Women are just imagining problem periods after the vaccine

It's a blog post by a doctor on the Zoe COVID study. She's basically saying that all women who've experienced changes and issues are imagining it. Or rather, it's real but it's not down to the vaccine

What do you think on reading it? I KNOW the vaccine delayed my period and then, when it came, it was really heavy. I know this wasn't down to a painkiller I may have taken or a spot of stress I had Hmm

I had a surprise period end of January, very heavy lasted 3 weeks, had my jab Jan 10th. Before that I hadn't had a period since the previous march (am 54)

TiddleTaddleTat · 06/07/2021 16:02

Haven't RTFT but I agree. Found that article on the Zoe site really dismissive about this actually!

reesewithoutaspoon · 06/07/2021 16:11

Unless women actually report period irregularities via the yellow card scheme. then no one will know about the prevalence. I know i didn't go to my GP at the time as I just assumed it was a random period as I am menopausal. But I havent had one since and it was extremely heavy with excessive flooding
Please take 5 minutes to report if you had disordered menstruation. Otherwise they will never know.

I think it needs studying in a proper controlled way, not minimising, failing to examine or relying on anecdote.

It wouldn't surprise me if there was a link given the number of reports but the effect needs separating out from the background level of menstrual irregularities that can occur.

My first period after my first dose Pfizer was totally normal, will see what it's like after the second. Will join that Imperial study if they still need participants.

BoredtoTiers · 06/07/2021 18:18

Mine was nearly 2 weeks late, much heavier than normal and iirc lasted about 10 days. I'm normally regular as clockwork & not on any hormonal contraception.

Happened to mention it the GP next time I saw her (she asked a question that made this relevant) and it was suggested it could be down to me 'expecting side effects' (I was vaccinated fairly early so didn't know this could be a side effect) or 'my age' (not yet 40 and hell of a coincidence for it to be a sudden onset of peri-menopause symptoms).

Regardless of whether the vaccines cause it, the dismissal of anything that could be classed as 'women's issues' is very much real.

MouldyPotato · 07/07/2021 09:13

I'm scared to get my second jab after the horrendous period I had after the first one. I would feel so much better if they could say "look this happens to some women, we're looking into it, but it resolves after a month"

Powerof4 · 07/07/2021 09:17

Surprise, surprise, medical profession dismisses women’s experience and concerns… so disappointing this happens.

Lonelydaisy · 07/07/2021 14:16

I had my first vaccine in March and have only had 2 periods since. I'm now 3 weeks late again. First period after the vaccine was about 6 weeks late

isthismylifenow · 07/07/2021 14:25

I only know about this issue from MN, as I am not in the UK and up until last week had only vaccinated over 60's so something like this would not have been flagged up due to womens age. But I had my vaccine on Friday, and guess what... boom yesterday I started the most ridiculous period which is 2 weeks early. And I am usually so regular that I can almost set a timer on my watch as to when I will start. No warning signs of cramps or sensitive boobs, nothing.

I had the first Pfizer so I have yet to have the next one, so I will just be ever prepared then as well.

Philosophical16 · 08/07/2021 09:12

I feel the medical profession are still dismissive of women’s issues. I had my jab in march, my periods have always been like clockwork. I didnt have another period for 3 months. Perhaps i wouldnt have minded so much but i was meant to be starting ivf. In fact i had been in for the initial scan and she said lining looks good, you should start your period imminently. So after 2 months went to the gynaecologist who said she couldnt see any issues re hormones etc and no idea why it hadnt started.
In any case GP had been dismissive saying it happens but i feel its like ‘unexplained infertility’, they don’t know everything. They should at least take these findings on board from women who report them.

steppemum · 08/07/2021 09:16

mirena coil, and I'm 54.

periods pretty much non existant, occasional spotting.

1st vaccine fine
2nd vaccine, 48 hours later proper full period, which lasted several days.
one month later, another period.

FrangipaniBlue · 08/07/2021 09:42

My understanding was that it's not the ingredients in the vaccine that affects periods per se, it's more the stress on your body of the immuno response?

This could happen with any vaccine or serious illness.

The difficulty is that vaccines are given in childhood and the majority of us have no reason to be given vaccines in adulthood so we simply don't know if this would happen after having other vaccines (ie because it's the immuno response) or if it genuinely is specific to the Covid vaccine.

Philosophical16 · 08/07/2021 10:24

I have had vaccines since childhood for various travel destinations such as hep A, yellow fever, typhoid and several others but not had an impact to my periods before. Plus the flu vaccine hasnt caused issues previously.

It could be coincidental however i feel since women are seeing these issues there should be studies done and it shouldn't be overlooked as just women's problems.

The latest info I've seen is that "the immune system affects sex hormones" from this article. Sex hormones affect fertility, but some doctors say the vaccines have no impact on fertility.

Since starting my periods, I've had the BCG jab plus others to go travelling in my early 20s. No impact on my menstrual cycle. The only thing I can compare it to is the impact of hormonal contraception.

Villanelle17 · 08/07/2021 10:47

Sigh. It's nearly always women's issues that are ignored/played down.

Arsebucket · 08/07/2021 10:49

Can you imagine if there was an issue that only affected men? If men were complaining of, i don’t know, erectile dysfunction? I doubt it would be brushed under the carpet.

ForeverAintEnough3 · 08/07/2021 10:54

@BringBackThinEyebrows my sex hormones have always been perfect levels but I am infertile. Your sex hormones don’t determine your fertility in and of itself so I guess that’s what the doctor meant.

It’s unhelpful to dismiss those with period differences as clearly it is a common side effect of the vaccine. Everyone needs to make sure they report it so it’s a listed side effect.

Just to reassure anyone reading this and worried about the vaccine though it doesn’t happen to everyone. I track my cycle and it has been completely normal and I’ve now had both jabs. So ovulating and period arriving when expected and normal bleed.

@Arsebucket apparently more research papers have been published on erectile dysfunction than every single women’s gynaecological issue so you’re are 100% right!

Arsebucket · 08/07/2021 10:58

@ForeverAintEnough3 because men and their all powerful penises are all that matter.

Stuffin · 09/07/2021 08:10

I have just reported mine using the yellow card.
