[England] People ‘expected’ to wear face masks in enclosed public spaces after 19 July

New guidance will be issued by the government telling the public they are “expected” to wearface coveringsin indoor enclosed places, the vaccines minister has said.

Nadhim Zahawialso said he was “confident” the government would ease almost all legal restrictions on 19 July — despite surging cases of the virus and concerns expressed by scientists.

Speaking onSky News, he said: “It’s important we remain cautious and careful. The guidelines that we’ll set out tomorrow will demonstrate that, including guidelines that people are expected to wear a mask in indoor enclosed spaces, and of course remain vigilant.”

While the guidance will not be legally binding, his remarks appear to be a shift in stance fromBoris Johnson’s comments just last week, whosaid people “might choose” to follow the guidancein areas where cases are on the rise and in enclosed spaces, such as public transport at peak hours.

@HesterShaw1

Worry not. I get you are terrified about the impact on the immune system, but no need to be terrified. You can still access germs in those places you name such as "outside on beaches, on cliff paths and on uncrowded streets" where there's never once been an expectation to wear a mask or other face covering.

You really are silly.

Yep, it's a combination of the lack of oxygen going to my brain from wearing a mask, and being too terrified to leave the house.

Oh no more covid. I clicked thinking it was about football , oh well. Covid, covid covid
Did the topic and title not give it away?

Or was it just the [England] part ;

Wanttocry · 11/07/2021 13:47

I wonder if Rishi Sunak’s next budget will be “no tax rises but people are expected to contribute more. Here are the bank details.”

It's in the Covid section.

Thanks for taking the time out of your fun-packed Big Day to contribute 👍

I'm so wearied by this. They realised people were squealing hysterically about masks being voluntary and that these voices were squealing more loudly than the people who were relieved about the end of compulsory and pointless mask wearing. And they U turned. But wait! It's not an actual U turn because they used the word "expected".

No one has ever been able to explain satisfactorily why masks work if rates plummeted last spring before we had to wear them, and then started increasing when compulsory mask wearing was brought it. It's almost... gasp ....as though they make no discernible difference.

This.
Ooodlesofboodles · 11/07/2021 13:48

I don't think the government have the first clue what they are doing, its a complete shambles. Anyway I wish they would keep wfh and masks until the pandemic is over. My company is wholly online and it is not essential to be in the office. And I say that as someone who is desperate to get back into the office as I hate wfh. I just don't think it is sensible right now.

CarpeVitam · 11/07/2021 13:49

@LindaEllen

The way I see it, either masks are important and will save lives, or they're not. This virus is either still a major problem, or it's not.

If it's not, by all means drop restrictions, and let's live normally again.

But if it IS a problem, then fuck me, get a fucking backbone and leave the rules in place. Yes, people need normality, but that will come. What they need RIGHT now is open, honest and scientific governance to best see us to the end of this shit show.

This!

Chris Whitty said he would still be wearing a mask in a number of scenarios

swimlyn · 11/07/2021 14:22

I have always felt from Day One of this breaking out that anyone coming near to you without a mask, or not wearing their mask correctly, is saying to you: “I do not care at all about you, your family, your friends; you can die or be disabled and I don’t care”.

Also, of course, they’re saying the same about their own family etc.

I’ve reassessed a lot of neighbours, acquaintanceships and friendships over this. 80% have gone now. They don’t care about me, so…

WouldBeGood · 11/07/2021 14:24

But @swimlyn realistically even if you get Covid you are highly unlikely to die or become disabled.

This hyperbole needs to stop.

I genuinely do not get why the hysteria.

I would imagine that like most scientists he is very risk averse. I also imagine he won’t be going to many nightclubs or festivals. Wearing a mask isn’t much of a problem if you pop to Waitrose once a week.
WouldBeGood · 11/07/2021 14:33

Now imagining whitty in a nightclub 😂

herecomesthsun · 11/07/2021 14:34

I don't think scientists are necessarily risk averse. Science is just a way of acquiring knowledge. Scientists are, by definition really, interested in knowledge and trying to be impartial, as far as they/we/one can be.

The scientific approach is the one best informed by the best knowledge, again by definition really.

I'm picturing him at a festival, bouncing around a field off his nut on ket 🤣

Some people not wearing masks are disabled or living with often debilitating health conditions. To suggest we don't care is simply an outrageous lie.

I really hope you've not ditched friends who fall into this category for their inability to wear masks.

Honestly that’s a ridiculous and quite frankly hysterical comment. No because so many have tested positive and have been absolutely fine , most are double vaccinated . We endured long lockdowns missed occasions/ family / kids missing school / operations cancelled people mental health suffered all because of a virus that may or may not make you ill if perfectly well . I’m sorry but I’m not prepared to wear a mask until zero Covid . We have done all this to protect the vulnerable and you think people that wear masks are selfish. I’m sorry but you are sooo wrong .
EverythingWillFallInLine · 11/07/2021 14:39

"Next jaegerbomb please."

Bollocks!

Just looking after my family and other contacts.

Hysteria? Grow up Hun! Grin

WouldBeGood · 11/07/2021 14:42

See, this is why the fear campaign needs to stop. That attitude is completely irrational. It’s a shame really.

DumplingsAndStew · 11/07/2021 14:45

Complains about posters using hyperbole...

...Calls posters "hysterical" for wearing masks. 😂😂😂

Was on the tube in London this weekend and about 80-90% of adults were wearing masks, though some admittedly had them on under their noses. People are clearly willing to do it in those enclosed spaces, if encouraged to.

It is a shame people are feeling the need to do what they can to protect their loved ones, but you don't have to be scared of that. You just do you.

You need to read every word, not just the ones that suit your cause.

Of course I know the ones who have issues.

Honestly that’s a ridiculous and quite frankly hysterical comment. No because so many have tested positive and have been absolutely fine , most are double vaccinated . Yadda, yadda, hysteria, hysteria.

Perhaps read every word?
