I think the only way to get people who don’t want something is to tell them they can’t have it.

Why are we wasting such resources, and more importantly vaccine doses that could be used by the rest of the world, to wait for people to decide to have it?

OP posts:
Bordois · 22/07/2021 21:47

How is anything being wasted?

PeonyTime · 22/07/2021 21:47

What about those who turn 18 after then?

Itsprobablynotcominghome · 22/07/2021 21:53

@Bordois

How is anything being wasted?
A) you can’t store reconstituted vials very long

B) stuff sitting in our freezers ticking the clock down on the expiry

Obviously fine.

And 16+ if they change it. Or anyone else who becomes CEV etc but didn’t want it before, I’m not a monster.

But widespread availability all over the country for the hope that someone pops by? Waste of time.

Are you drunk?

What about the young people turning 18? How are their first vaccines a waste?

ragged · 22/07/2021 21:56

Not convinced, OP. On your logic, charge £20 a dose -- people value things they actually paid for.

People age 12+ in USA could get their vaccinations from 1 April -- USA are still offering first doses now.

thenakedmolerat · 22/07/2021 21:58

But the people who don't want it won't care if it's not available to them because they don't want it anyway.
What a weird post

How’s that going for them?

Sure! Then let’s empty our freezers of millions of doses and give them to people that do want it! Most of the rest of the world!

XenoBitch · 22/07/2021 22:01

I will be glad to be told I can't have it. Hopefully, the letters and texts will stop.

WeatheringStorms22 · 22/07/2021 22:01

So in order to encourage take up you'd...stop take up.

Not sure I understand the logic to be honest.

If it was designed as a ploy to force people into it before it was too late, it would never work. I've decided not to have it and you could slap any date on my offer you wanted, it wouldn't change my mind.

Anyway, doses...first, second, twentieth booster...will never stop now. They'll always be there.

Itsprobablynotcominghome · 22/07/2021 22:02

See! Everyone’s on board.

It’s win, win.

ragged · 22/07/2021 22:04

If the plan is to divert the doses to poor countries then I'm behind your plan, OP. If only.

@ragged

Yes. Less developed countries too, but we should ensure they have all the other necessary personnel and other equipment etc needed.

My vote would be South Korea. They would vaccinate their population overnight with enough supply. Plus they have agreed deals to produce billions of vaccines, so it would be pragmatic for the rest of the world to ensure they aren’t disrupted in that effort.

GCrebel · 22/07/2021 22:25

As well as the newly turned eighteen year olds, what about
Eligible under 18s?
Those who have been unable to have their first dose due to active virus
Those who were initially reluctant and who have now changed their minds?
Pregnant women who have chosen to wait until after they have given birth?

If people are eligible for the vaccine and willing to have it, let's not put barriers in their way.

CrunchyCarrot · 22/07/2021 22:29

Remember some countries don't have enough freezers in order to store vaccines that need those conditions!

UmteenthUser · 22/07/2021 22:37

School has finished now...

Wellbythebloodyhell · 22/07/2021 22:38

Obviously In time the vaccine centres will close so months down the line it won't be as easy as it is now to obtain a vaccine but it shouldn't be withdrawn completely

Bordois · 22/07/2021 22:43

None of that applies whilst there are still second doses to do.

MercyBooth · 23/07/2021 00:35

Psyops OP?

Helensburghmiddleagedmum · 23/07/2021 02:34

Also young people who haven't had first dose yet and recently tested positive have to wait a month

PurpleDaisies · 23/07/2021 03:24

This is such a bad idea.

You know it’s a good thing when people change their minds and get vaccinated? How will this help someone who has made a poor health choice to make a better one?

rainbowfairylights · 23/07/2021 03:40

I'd be fucked then. I really want the vaccine, and I'm clinically vulnerable... I broke my knee last month and now can't get out of my house to get the first dose. So your suggestion is to just remove the option of getting the first vaccine altogether, even though lots of people are still waiting and will still be waiting after August? Ridiculous.

onelittlefrog · 23/07/2021 05:20

Agreed. Seems a daft idea to me.

I guess OP's thinking is that if we put a deadline on it, everyone who is currently on the fence will suddenly want it, because they'll be worried that they can't have it further down the line?

I don't think that's very likely OP and I don't think that it will result in more people being vaccinated than what they are doing now, which is just making it as widely available as possible.

Pingued · 23/07/2021 06:02

I expect someone clever is making sure there won't be loads sat around unused. Stock control and all that.
