Half vaxxed friends getting Delta

Porridgeislife · 05/07/2021 14:57

Has anyone had a notable uptick in friends getting Delta over the last week? I’ve now got 4 friends infected - one very sick (full week off work), two a bit under the weather and one only found out due to a PCR for foreign travel.

We are all mid to late 30s so half vaxxed with Pfizer or Moderna. One has a fully vaxxed mother & husband who haven't been infected whilst her unvaccinated young children have. All working from home and have been for 15 months.

I’ve been quite relaxed about Covid and just taking the usual masks, hands, space precautions suggested by the government (given my age) plus got vaccinated as soon as allowed. However throughout it all, I’ve never had so many friends sick at once - it seems Delta is much, much more contagious?

@Odisia I assure you my ds had his second vax well over a month ago & he has definitely had it. he said he did both types of test - twice ie 4 tests as he couldn't believe it either & 2 of his friends ditto allin their early thirties
nb When people are ill they are invisible - so unless they are connected to you or someone close to you - you won't know
This is what gets me about people denying covid deaths (not suggesting you have done this -but there is a lot of that attitude about

Odisia · 05/07/2021 20:38

Mumwon I'm sorry about your son. I don't disbelieve anyone. I just am not convinced that a thread like this gives a true representation as it seems so much more negative than positive. I wish anyone well who has covid.

StrongLegs · 05/07/2021 21:37

@HelloMissus I love the idea that covid can be caught by sharing hot water bottles. That would be hilarious if the PM had to ban us from doing that next. And then one of the cabinet would be found out and sacked for doing it.

I don't know anyone with covid yet in this wave, and we are in a hotspot. No school bubbles burst, but I only know of two bubbles bursting in our school at all since covid started.

My whole family had in March last year. DH now double jabbed, I'm single jabbed and waiting to recover from side effects before getting second. DS is relying on immunity from his covid infection last year.

Fingers crossed. Really quite nervous about lifting of restrictions, partly because every other bug will be let loose too. I quite enjoyed not getting flu this year.

LaMariposa · 06/07/2021 00:48

I’ve had Covid last October, and the first vax last month. I was also very ill with Covid but not tested for it in March last year.
Covid is everywhere at work (a school) I’ve had negative LFTs throughout but today I’ve started with the Covid headache/hot eyes/low down sore throat exactly the same as last time. PCR booked for tomorrow and I will be very surprised if it’s negative.
Just hope I’m not too ill.

@MrsSkylerWhite

Yes, it is much more infectious. Which is why everyone should be vaccinated. 92-96% protection after second injection quoted on radio 4 news today.

Ultimately though, hospitalisations and deaths are what count. If they stay very low, the number of infections really don’t matter. That’s sounds a bit flippant: what I mean is, very frail people currently die of ‘flu, seriously immunosupressed people can be in big trouble with a cold.

Our society is going to have to (hate the phrase) learn to live with this. It would be phenomenally worse without the mind-bogglingly effective vaccines.

Thank you, scientists.

Or we could do what our East Asian friends have always done and keep wearing masks on public transit to protect our vulnerable from colds, flus and Covid-19.

It’s such a tiny thing, a small act of empathy, I don’t understand why it bothers Brits so.

This. Afterall we don't smoke in enclosed public spaces. (despite smoking, unlike Covid, being a net gain for the national economy).

Good old-fashioned British common sense can do that. And now it will. That’s also why, from 19 July, there’ll also be no more speed limits on the roads. If you want to do the school run at 90 miles an hour then you can, and if you don’t, then don’t. And if you wipe out the odd pedestrian or two then they were making an informed decision to cross the road, that’s their problem not yours.

changingstages · 06/07/2021 09:51

@ChardonnaysPetDragon

Those of you who know lots of people who have it, do you have young children?
I have a 10 year old. Friend who has it badly has a 6 and 9 year old. Everyone else is childless and, I assume, socialising more, which is how I imagine they've caught it.
Mandalay246 · 06/07/2021 10:14

The double vaxxed colleague was very unwell so although that was a bit scary I guess it's good in a way as presumably he would have been even more unwell without the vaccination.

This mentality strikes me as brainwashed.

Sorry - whoever posted it. I"m not attacking you. I've read it so many times and it seems such a nonsense. It's a way of pacifying ourselves.

I disagree. I had the 'flu a few years ago after being vaccinated (yes, it was 'flu, not a cold) and I was fully recovered in three days. On the rare occasions I've had 'flu in the past I've been ill for over a week. That's generally what happens when you are vaccinated, you might still become ill, but it is less severe. It's not "brainwashed" at all.

