How long for home PCR test results?

Most of the info I can find is for tests done at a test centre, has anyone done a home test recently? How long did the results take? I posted it back around 5pm this afternoon, is Sunday realistic?

Usually I'd say yes but I'm hearing lots of stories of people waiting over 3 days at the moment.

Loshad · 09/07/2021 21:05

I posted a test just before last pick up at 5:30 ( in one of those “special “ boxes, I had the result back within 24 hh

Jaffacakeinmypocket · 10/07/2021 06:43

I posted mine Monday afternoon and only got the result at 4.30am this morning!

Missypuff30 · 10/07/2021 08:24

Posted mine Thursday afternoon, still waiting.

Took it because ZOE app asked me (cold symptoms), so I don't have to isolate but conscious that I could be spreading covid around!

OceanSounds123 · 10/07/2021 09:39

I posted on Monday afternoon and result came back Friday afternoon.

MagicalTurnip · 10/07/2021 11:23

Posted ours Tuesday and still waiting for results (119 said they might be lost but didn't seem to be overly confident in that).

Wanttocry · 10/07/2021 13:35

Thanks, seems a bit varied then. I’ve got my fingers crossed it comes back before Monday.

I posted mine at 6am this morning, and you can track the progress of it on the government website in Wales. You need the barcode number and the Royal Mail tracking number. I've been told 72 hours.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 10/07/2021 16:11

I’ve been doing them weekly as I’m DM’s named person in her care home. To start with they were taking less than 24 hours from going in the post box. Last week’s took 72 hours.

I don’t think we can track them in England beyond delivery to the lab.

Wanttocry · 11/07/2021 08:07

Got it back this morning, around 36 hours after posting. Thankfully negative.

Oh good news OP. Thanks for the update too.

Missypuff30 · 11/07/2021 08:27

Got mine 1am this morning, so about 54 hours. Negative thankfully so I haven't been infecting people (Zoe app asked me to test, so didn't need to isolate)

This is interesting as I'm traveling to the UK next month and will need a day 5 test to release. But sounds like we may be stuck for days waiting for the result. Is there a way to avoid the post?

I think the 5 day test and release requires paying for a private test? I’d guess you can pay more for speedier results?

@filka timing is everything. When my husband paid for the day 5 test to release we didn’t factor in that day 5 was a Saturday and he didn’t get his results until Tues Eve only just before the day 8. He was v pissed off he effectively wasted his money for gaining an extra 24 hours

filka · 11/07/2021 09:14

@Hermie12 I haven't booked flights yet, so that's a useful tip.

@WanttocrySorry, didn't mean to hijack the thread...

OK. Brearthing deeply here and looking for some guidance.

DD tested +ve on lft Thursday lunchtime, I left work (school), we booked pcr tests, DD as confirmation of lft, me as close contact as advised in our area. Website had the wrong hours for our local testing centre, so they were handing out home tests instead.

Tests posted Thursday afternoon, Royal mail confirms delivered on Thursday.

DD now has symptoms completely consistent with delta variant.

No results yet.

If DD is +ve, nothing much changes - we're isolating, end of story, someone else takes my class. If I am positive, then I take out a full class at school and teach online for the next week. I teach KS2, so everyone will need an adult at home with them if self isolating.

Would it be reasonable for me to call 119 tonight to chase up, given that this affects over 30 families one way or another? Or will they laugh at me because it's so busy?

cantkeepawayforever · 11/07/2021 10:49

(Oh, and because we didn't request the tests, but were given them we didn't have a reference number and instead had to do a convoluted registration via the NHS website. i think that's what's worrying me the most - the chance that the tests have been processed but because of the unusual registration process they haven't been linked with our names for results purposes)
