False positives?

I am looking for some hope really! Our childcare has had a positive lateral flow and is waiting for a PCR. Taking 10 days off work is going to cause major issues so I'm hoping it is a false positive. Does anyone have any experience of positive LFT and then a negative PCR?

Yes, I know if two young children who have had positive LFTs and negative PCRs.

Yes I know of someone who's kid also had positive lateral flow then negative pcr. They were told the lateral flow was a false positive and he just had a cold

TiddleTaddleTat · 13/07/2021 12:30

I think it's fairly unlikely though. Need to repeat tests and perhaps seek further advice.

Lemonmelonsun · 13/07/2021 12:31

Agree it's fairly unlikely, it could be to do with what they ate?
I've been at a huge site in the past doing lat flow and not a single positive.

kirinm · 13/07/2021 12:42

I think I know it's going to be positive just trying to kid myself. Arrrrgh.

We had a positive lft followed by a negative pcr.

Followed by negative lft.

I work in a school. We've had about 10 LF tests that have shown positive but the PCR has come back negative 24 hours later. The next LF tests have all been negative.

My dd (14) had a positive lateral flow followed by a negative PCR back in June so it does happen.

Thanks for the hope!!

On the other hand ds2 had 2 negative lfts (testing as bubble burst). Given all clear to return to school next day. Next day randomly did a test as a bit snuffly/ mild cough and positive...(lft and pcr)

I really hope my daughter hasn't caught it as she has literally just got over a horrible virus that saw her hospitalised twice.

False positives are pretty rare. However, false negatives with PCRs are fairly common, so there's a reasonable chance of having a true positive LFT followed by a false negative PCR.

She's had another positive lateral flow so I think we know where this is headed 😭
