COVID app

I’ve never had the app on my phone. There seemed to be so many Issues with it when it first came out, I didn’t want it. I’m also self employed and would struggle to afford to take a week + off because I was pinged by mistake (I’ve heard of it pinging because neighbours tested positive for example).

I’ve been to a pub for a quick drink tonight and been told off by the bar staff for not having the app. I’m quite happy for them to record my attendance and gave the correct Name and phone number. It’s very rare for me to in to a pub or restaurant, maybe the third time since they reopened. My biggest COVID risk is through the dc at school.

Can I get the app, but delete or reliably turn off the Bluetooth detectable bit to ensure I won’t get ‘pinged’ through that, but still have the scanning bit turned on so on the odd occasion I go out, I don’t get a telling off and can scan in and out myself?

I mean that's the whole point of the app....

fedup078 · 29/06/2021 21:36

Yes you can do that
I was one of those people who got pinged through a wall so I have turned off the tracker but I can still scan in when asked to

I presume the bar staff were only complaining as it was extra work for them. You can either download and delete the app each time you go out or turn off contact tracing.

We went to a pub to watch the football tonight and there was no problem giving details when we got there. I gave my name and number and DH gave his name and said to use my number. I was expecting to be told I should have the app but they were fine.

I just pretend to scan it, just point my phone at it. Never had the app

Yes you can use the app for venue check in and turn off the contact tracing part of it.

I just take a photo of the QR code

lljkk · 29/06/2021 21:43

Pretend to use it

It won't let me do that. If it has the contact tracing thing turned off it has a hissy fit and refuses to work (so I just take nice photos of the qr code instead)

How annoying. I think mine gave me a dire warning when I switched it off but I just kept acknowledging that I definitely wanted to turn it off and it let me, and I've left it off ever since.

The Bluetooth flattens my (shit) battery. So I turn it on to check into places but it's off most of the time
