptoms beyond that date then the whole household would have had to isolate again).

coffeepleeease · 25/07/2021 13:07

@FookSake

Yes, as you haven’t had it and you are exposed to your DD you have to isolate for the 10 days from when her symptoms started as you are still at risk of getting it from her the next 10 days.
I could catch it again 2 days after after my isolation ending from having it?

So you did have Covid ?

sweetheartyparty · 25/07/2021 13:15

Beat of 3. Ring 119 again

Yes DH and I both had it, we didn't test DD as she had no symptoms, she obviously isolated with us. Then got symptoms 2 days after my isolation ended, and has got her positive result now

I meant best

Imnothereforthedrama · 25/07/2021 13:18

Then definitely not did your dh tell them you had Covid ? I think the chances of someone passing Covid back to you days later are slim . you’ll still have the antibodies especially 2 days after ending isolation , you still have Covid your just less likely to be infectious after 10 days . You can test positive 90 days or even longer after having Covid. .

She just said she has had it .

Absolutely minuscule chance but it is possible to have two different variants at once or shorty after each other. I’d wager almost all I have that you had the same variant that your DD now has and you will be fine.

Brown76 · 25/07/2021 13:37

Whaaat?? You can catch it again days after recovering from it?

I guess there's a small chance it could be a different variant. However she's not really been anywhere as we've been isolating! Popped out for lunch and to a toy shop so always a tiny chance I guess

Isolation is about minimising the risk of spreading the infection outside of your household. You can still carry the virus afyer being previously infected, regardless of how little time in between. I would isolate from the day your DD started showing symptoms (friday)

Family143 · 25/07/2021 13:51

It seems absolutely ridiculous that the official 'covid hotline' with a specific 'advice on isolation' option don't actually know the answer!

hellcatspangle · 25/07/2021 13:53

There is no way I would isolate again a few days after after having covid, no matter what the rules state (and I'm generally very well behaved!)

Exactly. Shocking!

Ring them again. Best of 3?!

It is shocking that the experts on this don’t even know 🙄

Family143 · 25/07/2021 14:01

Tbh in your situation I agree with
hellcatspangle and wouldn't isolate again and I am a rule follower too

Northernsoullover · 25/07/2021 14:05

Have the contact tracers called you yet? Ask them. Where I live the contact tracers and 119 are not the same and a clinical lead may be able to help you.

No they haven't, and they never called me when I had Covid which surprised me!

Thanks for replies, mixed opinions it seems, we've decided to err on the side of caution and isolate

Surely you don't have to? If you had confirmed covid and recovered days ago... there's no way you could get it again so quickly; your body would be stuffed with antibodies.

Agree completely bizarre the t&t operatives told you 2 different things.

I really don't know. I'm confused. No wonder so many people don't know what to do!

I think at this stage you have to be pragmatic. There is no report of anyone catching covid again that quickly so I wouldn’t isolate any longer. Clearly DD will have to stay home for 10 days after her symptoms started. There is zero benefit to you isolating for any longer.

Is there not? That's reassuring!

I think because there is no rule into how quickly you can be re infected that’s why you got 2 different answers.
But logically it’s very unlikely you will have caught Covid be clear of Covid and re caught it again all within 2 weeks.
You will still have Covid it’s just your not infectious and you should have the antibodies. I personally wouldn’t isolate again.
