Yes or no? I feel a u turn coming on as it seems the majority of public are not happy to lift all restrictions according to government polling.

So wondering what you think?

I think they will. I think they want to get it out there in the community now and have people catch it so we reach herd immunity quicker and before the autumn/winter. There is method in the madness I reckon - we'll see 🤷‍♀️

worktrip · 10/07/2021 09:55

Yes, but they will need to be put in place again come September.
They will again say masks in crowded places, transport etc. Distancing, reducing numbers and WFH will be back by November.

AlexaShutUp · 10/07/2021 09:57

I hope that the government will be cautious but I'm not confident that they will. We have a lot of freedom at the moment. It really wouldn't hurt to keep some restrictions in place for just a bit longer.

starfro · 10/07/2021 09:57

Yes.

As Chris Whitty has said, now is the best time to do it.

Watapalava · 10/07/2021 09:59

yes and they wont go back - they've said its irreversible plus by sept all adults will be double vaccinated so why would they need them? 30,000 deaths for example would be acceptable - it is for flu so covid will be too

Well, not all adults will be double vaccinated, as some people are refusing to get the jabs. Plus the vaccine won't work on some of the most vulnerable.

It's easy for the government to say that it's irreversible but the reality is that none of us actually know. They might have to reverse it if we get a new vaccine-resistant variant.

AlexaShutUp · 10/07/2021 10:07

Out of interest, would all those who agree with this policy be happy for us to scrap all child- related benefits? On the basis that people shouldn't have children that they can't afford? So no CB, no CTC, no subsidised childcare etc for any children? Because that's surely the logical conclusion of your argument?

Wouldn't make any difference to me, as I don't qualify for CB etc anyway, but I imagine that at least some of those squawking about people supporting their own children would be annoyed if these benefits were removed.

FindingMeno · 10/07/2021 10:08

Yes, it'll go ahead.
Yes, it's a very bad decision.

tappitytaptap · 10/07/2021 10:09

@AlexaShutUp not sure I’m following your argument…?? I don’t get child benefit anymore so no skin in the game but don’t understand what this has to do with removing restrictions?

Spekoppar · 10/07/2021 10:10

Yes, but I would rather they rowed back on a few whilst cases are rising at this rate, masks, some distancing measures etc. Johnson won’t though, he wants his Big Bang freedom day headlines.

Suspect we will see some measures back by the Autumn, under a different name to save face.

Are you on the right thread, no-one has mentioned children, apologies if you are.
Watapalava · 10/07/2021 10:12

alexa
Those refusing vaccine? well tough shit - we can restrict to protect them and gov have thankfully stated that as fact

For those it doesn't work against, they'd equally be vulnerable against other viruses etc and so i suggest they restrict their activities.

Quaratining healthy people is ridiculous and would never happen again - no one in real world is following the rules. Thank god Hancock went and was replaced with someone who hates lockdowns.

Let it spread now - people aren't even trying to avoid it

Not because they 'dont get it' - more because they do get it! They get that they were never at risk in first place.

Watapalava · 10/07/2021 10:13

cant

Topseyt · 10/07/2021 10:13

Yes, I hope so. They've u-turned before though, but they have set themselves up for a bigger fall and more egg on their faces if they do that this time.

Masks need to disappear except in places like medical settings.

VikingVolva · 10/07/2021 10:16

Yes, I think they know they are flying in the face of what the public think is sensible (SD maintained on public transport and in some other essential places) but are so firmly fixed on the decision to have a massive public health experiment during the summer that nothing will knock it off course.

Shit for the most vulnerable, who may rightly feel that indoors places and public transport are not covid secure and so must be avoided. Shit for us all if the gamble does not pay off.

There are enough vocal people around to make it seem that the decision is sufficiently popularist

AlexaShutUp · 10/07/2021 10:19

Nope, wrong thread. Blush Sorry!

memberofthewedding · 10/07/2021 10:24

Regardless of whether they are or not I am going to treat them as if they are lifted,

Delatron · 10/07/2021 10:30

Yes because they want this wave out of the way now. They do not want to push it in to autumn. They want us to peak naturally in August.

LightAsTheBreeze · 10/07/2021 10:30

Yes, even Prof. pantsdown seemed to be saying it was the right time on BBC this morning

Wilkolampshade · 10/07/2021 10:34

Yes. Yes they will.

ArianaG · 10/07/2021 10:34

If it doesn't happen now, when do people think it will? Is this literally it for ever?
In and out of lockdowns/restrictions on a permanent basis?

JellyBabiesFan · 10/07/2021 10:34

Both the vaccinated and unvaccinated are getting ill from this but we need to trust the vaccines to prevent most of the death and severe illness. We cannot continue with the restrictions forever and it makes more sense to rip off the plaster in the summer and not wait for winter.

Yes some people cannot have the vaccine but we have reached a point where we cannot keep the vast majority of the population held under these restrictions.

Yes it is going to be an experiment but there is no other viable exit strategy.

Mintjulia · 10/07/2021 10:35

Yes. 85% of adults have had first jab in the U.K. Most are booked for their second. Schools are off from then so fewer infections via school.

If they don't drop restrictions now, then when?

Plus better to have covid peak in August than in winter

LemonRoses · 10/07/2021 10:40

Sadly yes. Against all advice and not following the data but Johnson is bored of being Churchill to the Coronavirus war.

Delatron · 10/07/2021 10:42

When would be a good time to lift restrictions then if not now? Winter? Next year?!
