What's happening in China now?

Just curious if anyone has any knowledge... I see they have barely any cases or deaths anymore.
With such a huge population how's this achievable? Or are their figures just not reported?

OP posts:
SonnetForSpring · 08/07/2021 22:59

They are having another surge.

Charley198 · 08/07/2021 23:01

From what I see the whole country only reported 17 new cases today

OP posts:
SonnetForSpring · 08/07/2021 23:04

I mean in their terms which is only about 60 people a day. Not 30k.

SonnetForSpring · 08/07/2021 23:05

Some are probably not reported but they also take the rules very very very seriously.

ReadingTeaLeaves · 08/07/2021 23:10

There's a lockdown in an area in the south west of the country just now, near the Burmese border I think, because of a few dozen cases. Beijing and Shanghai operating completely basically normally (and have been for many months).

www.ft.com/content/82574e3d-1633-48ad-8afb-71ebb3fe3dee This is an interesting read about China's underreported cases

NannyAndJohn · 09/07/2021 01:37

We haven't heard a peep from China for an entire year because their government has actually managed to control Covid.

Kokeshi123 · 09/07/2021 01:48

China is not going to be in an easy situation long-term though. They can't keep borders shut forever. They have publically nailed their colors to the We Will Not Tolerate A Single Case Ever mast and have trained their population to panic over a single case (meaning that no spread of the virus can ever be tolerated without losing face). And their sino crap vaccines don't appear to work well enough to achieve herd immunity, even if the takeup is high (I mean, the sino vaccines work well enough by MY standards, but not well enough if you are really fixated on zero COVID forever). At some point China is going to have to climb down, admit its vaccines aren't great, and start buying more high-performing vaccines from overseas. The CCP hates doing that kind of thing.

My nephew teaches English in China. Where he is, life is entirely normal, except entering he had to quarantine for 4 weeks.

Earlydancing · 09/07/2021 01:58

The thing is with China that the country is so huge that if you can shut down a region with say 67 million people, putting them under virtual house arrest, they won't complain and you've still got another 1.3 billion to carry on keeping the economy going.

🤣🤣🤣

I think it might be they are hoping the world forgets where all this shit started

dementedma · 09/07/2021 08:21

My brother lives and works out there. Lockdown during the first wave was brutally enforced, no exemptions. Today everything is back to normal and he quite happily goes out and about, to restaurants etc.

Bythemillpond · 09/07/2021 08:23

China is a huge place with restricted communications

How would he know everywhere is back to normal. From the actual news we get there are places where it isn’t and they are going into lockdowns again.

Apparently they are using the Uighars as forced labour in cotton fields. Such a civilised Gov.

summermode · 09/07/2021 08:40

OP you are right “barely any cases or deaths anymore. ” - I have lots of friends and relatives living there. And this nearly zero COVID situation has been for long time (from last year)

the vast majority new cases are from inbound travellers - Who are required strict quarantine upon arrival (14-28days depending on location/circumstances) and numerous testing. All confirmed cases are then transferred to hospital, so no real threat to others.

Recently there were some new cases from someone crossing the border illegally and they built a wall overnight (metal with electricity). It sounds unbelievable but it is true - my friend lives in that province and I saw the photo.

Everything back to normal and the streets look prosperous.

They had very strict lockdown to contain the virus last year and still implement a very organized system to tackle any local outbreak (they call a 2 digit cases "outbreak"). No one I know complained about masks at all and when masks supply was low, they considered it a privilege to have them. People still use masks in some places just to be cautious

Keepemguessing · 09/07/2021 08:44

We haven't heard a peep from China for an entire year because their government has actually managed to control -Covid- the press.

Fixed that for you.

Bythemillpond · 09/07/2021 08:56

Then maybe they can start repaying the debt they owe to the world for not shutting down the country when they were first told there was a problem instead of shutting down the people who were telling them there was a problem.

You can continue thinking so if this makes you feel better. Just like your name “guessing”Wink

Oh yep... definitely, absolutely, totally correct and less than 5000 deaths in the whole country so far.. absolutely amazing. How have they done it?!

I jest. Obviously

You believe that China has a free press? Sweet summer child.

summermode · 09/07/2021 09:09

@Bythemillpond
How fast Boris reacted to the delta variant? There was only small proportion of the new variant just a while ago.

And there were many (potentially) covid cases before the first reported case - even on Mumsnet, many people claimed they probably had it but people did not know what it was.

Whoarethewho · 09/07/2021 09:12

China has handled this well. They enforced the rules and controlled the virus. Unfortunately the mumsnetters who just like to break the rules and demand their rights to visit family abroad and take holidays would hate it there. I admire China and their response and I wish the government had taken the same stance here and we would be back to normal now. Minus foreign travel.

summermode · 09/07/2021 09:15

@Keepemguessing

We were discussing different things. You believe China does not control the covid but control the press to let people think so.
My point is it indeed makes the covid under control and explained to the OP why.

I never deny free press issue, but this is not the point of this thread. The op asked about the real covid situation in China

Comedycook · 09/07/2021 09:16

No one I know complained about masks

If I lived in China, I wouldn't complain about anything...I'd imagine there's a reason people are more compliant and don't complain...it's called fear