Gwenhwyfar · 06/07/2021 12:37

" (yes, it was 'flu, not a cold) "

How do you know? (You can get body aches and other flu symptoms with a cold and you can also get flu that is not so serious).

Gwenhwyfar · 06/07/2021 12:38

"Or we could do what our East Asian friends have always done and keep wearing masks on public transit to protect our vulnerable from colds, flus (...)"

No way. We've lived with colds and flus so far and we can continue to do so.

jajabanks · 06/07/2021 12:57

I've had both jabs and still caught the delta, shared from my ds, we both had the same symptoms and felt the same, two others in the house caught it with different symptoms and one not caught it at all.

user1473450164 · 06/07/2021 17:27

It's is more contagious and the vaccine won't stop you from catching it. Reduces your chances of catching it but does not eliminate them.

I work in a busy London emergency department. Hardly any patients are been admitted with Covid now, those that are, are firstly not going to critical care.. a statistic you may have noticed was left out of the press briefing yesterday. Now we only talk of admissions not critical care. These admission are staying in hospital wards for a relatively short time. Secondly every admission I have seen has been in unvaccinated people.

Middersweekly · 06/07/2021 17:30

DB and SIL both tested positive for Covid yesterday. Both clinic done PCR and rapid home test kits. I’m assuming it is Delta variant as that is the main variant floating about at the moment. SIL has cough and fever, DB has dizziness, headache and feeling under the weather generally. They’ve both had one vaccine (Pfizer).

Souther · 06/07/2021 17:35

Just anecdata but my sisters husband got it covid before the delta strain earlier in the year.
They all avoided him but every one I the house was self isolating. No one else got it.

A couple of weeks ago her son got Covid. He's 19.
And again he isolated from everyone.
My sister who was double vaccinated got it. Her daughter got and her toddler also got it. So seems much more transmisible

Dustyboots · 06/07/2021 17:38

If they are unvaccinated why do you think they're not going to critical care @user1473450164?

PicsInRed · 06/07/2021 17:40
It could also turn us all into cake bananas but, you know, that's nothing but wild speculation. Anything's possible in theory though, right? 🤔

I have a headline:

"Cake banana frenzy as scientists warn anything possible"

ZednotZee · 06/07/2021 17:42

My colleague has it. Double vaxxed.

I'm hoping the vaccine is effective because she is in her fifties, morbidly obese with obstructive sleep apnea.

Thank you for this x
SpnBaby1967 · 06/07/2021 17:46

The last person I know who caught covid was me at Christmas.

Vrnyoop · 06/07/2021 17:48

Yes know two double vaxxed people caught delta from their not-yet-vaxxed student daughter.

They have been off work sick but not so ill to need hospitalisation.

GumtreeGirl · 06/07/2021 17:57

I’m mid 40s, tested positive on the day I should have had my second jab (AZ). I had two days off work but really should have taken longer - my symptoms were mostly feeling utterly wiped out, along with headaches, loss of smell and a heavy cold. The latter are gone, I’m left feeling very tired after 12 days with a tickly cough. My sense of smell is gradually returning.
Mild symptoms, really, apart from the fatigue, which has been horrible. I’m relieved I had one dose as it could have been much worse without; worrying that there are apparently quite a few double-jabbed people with serious symptoms.
I’m amazed that the govt is going ahead with opening up, given the circs.

Empressofthemundane · 06/07/2021 18:00

I know two 16 year olds who caught it. One had no symptoms at all. The other had a fever and felt lousy for a week.

user1473450164 · 06/07/2021 18:02

Because most of them are young. Also even though many patients ended up in critical care pre vaccine, the majority of patients admitted then were to wards.
EarlGreywithLemon · 06/07/2021 18:04

Yes, a double vaccinated colleague has it. He’s a week in, and now feeling better. A friend (double vaccinated) just had a positive lateral flow test, but doesn’t have any symptoms right now. And my husband’s colleague has it too (single vaccinated). She’s been poorly and off work for a week, but seems to be getting better.
That’s the most I’ve known in one go since December, when several families we know caught it via their kids from nurseries.

Idontcareboutthestateofmyhair · 06/07/2021 18:07

Yeah, I know lots more people who have it this time, some double jabbed and quite ill. I'm only single jabbed and nearly 50 so I'll still be being very careful. This shit about not wearing masks is bullshit.
