Isn't the passport thing discriminatory on age?

Cooldryplace · 13/07/2021 09:27

My two adult DC are due to have their 2nd vaccine at the end of this month, but they had the first much earlier than their age group because of caring responsibilities.

Many of their friends are just having their first now. Which means that whilst large sections of the population can merrily go about their business, once the rules re isolation change on 16 Aug, these young people continue to face repeated periods of isolation, often meaning leave from work on SSP.

Is this really OK?

Totally agree, but I also think it’s to try and stop the younger adults going and doing everything. My 2 adult DS have had their first vaccine and have their second ones booked mid August. My 25 year old has been out quite a lot since first vaccine and I’m sure he will be going back to nightclubs as soon as he can. This time last year, he was adamant that he didn’t need to be vaccinated, thankfully he got it as soon as he could.

landofgiants · 13/07/2021 12:42

Yes, I agree with you. It isn't fair.

Iggly · 13/07/2021 12:43

I completely agree.

It demonstrates the tunnel vision of our government. Most of them are in the vaccinated bracket so they can’t imagine what it is like for other who aren’t.

Shapesorted · 13/07/2021 12:46

My ds turns 18 in the Autumn so he will go from not having to isolate (under 18) and then after his birthday back to isolating until the second jab. Nuts!

Pepsi9090 · 13/07/2021 12:49

It is completely unfair.

Young people shat on again, and we'll be the ones paying for it for generations to come.

AllTheCakes · 13/07/2021 12:51

I agree it’s discriminatory. Young people haven’t had a chance to be double vaccinated yet.

GolfEchoRomeoTangoIndia · 13/07/2021 12:53

Just because something discriminates on grounds of age doesn’t mean it’s unlawful or unreasonable if it’s a proportionate way of achieving a legitimate aim.

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 13/07/2021 12:53

Yep vile and unfair- worse when you factor how much the young gave up to protect the elderly who can now fuck off on holiday

Muststopeating · 13/07/2021 12:54

I agree, its not fair that they suffer anymore BUT I'm also fairly sure that a huge part of all this is to incentivise people to have both vaccines. The young will be the most reluctant but also the most enticed by these extra measures.

newnortherner111 · 13/07/2021 12:54

It would hardly be an issue if we had a competent government, because infection levels would be much lower. There should all along have been proper financial support for those required to isolate, so that everyone would have done so when required.

newnortherner111 · 13/07/2021 12:55

@OnlyFoolsnMothers some of the young, as others have not paid much adherence to rules and guidance. The only people without face coverings I have seen on trains and buses were young people.

anothernamereally · 13/07/2021 12:56

According to dd secondary the new rules for under 18's are valid until 4 months after their birthday to allow them time to get vaccinated- I'm off to work but I'll try and do a link later

KylieKoKo · 13/07/2021 12:58

It's unfair. On the other hand, you could argue that it's unfair to expect vaccinated people to carry on as if they aren't vaccinated, often at great financial cost - remember a lot of people don't get paid when they isolate.

I don't think either way is fair to be honest.

I think the best thing would be to ensure that everyone who wants a second dose has had one by the time this rule comes in but I am not sure that is viable.

Think it’s fair- you shut down businesses, schools, unis when the people who needed them open were low risk!

I see a mix of ages when it comes to mask flouting

16th August is still 5 weeks away and vaccine booking has been open to everyone over 18 for about 3 weeks now. As the gap between first and second vaccines is now 8 weeks, anyone who booked their first vaccine quickly after they became eligible should be fully vaccinated on or very soon after the 16th. Obviously lots are only just now having their first vaccinations but that's up to them for not booking in earlier. There hasn't really been any shortage of appointments and walk in clinics recently.

How do you know? I’m willing to bet it’s based on your experiences and those of people you know. A drop in the ocean.

I had my first vaccine at the end of may. When I was invited, there were few spaces. I haven’t been invited for my second and there are no slots available for my second yet.

Tommika · 13/07/2021 13:14

It’s not discriminatory due to age, the reasoning that effects younger people is based on medical risk.

@Cooldryplace - you’ve highlighted that it isn’t age related by noting that your two have had their first vaccine and will get their second vaccine ahead of others in their age group due to their caring responsibilities and risk.

If you look at the passport info it says you can use 2 vaccines (+2 weeks) a positive test (+ 14 days) in last 6 months or a recent negative test (last 72 hours) including lateral flow on the door

motogogo · 13/07/2021 13:30

Remember many young people are double jabbed due to group 6 eligibility, job, vulnerable family or queuing for leftovers. University medical centre vaccinated all students who came forward in early May here.

Kazzyhoward · 13/07/2021 13:31

Lots of things ARE discrimatory on age, but are perfectly sensible and allowed by law, such as age of consent, retirement age, Saga holidays, age to legally drink alcohol, age to legally drive, etc etc. The key determinant is whether there's a legitimate reason for age discrimination. If there's a good reason, it's allowed, if there's no good reason, it's illegal discrimination.

Mpsister · 13/07/2021 13:32

How would you have structured the vaccination programme to avoid this?

ParkingFeud · 13/07/2021 13:43

If it's ok to discrimate by age I think all young people should have been allowed to carry on as normal for the last year. Very few of us are likely to need to be hospitalised. We could have kept jobs, education and livelihoods.

Now we just sit at home (if we have one, house prices and rental market have gone insane) and watch old people swan off on holiday.

I'm so angry.
