Who is testing positive? Have they been vaccinated? Are they very ill?

Just as the title really. Loads of cases in our Secondary school, almost non of the kids or vaccinated, and no-one is really very ill with it of the cases I've heard about. So who is testing positive - just the unvaccinated?

OP posts:
Quincejam · 19/07/2021 08:17

My son who is a teacher tested positive last week - he has had one jab. He had a bad cough and raging headache for a couple of days but says he feels much better 2 days after that.

wonkylegs · 19/07/2021 08:25

Admissions are rising rapidly at DHs hospital - they are admitted with Covid (not something else and then test positive - although there are those too)
Most are unvaccinated or only partially vaccinated and are very ill. They have teenagers in ICU. Vaccine uptake in the area isn't great and the case rate is extremely high.
The hospital has gone back into emergency planning mode which also restricts other services.

Iknowtheanswer · 19/07/2021 08:27

DH and I are both double jabbed and currently have Covid. Just like a bad cold, mind you.

AuntieStella · 19/07/2021 08:29

It went round DD's year group (secondary) recently.

AFAIK none of those who caught it (there were quite a lot - first case led to at least 13 others, including 2 staff) needed hospital, but one teen (normal health, one of DD's close friends, so she knows) has been very ill at home.

I don't know anything about how the staff fared, or much about the other pupils)

Mindymomo · 19/07/2021 08:30

The highest proportion is the 20-29 year olds, followed by 14-19 and 30-39 year olds. These groups are mixing more and more likely to have only one vaccination. Being double vaccinated doesn’t mean you can’t catch it.

dalmatianmad · 19/07/2021 08:31

I've just finished a very busy night-shift, I'm a sister in A+E.
We've had lots of poorly positive patients through our doors, some double vaccinated. One was a 45 year old that's been intubated and gone to ITU and he's probably not gonna make it.
Wife was hysterical and screaming that we had so save him because he's been double jabbed. It was awful.
Numbers are deffo going up again.

fanofsun · 19/07/2021 08:35

@dalmatianmad that’s so incredibly hard to hear poor family. Thank you for all you do.

My friend a GP has said to keep wearing masks and social distance. iTU is filling with younger people and they have jabbed people on CPAP.

DigitalGhost · 19/07/2021 08:36

Few of my friends have had it in the past week (early 30s) only one has been particularly unwell and she's the only one not vaccinated at all. Others who are partially jabbed or fully said it was like a bad cold.

DolphinDreams · 19/07/2021 08:36

When you say 'double jabbed' - which vaccine is that please ?

Helenluvsrob · 19/07/2021 08:36

Statistically - taking out the under 20s as approaching 90% of people have had at least 1 jab an awful lot of people ARE vaccinated.

Yes less ill to an extent but like @dalmatianmad I have experience of very ill younger double vax people.

BTW this might be a good time to say , as of yet , the published data is no pregnant women have been admitted if double vax ( statistically it’ll happen ) a friend lost twins at 15 weeks when unwell with it before vax came in

VanGoSunflowers · 19/07/2021 08:37

Only people I know of are single jabbed and haven’t been very ill at all.

SquashMinusIsShit · 19/07/2021 08:39

All, single vaccine, double vaccinated or not at all in my experience

dalmatianmad · 19/07/2021 08:41

Dolphin I'm not sure. We didn't ask we were doing CPR on him so wasn't the time to ask. I'm sure data will be collected from the poorly patients on which vaccines they received.

Wanttocry · 19/07/2021 08:44

I only know one person who has tested positive (in the whole pandemic) and it was this weekend. He’s early 40s, double vaccinated and has a minor sore throat but basically fine, it was picked up on an LFT and confirmed with PCR.

Oblomov21 · 19/07/2021 08:45

What age groups are only single vaccinated other than very young 18-25 year olds who have only just been offered their first? Everyone else should be double jabbed. I don't know anyone, any adult, who isn't double jabbed.

And I don't have much sympathy for those not taking up the vaccine. Other than for medical reasons. But we know it's largely not for medical reasons.
Eg : wonkeylegs "Vaccine uptake in the area isn't great and the case rate is extremely high. "
Why have they not taken up the vaccine?

Firstbornunicorn · 19/07/2021 08:48

I read an article which suggested that MOST of the people currently dying from COVID are double jabbed, but used some boring statistics to explain why it wasn’t a reason to write the vaccines off.

The gist of it was that it’s mostly over-80s dying and that they have a statistically higher chance than younger people of dying from COVID, even though the vaccine still offers them a lot of protection and reduces their chances of dying by a lot.

Chloemol · 19/07/2021 08:48

Just google it, both vaccinated and unvaccinated are getting it

I’m 29 and had the first vaccine before it was widely opened up to my age group, because my GP surgery was ahead. I had it as soon as it was offered, and that was 8 weeks ago this coming Friday. So I’m not double vaccinated yet (appointment is this Saturday). Plenty of friends my age had theirs as soon as they could book, but are still only 6ish weeks from the first one.
Geamhradh · 19/07/2021 08:50

According to a thread on Saturday (deleted now, I reported it for inconsistencies from the OP) the ICU units are all full of doubly vaccinated young people.
Govt statistics meanwhile show there are 551 people in the UK on ventilators. It doesn't give a breakdown of age or illness.
Cases are rising and you'd expect from a variant which spreads quickly and (by definition) among the young, who, by definition, haven't been vaccinated yet.
This is why most countries have been prioritising the vaccination of teenagers for some months.

I'm 30 and haven't been double jabbed, it only opened up for my age group in mid May so second jab isn't until mid August.
Finzi · 19/07/2021 08:51

A friend of mine and her husband had it a couple of weeks ago. He caught it from a colleague at work; she caught it from him. Both double-jabbed, he had AZ, she had Pfizer. Both had mild cold-like symptoms thankfully, that only lasted a few days.

Firstbornunicorn · 19/07/2021 08:53

@Oblomov21 I’ve spoken to several people I work with (around my age, so late 20s/early 30s), who say they’re just in no rush to be jabbed as they aren’t worried about COVID. A very high number of people I work with think it’s all exaggerated or a hoax. Very few of them stuck to social distancing, even during the first lockdown. Many of them say they don’t know anyone who’s had COVID. There are a few who believe the microchip conspiracy.

I need to leave that job. I took it as a temporary thing while between jobs, but now I’m pregnant so I’m there for the mat pay Wink

I’m 36, booked the vaccine as soon as the NHS site opened up to my age group and had my first jab 8 weeks ago. Having second today but only because I moved it from 12 weeks. Didn’t ‘delay’ at all so I imagine lots of people my age??
lubeybooby · 19/07/2021 08:55

my DD's bf recently had mild symptoms and got a positive PCR - he's double vaccinated with astrazeneca. My DD had prolonged contact with him but seems to have escaped it so far (we are all isolating just in case despite negative LFTs and PCRs) and DD has had just one Pfizer

He has had a very mild case I'm guessing due to vaccination, and we are amazed DD has escaped it. It's been a week now so pretty sure she's unlikely to suddenly get symptoms or positive LFT now. 3 days to go

fanofsun · 19/07/2021 08:55

I find it bizarre when people say they don’t know anyone who has had covid. Perhaps it’s having young kids - but covid is rife in our region. I worry for the teachers etc we’ve had one very sad loss in our school because of covid via the school - a member of staff to it home to their CEV family member.
