Australians back in lockdown, while our restrictions are gone. Our exit wave could be over by September.

Just because sadly the Australians are having a difficult time it doesn't mean we have "got it right" does it?

Freedom Day for example, bloody stupid idea.

Not vaccinating kids, stupid.

Locking down too late, stupid.

and so on.

PersephoneJames · 21/07/2021 07:47

I don’t necessarily think Australia got it right, but to look at their 900 deaths bs our 130000 and think we did a better job is a little callous. Especially as they may be locking down now but they’ve been more or less open all along.

ShinyGreenElephant · 21/07/2021 07:48

I think there's 130,000 families who would disagree with you there, mine included

WeRTheOnesWeHaveBeenWaitingFor · 21/07/2021 07:48

Let’s hope so
There is no public support for more lockdowns so I don’t think the government has a choice

You can't compare death rates, their population size, density etc is totally different.

So one the one hand you want to compare and on the other you absolutely can't 🙄

Xiaoxiong · 21/07/2021 07:50

Well it's a gamble, and I guess we have the kind of PM who takes them. I'm kind of at the stage where I feel there are no right answers. Every course of action has downsides now...we could end up in lockdown again whether we open up or not. And we could have another variant in any case.

I will say that my local hospitals have 2.7% of the admissions we had in January at similar levels of infection per 100k and cases having risen steadily for the last 3 months, we have had zero deaths since April 9th, and it's summer not winter, so that gives me some hope.

stayathomer · 21/07/2021 07:51

I don't think it's possible to say anything like that without a crystal ball!!

Pinchoftums · 21/07/2021 07:51

I think you can compare death rates to some extent. We had more people die in a day than they have the whole pandemic.

everythingthelighttouches · 21/07/2021 07:52

If you mean “got it right” by the current relaxations of rules, maybe.

No one knows, it is too close to call.

It is one hell of a gamble though.

It’s a global pandemic. There are no good or right answers. Each country’s route through this leads to pain and suffering .

It’s a long game though, so taking a snapshot of what’s happening at any one moment is pretty pointless. We all know by now fortunes can change in a matter of a few weeks.

MissJSmith · 21/07/2021 07:52

According to The Age newspaper today: Melbourne will have spent 185 days – or six months – under tough coronavirus restrictions when the state is due to be released from lockdown next week. That's an awfully long time to be in strict lockdown!

Cornettoninja · 21/07/2021 07:52

Let’s hope so eh because we’ve bet it all on black.

Your entire comment, stupid.

I mean what would you suggest should have been done instead? Mandatory forced vaccines of children and staying in lockdown forever?

VioletRiemelt · 21/07/2021 07:57

Given how many of us are crammed into our tiny island, our rates were always going to be high, along with an NHS on its knees.....

NameChangeNameShange · 21/07/2021 07:57

How many bloody posts today about the 'UK getting it right'. Is someone on commission? It's not a competition, we don't get a medal or the national anthem played

It's a global pandemic which means no one wins, til everyone does. So even if the UK gets everyone vaccinated, and opens up it will just take a new variant in some other country (you know like one of those who can't afford vaccination programs but which are nice and exotic for those all important holidays) and it's all back on.

Try and think of it more like a serious issue and less like the fucking football.

Notonthestairs · 21/07/2021 07:58

Masks, spending money on ventilation in schools and colleges (for flu & CV) and the choice of vaccines for over 12 would be good.

midgemagneto · 21/07/2021 08:01

If every country had been like Australia there would be no delta which is behind Australia current problems

And I suspect the total time they spend in lockdown and restrictions will, by the end, be less than the time we spent locked up

@PaddleBoardingMomma

see?

RumblyMumbly · 21/07/2021 08:03

Or they might not?

You said it yourself, the NHS was on it's knees already. Massively high rates of Covid patients and long covid cases needing investogation & treatment isn't exactly helping.

To staff in hospitals (and to teachers) Flowers

Boulshired · 21/07/2021 08:07

I certainly do not feel we got it right but am curious at how countries in a continuous form of lockdown are going to keep persuading people to take vaccines and then boosters.

Ask me again in September and my response will depend on whether my DC are allowed to go to school.

Farwest · 21/07/2021 08:08

If there's one thing we are not going to think when it's all over, it's that the UK 'got it right'. Nearly 130,000 lost loved ones. It's a tragedy, not a triumph.

Carycy · 21/07/2021 08:09

I don’t think you can completely compare death rates. A lot of people died with covid not of covid. A lot of people that died might have died a couple years later of another respiratory disease so we might have a lower death rate from respiratory diseases in the elderly going forward. Also we developed a vaccine. Without a covid being in the population we wouldn’t have been able to trial it. Australia hasn’t done that. They are lucky other countries have done it for them.

marieantoinehairnet · 21/07/2021 08:09

Err, more sheep than people in Aus so sorry but you can't compare apples with cucumbers
