[England] People ‘expected’ to wear face masks in enclosed public spaces after 19 July

New guidance will be issued by the government telling the public they are “expected” to wearface coveringsin indoor enclosed places, the vaccines minister has said.

Nadhim Zahawialso said he was “confident” the government would ease almost all legal restrictions on 19 July — despite surging cases of the virus and concerns expressed by scientists.

Speaking onSky News, he said: “It’s important we remain cautious and careful. The guidelines that we’ll set out tomorrow will demonstrate that, including guidelines that people are expected to wear a mask in indoor enclosed spaces, and of course remain vigilant.”

While the guidance will not be legally binding, his remarks appear to be a shift in stance fromBoris Johnson’s comments just last week, whosaid people “might choose” to follow the guidancein areas where cases are on the rise and in enclosed spaces, such as public transport at peak hours.

I think those who are skeptical about masks should ask their surgeons "not to bother" next time they require surgery of any kind.

After all, of they are useless...

Masked ventilation in ICU will be a tricky dilemma for the anti masks too. I hope they finally see sense eventually through their mask phobia basically also telling others it’s cool to be reckless despite fatalities and long Covid disabilities amongst the least health privileged.

See, I get why in that setting it is advantageous to wear a mask.

Wife and I popped out for an Indian meal on Thursday evening. We had to wear a mask from the front door to our table - about 5 metres. Obviously once sat down we didn’t have to wear a mask…

There was one other couple in the restaurant. After 15 minutes or so a group of four came in. Same pointless mask charade for a few seconds.

It’s bonkers.

Stuffin · 11/07/2021 14:59

I won't be wearing a mask on the 19th.

Any business that mandates it will just be avoided. Really if pubs, restaurants or shops want to keep restrictions including masks then fine as I am sure there will be enough that don't.

TheVampiresWife · 11/07/2021 15:01

@swimlyn so you know the medical record of everyone you meet who's maskless? That's quite a talent!

paddyk · 11/07/2021 15:05

If it's made a legal requirement to wear one then I will, otherwise I won't be.
It's that simple.

DumplingsAndStew · 11/07/2021 15:07

@MarshaBradyo

You just do you.

I think that’s what people wanted and thought would happen on 19th

😂😩

What a silly comment.

Do you not know anything about your friends?

Or are you only interested in yourself?

WouldBeGood · 11/07/2021 15:16

As it happens, studies into masks for surgeons do not unequivocally show they do anything 🤷🏻‍♀️

And I can’t believe we’re back to the stupid ventilator comments.

WouldBeGood · 11/07/2021 15:17

here’s one article in case I’m accused of making this up

swimlyn · 11/07/2021 15:22

Why be so binary on matters like this?

“It’s black and white.” “You’re with us or agin us.”

It’s not as simple as that.

People being careful? Sod that!

So, do you not look before crossing the road?

Wash your hands before preparing food?

Seeing many many threads like this here and elsewhere makes you realise exactly how Britain has signed up for another Thatcherite period of ‘haves’ and ‘have nots’.

PrincessKaguya · 11/07/2021 15:35

If you ever :
Smoke
Eat Meat
Drive a car
Travel by plane
Use single use plastic or buy clothes made from non-recyclable materials
You have no right to judge others and call them selfish for not wearing mask, because you also directly or indirectly contribute towards someone else's death or health problems.
Btw, thankfully the views expressed on mumsnet aren't shared by majority of population, so no need to worry.

Arrowheart · 11/07/2021 15:36

The government can expect me to wear a mask in the same way I can expect them not to be a bunch of incompetent liars...

TerritorialPissings · 11/07/2021 15:42

I just read on the BBC that the encouragement of mask wearing is not based on any solid data that it helps prevent spread infection, but that it makes people remember that we’re in a pandemic situation…keeps them mindful. Unbelievable!!

I’ll not be wearing one after the 19th if it is not legally enforceable.

Againstmachine · 11/07/2021 15:42

Sorry while I stop laughing, you do realise a surgical mask in a sterile temperature and a air controlled environment whilst people are having there insides opened up is same as someone popping into the pub or Tesco's.

TheVampiresWife · 11/07/2021 15:46

@swimlyn

You said

I have always felt from Day One of this breaking out that anyone coming near to you without a mask, or not wearing their mask correctly, is saying to you: “I do not care at all about you, your family, your friends; you can die or be disabled and I don’t care”

I'm referring to the part where you stated anyone coming near to you without a mask and went on to say how they didn't care.

And my response was, some of those people will be disabled/have health conditions already.

You cannot claim to know the medical history of strangers, whatever you think you know about your friends (many people do not divulge their health conditions to even those they're closest to, as is their right).

Best not to make sweeping judgements and assumptions, really. Whether friends or strangers.

Peoniesandpeaches · 11/07/2021 16:05

@LucilleTheVampireBat

"Covid performance theatre" is a ridiculous phrase and I look forward to never hearing that again

Nothing ridiculous about it. It perfectly describes these ridiculous measures.
If you want to talk about phrases to never hear again then I'd suggest "selfish".

I’m afraid that the word selfish is likely to follow you beyond this pandemic.

Yes because obviously surgery is the same as the supermarket. So similar infact that I'll pop to the nearest operating theatre next time I run out of beans.
luckylavender · 11/07/2021 16:15

@gardeninggirl68 - you will if your company says you have to

luckylavender · 11/07/2021 16:17

@LightAsTheBreeze - shop workers have no choice though

luckylavender · 11/07/2021 16:29

@HesterShaw1 - it's precisely because of people like you that the government's stance is reckless. Arrogant people who know best & who sneer at people wearing masks and where they're wearing masks. People who have no impact on you whatsoever. And yet there you are judging and ridiculing.

Againstmachine · 11/07/2021 16:45

it's precisely because of people like you that the government's stance is reckless.

Utter rubbish and to blame others for decisions the government makes really, I don't think the government have listened to anyone during this.

Stuffin · 11/07/2021 16:52

I have been to a restaurant today and put on my mask to walk to a table.

Sat and chatted and breathed for almost 2 hours at a table but by putting on my mask to walk in and out I am sure everyone was 'safe'.

Utter stupid rules and will be glad to see the back of them.
