Good.

@SonnetForSpring

I think many shops will ask for masks as otherwise they will find less shoppers visiting.
not at all....footfall has massively increased for us throughout covid, busier than ever

since the euros/july mask wearing has reduced to roughly 50/50

UndercoverToad · 15/07/2021 14:37

@gardeninggirl68 is that something to be proud of? Reduced mask wearing?

You concurred with a poster who said my comment was utter shite - so I was responding to that.

What I don’t really understand about this debate is how CEV people could feel safe in a shop if everyone is wearing a mask but unsafe if they are not when rates are so high. Masks might slightly reduce the risk of transmission in that scenario but there is still a significant risk of catching covid if you are out and about at the moment regardless of whether people are wearing a mask. If you absolutely cannot afford to catch covid indoor public places are not currently safe. For most people the risk of getting seriously ill from covid is now very low due to vaccines or age but if for some reason the vaccine doesn’t work or you can’t have it but are vulnerable cloth masks are really unlikely to be the difference between being “safe” or not. Local rates seems a much better indicator of safety.

I also don’t really understand the comments about masks preventing rates spiralling and long covid. Rates are spiralling with a mask mandate in place. There is no reason to think that rates will rise to a lower peak with masks than without them. It may be a slower increase in case numbers with masks but there’s little evidence of that either. And people not wearing masks in supermarkets is highly unlikely to cause a major spike in cases in children and therefore long covid - children are much more likely to catch it in school and it’s highly likely that most children will catch it at some point anyway regardless of masks because most of them won’t be vaccinated soon.

It’s now estimated that 27% of the population have had covid and rates have increased every time we come out of lockdown despite masks which suggests to me that people are really overestimating the positive impact of masks in shops.

Whereabouts are you? I keep reading on Mumsnet comments from people saying mask wearing has really dropped, and I don’t disbelieve them but where I live I can count on one hand the number of people I’ve seen inside without a mask since they were introduced. Strange how it varies. I’m in a large town in the SE.

AndytheUnicorn · 15/07/2021 14:38

@UndercoverToad

Your posts are reminding me of the woman on the bus the other day when I took my mask of and she glared at me the whole time. I'd taken it off to use my inhaler as I was feeling very asthmatic. She continued to glare at me as I puffed my inhaler and until my mask was back on my face (with the occasional glare after). I gave her my middle finger :)

Ginandfantalemon · 15/07/2021 14:38

So in Scotland legally I cant pop into an 'uncrowded' shop for 2 minutes, perhaps even be the only one in, without a mask, yet if I die tomorrow, 200 people can come to my funeral wearing flimsy paper masks from Homebargains. But seemingly these are the people who will save the world and I am the uncaring dangerous one to be avoided and should be ashamed.

SparrowNest · 15/07/2021 14:42

I’m keen to get back to normal but I don’t see an issue with this.

SparrowNest · 15/07/2021 14:43

I live in SE London and if I walk 5 minutes in one direction from my house basically nobody bothers with them in shops etc - staff or customers. 5 mins in the other (posher) direction and people are still wearing them.

no i didnt....i said i would also like to see a link for your claims, as did others.....never said anything was 'utter shut '...

reduced mask wearing? proud of? no idea....its an observation from working in a busy retail environment all day long

i'm sure if i was lying other retail workers could jump in and say so though...

UndercoverToad · 15/07/2021 14:43

@AndytheUnicorn oh come on, I’m not THAT bad. I’m just very pro masks. The only time I’ve glared is when a group of 20 year olds, unmasked surrounded me at the till when I was trying to buy items for my mum who is incontinent. She’s had a large section of bowel removed so if she caught it now, she’d be a gonner.

i'm 40 mins outside North London.

but do you follow those people around and watch their behaviour? we see them wear it to walk in past the person on our door, once inside its straight under the chin

or if they want to speak to us its comical, they move closer, pull down the mask and show us something on their phone they are looking for.
@bumbleymummy and if you are going to ‘lump under an umbrella’ my school age DD has been thriving, had an outstanding end of year reports and has learnt a great deal of compassion over the past year. So perhaps you are ‘assuming’ to fit your rhetoric. Her mental health has certainly not suffered.
Well if she doesn’t have mental health problems then why would she be under that umbrella? The problem with the current definition of long COVID is that it includes people with mild, lingering symptoms for 4 weeks with those who have longer term, more severe consequences.

AndytheUnicorn · 15/07/2021 14:53

@UndercoverToad it's the way your coming across and I'm sick of seeing it from people. Tone it down a bit with the capitals ect. Everyone has a view and an opinion, some people are just getting way to self righteous with it. I wear a mask and am carrying on for my own reasons but I've had family abused for being unable to wear one and it does my head in.

olivethegreat · 15/07/2021 14:57

Got back earlier from mini Tesco's which is a stop for builders getting lunch and not one of the 20 somethings amongst them was wearing a mask. Older guys were .

Not sure I see the point if the people wearing them are going to be the middle aged and older folk who are all double jabbed and less likely to be night clubbing!

MercyBooth · 15/07/2021 14:58

YY @gardeninggirl68 The bullying middle class champagne socialists who pop into Waitrose in a mask for 20 minutes have no idea what its like to work a shift in one.

I think this will backfire hugely. Ive already had several "whats the point of the vaccine" conversations with people.

UndercoverToad · 15/07/2021 15:02

@AndytheUnicorn only when I’m attacked. I’m not going to take an attack lying down. And I’m within the rules/regulations of Mumsnet - so it’s not really up to you what I type 👍

@bumbleymummy you said ‘millions’ which is very subjective. Who are these millions / and if you are trying to minimise long Covid, why can’t I minimise what you are trying to imply??

@gardeninggirl68 tbh your personal comfort doesn’t really mean much to me when compared with a spiralling infection rate and 33000 children suffering long Covid in the UK

The leftie mask finally slips. nudge nudge

bumbleymummy · 15/07/2021 15:07

Yes, there are millions of children in the U.K. @UndercoverToad - all of them missed out on over a year of their normal childhood due to lockdowns and restrictions.

UndercoverToad · 15/07/2021 15:07

@MercyBooth how are things with EON?

OP posts:
BlueRabbit7 · 15/07/2021 15:12

My worry with this policy is that a significant number will continue to wear a mask as opposed to getting the vaccine.

Exactly this, it is worn as a mask of superiority.

There is a very very significant class divide in the wearing and not wearing of a mask in my opinion.

AndytheUnicorn · 15/07/2021 15:13

@UndercoverToad who’s attacking you? Your like a lot of these people obsessed with masks, unable to see the whole picture, always spoiling for a fight and self-righteous.

I shall leave you to your thread Smile

Really hoping other shops follow - I know it's hard to enforce but will encourage more people to continue wearing masks. People have a right to feel safe at work, and mask wearing is one thing we and customer service assistants can do to protect eachother. Have to admit, I didn't fancy standing in a queue, with someone breathing closely down my neck which is what's going to happen if distancing and masks go.
