Is France headed for Red status?

Government considers putting France on red list as beta variant fears grow

Officials said to be alarmed about prevalence of the strain, which is believed to be significantly higher than levels globally

ByHarry Yorke, WHITEHALL EDITOR
Ministers are considering adding France to the travel red list, The Telegraph has learnt, with officials ordered to conduct a "deep dive" into the data amid mounting concern over the spread of the beta variant.
Senior Whitehall sources said the proposal was discussed at a meeting on Wednesday as part of the review of international travel, which saw the Balearic Islands demoted to the amber list only a fortnight after turning green.
Insiders with knowledge of the discussions said the recommendation to move France from amber to red, requiring all arrivals to undergo hotel quarantine for 10 days, was based on an analysis by the Joint Biosecurity Centre (JBC).
Officials are said to be alarmed about the prevalence of the beta, or South African, variant in the country, which is said to be significantly higher than levels globally.
But others with knowledge of the meeting said there were "mixed opinions" about how to deal with the situation, with ministers agreeing to monitor it closely.
The JBC and the Department for Health have been asked to "interrogate" data coming out of France. A number of meetings are expected to take place in the coming days, with sources signalling on Thursday night that the situation could be discussed at a meeting of the Covid-O Cabinet sub-committee as early as Monday.

How many cases has France had from beta ? Is news to me they were having problems with jt

Hairbrush123 · 15/07/2021 23:19

Didn’t Boris say in the past that France can’t be put on the red list due to political reasons?

SonnetForSpring · 15/07/2021 23:29

Beta??

Homeontherangeuk · 16/07/2021 00:25

@SonnetForSpring

Beta??
Sonic thinking the same, I thought that was a misprint... Never heard of Beta varient😭
RedToothBrush · 16/07/2021 00:44

All arrivals from France will have to isolate in hotels?

That will be fun with the HGV shortage.

And if they are exempt remind me what the fucking point is, if there are fears about a variant which isn't as transmitable as delta... (and isn't worrying France itself who are far more bothered about Delta).

Besides if you wanted a scare story, the Whitty one tonight is much better....

beentoldcomputersaysno · 16/07/2021 01:09

I think it's because AZ doesn't protect very well against it apparently.

MercyBooth · 16/07/2021 01:19

@RedToothBrush The story about Whitty claiming there will be a lockdown in 5 weeks time is a scare story i agree. Apparently he said no such thing. Its so fucking irresponsible for the media to print this. He has already had people assault him. MSM need reining in.

Imfedupwithallofthis · 16/07/2021 01:41

Alpha - aka Kent
Beta - aka South African
Gamma - aka Brazilian
Delta - aka India

Imfedupwithallofthis · 16/07/2021 01:42

That was for @SonnetForSpring and @Homeontherangeuk

Gothichouse40 · 16/07/2021 01:48

Im really confused, I thought Delta was the dominant variant everywhere now?

He was speaking at a conference and said that the doubling time for hospitalisations is 3 weeks so we could soon reach numbers which are unmanageable for the nhs. I think the 5 weeks were the point at which he said we might need to consider more restrictions if things are not peaking then.

notimagain · 16/07/2021 08:10

France hasn’t gone red before due the logistics/supply chain and that is still an issue.

French holiday makers and business people aren’t exactly piling into the UK ATM anyway because of the Amber restrictions, so the groups that would be most effected by UK putting France on the red list would be returning UK residents and /or those essential workers inbound, especially those operating/working as part of the logistics chain….

So if you make France red your choice is to close off your main supply route from Europe…or you have to exempt HGV drivers, ships/train/airline crews…and then as RTB says what’s the point.

RedToothBrush · 16/07/2021 08:14

I get the impression whitty was talking about a worse case scenario and planning rather than things in line with modelling expectations. I also think he's effectively urging caution going into next week.

My understanding is that we are starting to plateau on numbers which is good and seems to be in line with expectations though. The peak was expected the week of 4th August. Restrictions being eased next week could mean that cases do not hit the peak immediately but I remain hopeful that we will be there or thereabouts as behaviour changes won't be significantly different from where we are already (especially given the Euros).

Yes Delta is dominate everywhere now, and the French are far more concerned about that especially in the context of their lower vaccination rate. Beta is of concern to the British Government because they are worried about it evading vaccines and in the context of easing of restrictions, but if there's a lot of cases in France and its a problem we will struggle to keep it out as we need movement of people and goods through France for economic and food reasons.

We will see what the next week brings. What we want to be looking for is a decrease in the rate of increase of cases etc over the next week. We are likely to see a spike associated with last Sunday (5day lag or so) and then things settling down.

At this point I'm more concerned about conflicts arising over the issue of masks and people no longer wanting to wear them. I can see police incidents springing up all over the place.

I think i shall be avoiding busy places for that reason alone!

I dunno, it's all Greek to me.
Roseau18 · 16/07/2021 09:01

It doesn't make any sense.
The Bêta variant représente 11% of cases in France (having dropped from 20% à week ago) while the Delta accounts for 67.5% and is rising rapidly (40% on July 2nd).

@Roseau18

It doesn't make any sense.

Looking at the relative figures I’m confused as well but it might make sense to some UK politicians and their friends in the media:

“Never mind the confusion over what UK voters are or are not meant to do on the 19th, we’re considering putting that lot over there on the Red list”

PersephoneJames · 16/07/2021 09:31

This makes me so angry.

In Europe people are going on holiday in each other’s countries and seeing family as usual. There are some countries asking for pcr tests or advising citizens not to travel.

The uk has gone full on batshit on travel.

Roseau18 · 16/07/2021 12:57

I have lived and worked in France for over 20 years bu all my family are in the UK. I am double vaccinated but can't go to the UK without 10 days quarantine on arrival because I was vaccinated in France whereas UK résidents vaccinated in the UK can come to France and don't have to self-isolate when they get back. That makes no sensé either.

Yep. I will be livid if they do this.

Why is it £90 min for a PCR test that they don't even check when it's free in most other countries??!

Why do they pass a law (amber list vaccine exemption) which they know is going to lead to a surge in bookings, only to then throw everything under the bus.

I'm naively hoping that this legal challenge put in by the travel industry is going to provide some sort of push back on these ridiculous restrictions that are only serving to put travel back to where it was in the 80s!

EasterIssland · 16/07/2021 20:55

France is now in amber plus. So even vaccinated people have to self isolate
